WOW - - - Allen - I really like the way you think. -- -- The Philippines is the 'only' other country I have ended up with apart from Cambodia ! --- As an old US citizen I also agree with Ecuador - but only CUENCA where a lot of English is used' ? > The language barrier for me is the deal breaker - because - most locals speak no English. I'm simply too old to be challenged by the language daily ! -- Being retired - I want to be - "comfortable" - not stressed ? - - - Another great job illustrating the reality for the 'ignorant' back here in the States !!! --- I must tell you there are areas in the Philippines where 70% below the US national average cost of living can be had - just like in Siem Reap. > There are over 100 million - far more than the Khmer population. (?) Crime as a result would naturally be more. The similarity of the friendly cultures is amazing in my view. There are many retired US military - a VA clinic in Manila and many retired expats loving the various islands and lifestyles !!! - - - I may go there 1st instead of Siem Reap - due to the many expats from the States already retired there for years - and able to assist in acclimating. The '''one''' - serious - negative for me with S R is the extreme heat & humidity. -- Whereas very comfortable weather can be had an hour S of Manila @ 2000 ft above sea level ! Cool breezes fresh air and little AC needed. (WOW) Fresh produce also & pineapple bananas coconuts coffee strawberries.....all year too ! Beautiful scenic terrain waterfalls lakes...... all near > Tagaytay. + Beaches are only an hour away & much hotter @ sea level !
Thanks!
CRIME in Ecuador sucks now ! Even in the ex-pat areas !
Excellent video Allen. I'm struggling with this very question of where to settle once I finish my contract in Myanmar. I want to retire and Cambodia is on my list and the Phillipines. Cuenqua Equador I have heard of being on the retired expat scene and I'm interested as I speak Spanish. So I'm looking forward to a video on there made by you.
I lived in Cebu City for 6 weeks. I hated it. All the peasant attitude felt forced and the food absolutely sucked. I couldn't get back to Thailand quick enough. Unfortunately I landed in Pattaya which also sucked. I should have gone back to Chiang Mai. Instead I am coming to Siem Reap in October. It looks like what I imagine CM might have looked like 25 years ago.
Ecuador unfortunately has spiralled into drug fuelled gang chaos since this video was made.
What about Indonesia or Laos
Surprised you didn’t have Thailand as one of your choices, obviously easier if your over 50, then the retirement visa is very easy once your there. Albania is worth checking out, it’s way cheaper than any other Mediterranean country, there’s a yearly visa for Americans! Sri Lanka is becoming popular again, as the situation there has improved! Not sure Mauritius would be a good choice, it’s expensive to travel there and you have to be over 50 for the retirement visa with other requirements. You would have to visit for awhile to see if it’s suitable
I was thinking Albania or Montenegro.
North Finnland,Norway!
You’re not a nonce at all
Thanks again Allan for the succinct and on point coverage. As I am getting ready to retire and want to do it as an expat, I will do a deeper dive into Mauritius. i had not considered it.
