This Man was such a Literary Treasure. R.I.P. Herman Wouk! I've seen both "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" on Television when they first aired. I can watch both Television Mini-Series over and over and over again!!!!! ❤
A tremendous giant of literature in any and all ages. Many have asked, "Who will write the great American novel?" Well, it was Herman Wouk in "Winds..." and "...Remembrance". He also wrote a two-volume history of Zionism called "The Hope" and "The Glory" which I have but confess I've been delaying reading. shame on me. Also a novel "Marjory Morningstar" which I do not have here.
I read it the first time in '74 as well. I was a junior in high school. I've read it again over the years and seen the movie, having had more life experience and understanding who the true villain was. I hope I can live as long as he did, and have the same level of mental clarity.
I read WoW and WaR when I was in high school myself. I’ve reread it once since and meant to do it a 3rd time during the pandemic but events took over. It’s definitely a saga I’ll revisit at different points in my life.
The Caine Mutiny was an amazing read. We watch Willie Keith grow up on the Caine. His struggles as a Midshipman. The origins of his relationship with May Wynn. The silliness of attempting to find his ship when he arrives in Pearl. Then finally surrendering to the Navy's bureaucracy. The lazy days in Pearl Harbor while waiting for his ship and entertaining the Admiral at cocktail party's and hanging out with Tom's Keefers brother Roland. The letter from his father, who seemed almost a stranger to him, as his mother was the dominant force in his life. All this before he ever set foot on the USS Caine. Even better was Willie's dealing with Capt. De Vries before the change of command and Capt Queegs first few months on board. Absolutely hilarious stuff. Not to mention the original XO, Lt. Gorton's dealings with Queeg. The novel version of Capt. Queeg is remarkably like a someone who dominates our daily news. I'm glad Herman Wouk lived long enough to witness it. Oh where is our Barney Greenwald?
Both "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" are more than novels, their history alive at the moment it happened. You get an visceral feel for the times as they were, understand the people of the day, and both rejoice and cringe at the soul of humanity.
This man killed my soul when I saw War and Remembrance......I recommend watching it.....you won't ever ever be the same...it shows how EVIL the Nazis were.
Everyone is mentioning The Winds of War , and War and Remembrance which are both great books, but not his only great books, by far. I highly recommend his novels Youngblood Hawke, Marjorie Morningstar, and, if you need a good laugh, The City Boy. I've loved these books since I first read them years ago, and often share The City Boy with friends who need cheering up.
Herman Wouk was a great man and writer. But this CBS interview was dishonest. It managed to avoid mentioning the key fact in his writing: that his worldview was that of an Orthodox Jew. He makes that quite clear in his greatest works: war and remembrance, this is my God , inside outside , and even his early important works: Marjorie Morningstar and Caine mutiny
@@dongately2817 - actually, one would need more than a passing familiarity with a coue of wouk novels to understand the depth and sophistication of his faith. A start is his first non fiction book on Judaism, This Is My God.
I watched 'Winds of War' when I was 13 and immediately read both Winds of War and 'War and Remembrance'. I wish that her interview had been more in depth. I felt it was condescending and patronizing, due to his age. Watch her body language and facial expressions. She failed to realize that Hermann Wolke WAS Aaron Jastrow.
RIP Sir. I enjoyed your Winds of War/War and Rememberance books. Thank you for that epic work.

He was a great writer! I absolutely enjoyed Winds of War and War and Remembrance.
And also Youngblood Hawke. What a book that was!
Rest In Peace, Herman Wouk (May 27, 1915 - May 17, 2019)

I read The Caine Mutiny back in 1974...great book and great movie.
The clarity of mind this guy had right up to his death...wow.

Amazing how sharp and lucid he stayed unto the end of his life.

Saw "war and remembrance".... It ripped my guts out. So clearly expressed, vividly done.
Amazing writer.

watching "War and Rememberance" again......
What a Great Writer who made History to come Alive and Relevant
How nice to see these authorial interviews; much to be gleaned
Thank you.
The interviewer was nervous, I would be too.
RIP Mr. Wouk.
A worthy addition to Hemingway in the Pantheon of great American authors
Reading Winds of War because Caine Mutiny (finished a few weeks ago) is my new favorite book. I ADORED that book.
Such a shame, he would've being 104 on the 27th. RIP Herman
Omg. He lived so long and so well but got out of town just before the isolation of Covid at a very ripe old age having written a giant legacy.
One of my all-time favorite authors. Hard to believe he was over 100 years old here.
I didn't know Herman Wouk passed on! BARUCH DAYAN EMES!😪
This was a great man!
RIP Herman Wouk, I was planning in reading his noval Cain Mutiny before he died but failed
It's a great novel

My favorite Author. What a great writer.
Rest In Eternal Peace Mr Wouk. Winds of War & War and Rememberence are Epic WWII historical Novels. Thanx for all your stories.
A man is as great as the woman behind him.

It’s a Sunday morning fluff piece. Anyone who has any familiarity with Wouk knows the depth of his faith, plus the yarmulke is a bit of a giveaway.

Yes, and IMO his books subtly reveal his latent contempt for Christianity and Islam
@@NS-vw8pm - hardly. his central heroic character, admiral pug henry pug henry, is a portrayed serious christian. it is central to his makeup.
What an extraordinary man Mr. Wouk was. And what a long and productive life he had.
my favorite author of all time; read everything he has written.
Amazing writer. Rest in peace with Sarah now.
Thanks Herman. Your City Boy inspired me to read WoW and WaR. I was rewarded with the 2 tv miniseries.
My favorite two books. I've read them both many times.
A fulfilled life.....good for you sir!... RIP...
Awesome !!
Once you discover his books, you have to run out and buy them all.
“Go Wouk and go broke!”

Wouldn’t it be incredible if you found a woman in life that would support you and all your endeavors
Wouk’s theme was always the issue of ethics in individuals during times of stress.
RIP
Wow.
I don't think Herman really cared for Tracy, the interviewer. He seemed put off by her a bit. Not quite as tough an interview as Jerry Lewis, though.
Wow 102
😎
RIP Herman Wouk. A Woke man surrounded by a planet filled with too many "Yellowstains"
RIP Herman Wouk
