In the cup final against Preston, Howard Kendall became the youngest player at 17 years and 345 days to appear in an FA Cup final. If United had beaten WHU in this game George Best would have also been the youngest player at 17 years and 345 days both being born May 22nd 1946.
Funnily enough, my old man (86 now) was in that same open end exactly 12 months before in the 63 semi-final. He too got absolutely drenched at the game. Fans with blue/red hats had dyed streaks down their faces. Leicester beat Liverpool on that occasion, but lost at Wembley to Man Utd. At least the Hammers stopped United from a possible 2nd Cup win on the spin!
A decade later and I was in the same end...against Derby and Leeds I think it was...there were a few big open ends on the day...alright to the rains came...and looking at the pitch there had been plenty of recent rains...
I believe Bobby Moore was majestic in this game, George Best was still moaning about the Hillsborough pitch in his Autobiography 4 years later, and seeing this I don't blame him. Hardly the surface for dribblers and passers.
i heard geoff hurst talk about this game, he said everything went according to plan on the day and that it was probably one of west ham's best performances ever.
@@bertcert991 on a decent pitch west ham would have given manchester utd a drubbing. that pitch is not the type of pitch west ham like to play football on. its the type of pitch i have seen west ham get beat loads of times. no way west ham aka southern softees could beat any northern side on that surface,
@@trinihammerthe week before United beat the happy hammers 2-0 at Upton Park with a weakened team no way could mr overrated Moore and co outplay that side on a decent pitch

Pitches were great back then weren't they? And so too were the fans and of course the players were British and got paid a reasonable wage and looked decent men. Oh and the ref was smartly dressed in black.
As were the Bobbies on the side...keeping the fans apart...even talking to them...hello hello hello...Dixon of Dock Green...sounded like a West Haam fan
@Genialharrygrout. How correct you are, watched a game in 1977 at my local team the mud was 6"deep , last year on the same ground there was a puddle in the corner an inch deep and four feet round and the game was postponed!

Strange coincidence...?
yeah and 16 years later west ham's PAUL ALLEN became the youngest player in a fa cup final against arsenal 1980 cup final won by west ham

2 players with great balance...but at opposite ends of the pitch...Moore and Best...both greats for me!
When the people at the bottom could afford to go to the match.
I totally agree
The only people who went to the games in those days
When there were real fans, real bovril, real prices...and real mud
Geoff Hurst has no idea what awaits him in 2 years. 1966! The year West Ham won the World Cup.⚒️
nobody on the pitch knew what awaited them
none of the west ham players knew what awaited them a year later when they won the EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS CUP

Best match I have been to following the Hammers.
Spot the blade of grass !
Nope...and beeeeenn looking a looong time...keep thinking the sun might break out and a spark a shoot or two...before the end of the game...

Blokes who'd been on The Somme would describe that pitch as "a bit muddy"
No issues with the team that lost, no saying the manager should be sacked, just accepted it and moved on
