- The As Old as the Hills exhibition (2024) explored the profound connection between art, heritage and the environment through a series of stunning works exhibited at the extraordinary Bauhaus building ('Zig Zag'), Glastonbury, Somerset, UK. Volunteers played a crucial role, contributing to various aspects such as setup, stewarding, and visitor engagement.
Whether they were passionate about art, deeply committed to environmental causes, or simply eager to be part of something meaningful, there was a role for everyone to make a difference.
In this video, created by Andy Ralston (Spark a Change), curators Fiona Campbell and Jan Ollis share their insights into the exhibition and the importance of volunteers on the project. You’ll also hear from two of the volunteers who helped behind the scenes, sharing their experiences and the impact the project had on them.

Fiona Campbell is a freelance visual artist/educator/curator. She creates sculptural installations and mixed media artworks. At the root of her practice is the notion of interconnectedness throughout nature, energy, life’s cyclical persistence, and transformation. Increasingly, environmental concerns about human exploitation of nature and over-consumption inform the content, as artivism. Fiona's use of recycled and found materials relates to our relationship with matter, nature and ourselves - material as message. The labour-intensive process is key.
Fiona works with community, teaches art and curates community art projects and exhibitions in interesting spaces. These involve collaboration and public engagement programmes for diverse audiences. Her curated projects include: As Old as the Hills; The Gleaning; B-Wing, (Shepton Mallet Prison, ’19, and step in stone, (artscapes in quarries linking culture, environment, community).
