- The White Desert in Egypt is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The landscape looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book with strange rocks sticking out at odd angles from the golden sand. The rocks themselves are soft and have been shaped over millions of years by wind erosion and sandstorms. One unique thing we learned about the White Desert is that it was actually under water about 80 million years ago. In fact, you can sometimes find seashells as well as microscopic sea creatures in the white rocks. Now, we’ll show you all of the amazing spots we explored throughout our White Desert trip and what to expect for your own White Desert adventure.
Day 1
The most common starting point for a White Desert trip is from Cairo. A personal car was arranged for us and took us from Cairo to Bahariya, where we met our guide Waheed. It takes about 5 hours to get to Bahariya. Once there, you will hop in the 4x4 and head to the first destination, which is a short stop at the Black Desert. This desert has a unique landscape with hundreds of small black volcano-shaped mountains. After the black desert, you will make your way to Crystal Mountain, where you can find thousands of small crystal rocks scattered across the sand. On your way to the campsite for the night, you will scale some massive sand dunes. We came across one of our favorite spots on the trip near the camp… a huge white rock where we could watch the sunset, sit in the soft sand, and discover for ourselves how ancient the White Desert really was. For the final activity of the first day, it’s time to set up camp and get the fire going. The White Desert can get extremely cold at night, so it’s important to wear warm clothes and build a fire before the sun goes down.
Day 2
Day 2 is where you really get to see some interesting rock formations, which the White Desert is famous for. After a peaceful morning coffee and breakfast, it’s off again in the 4x4. The first stop is “the Arch”. Take some time to bask in the beauty of this natural rock archway that formed over millions of years. Near the arch, you will find some massive sand dunes, which are perfect for drifting in the car as well as sandboarding. We were lucky and had the entire dunes to ourselves. The magic spring is another one-of-a-kind destination along the route on day 2. This spring fills up from the top of the small hill and flows down into the pools below, forming an oasis in the middle of the desert. On your way to the white desert national park camp, you’ll find endless white waves that look like they’ve been frozen in time. This unique shape was caused mainly by wind erosion over time and makes you feel like you’re playing in the ocean for a moment. For the last stop of the day, you’ll arrive into the camp, where you can enjoy another magical sunset. If you’re lucky you’ll also get to experience the real Bedouin culture through a musical evening with drums and singing.
Day 3
The first thing to do on day 3 is see the famous Mushroom and Chicken Rock. Another highlight on your way out of the national park is to take a ride through the valley of the tents. After a few spins around the rocks, it’s time to head to Bahariya, which is about 1 and a half hours away in the 4x4. Then, it’s another 5 hour drive back to Cairo by car.

We were blessed to have a three day excursion in August 2023. It was an one of a kind experience; a true travel oasis in the over touristy Egypt! Having visited a lot of deserts during our trips, our experience with Waheed was over the top! Highly recommended, it was worth every single minute!

We found Waheed through this youtube channel and we're really grateful to have him as our guide. We went to Egypt for its history but in the end, the desert was unanimously the highlight of the trip for all 3 of us! It is that amazing! And having Waheed made it really fun and enjoyable. He truly cares for its environment.
It was unfortunate that we only had enough time for 1 night in the desert only. Had we known how amazing the desert sights and experience would have been, we would have extended for a longer tour to go deeper into the desert!

We also went with Waheed on a similar trip through the white desert and I cant recommend it enough. Not only is the white desert a magical place, Waheed made our stay a special one. He arranged a full itinerary, transport, fun activities, delicious food, campfire music and great company. Definitely hit him up when you are in Egypt!

@@muratsuyur We paid about 450 euro for a 3day2night trip with everything included (meals, transport, cairo pickup, sleep, guide, etc). Definitely worth the money if you ask me. Contact Waheed and he will provide you with a custom itinerary and the costs.
My wife and I just did the 3 day/2 night desert trip with Waheed and his son. The tour is amazing and Waheed is the perfect guide/host. His passion and knowledge of the area is out of this world and everything is taken care of. I would highly recommend to anyone to go to Egypt and do this tour.

What a desert is that, so varied, so beautiful, that unique silence... Waheed makes the desert even more special, without him the trip would not be the same, a fantastic person, with a huge smile and humour, we had a lot of fun in the long nights of conversation by the campfire. How lucky we are!? Many of us had the opportunity to meet this incredible human being, Waheed, thanks to your video! We were there in January! It was pretty cold at night. It’s better to visit in the spring or autumn 😌
yeah, while you are driving through the desert it is constantly shaking, it’s not like to go along the road😄😄😄

The first night we slept in a seperate tent which Waheed brought. The second night we slept in the same tent (the cooking tent) as it was warmer!

Awesome! You’ll have a great time with Waheed. He’s the best 👍👍 don’t remember the exact price we paid, but the value we got was definitely worth the price. Plus, all meals, water, camping gear, sandboard, etc was included

It was when we visited! It’s only possible as a guided tour and they make sure you’re safe 😊
Hey, 5 of us Americans plan to take a tour here in December. But is it true as Americans like you, that's it's not legal unless we get permission from the police or an escort?
Our guide Waheed arranged a taxi and all the documentation to get to the White Desert. It's for all foreign tourists... there are police checkpoints everywhere and your (taxi) driver needs to have you registered in order to pass them. All tour companies know about it so they always have all the papers arranged.

We intentionally never include prices because it’s changing all the time. Especially in Egypt the currency has devalued drastically over the last year (we were there Jan 2022) so prices we paid aren’t relevant anymore
