I attended a formal wedding few years ago and I rented a dress from rent the runway. I didn’t have anything that was remotely formal, so this was a great way to look great for the wedding without having to buy a dress I was going to wear once!
I did this in NYC for 2 years with my work wardrobe. It was great because I lived near a brick and mortar rental store so I didn't have the waste of shipping- or the wait. I always looked fabulous and I think it helped my career dressing so nice. Now I barely have any clothes of my own but it doesn't matter since we're home all the time now :/
That would be so great to have one nearby!
@@MyGreenCloset it really was. Unfortunately I saw the brick and mortar shop closed due to covid. Hopefully it will come back.
Did your co workers know where you got your clothing?
@@jow.2450 Nope!
I always have one dress that I wear for every formal event for years. men* are able to wear the same suit over and over again, so why shouldn't I be able to do the same?
For sure! That's awesome!
Another place to rent event clothes are theatre costume stores. I work at one (when there's no pandemic) and we've had people rent outfits for weddings, parties and all sort of events. This could also be a great option if you're going to a themed event.
Interesting.
This was so interesting and answered questions I didn't know I had. I've never rented clothing but have wanted to try it for the purpose of getting to wear a designer item without having to pay full price. BUT it hadn't crossed my mind to consider full retail price in case the item does get severely damaged. It's totally fair of the rental companies to have this condition but if I do ever rent clothing, I'll definitely keep that in mind!
Also something that I didn't mention but some companies that rent luxury brands have an option to also buy insurance for damages so that could be a way to still rent those expensive pieces but protect yourself just in case something happens.
@@MyGreenCloset Interesting! So much to know and learn about clothing rentals! Thanks for the info.
I’ve used Nuuly! I love it and it makes it so I don’t have to stuff giant winter coats into my tiny NYC apartment. Instead, I rent jackets in the winter and return them in the spring to save in space.
Whoa. You're brilliant.
I can absolutely see doing this for a special event, but probably not for a regular thing.
I loved having a clothing subscription for 3 years from Gwynnie Bee. All high end and excellent quality, a few were even sustainable brands. Everything from dresses to jeans. You get to know your style and sizes better in expensive clothes, so you don't waste money if you do buy. Erin, those dresses are gorgeous and you looked stunning in them all!!! 😍💥💯
Thanks for sharing your experience, they seem like a good rental company and I love that they offer extended sizing! And thanks 😊 they were so fun to wear!
I kind of view thrift stores as my clothing rentals. I buy something inexpensively, try it out, keep it if I end up loving it and donate it back if I don't.
I have rented my prom dress in Croatia, it was from local place, where you can try it and they mend it to you and comes on hanger in reusable garment bag. Many of my friends did the same. When it came to wedding dress in Croatia we have big chain Sposa with designer dresses not much else is available beside very few local shops here n there with dresses to rent. So as much the chain wanted me to rent their dress I managed to buy a beautiful handmade dress in Denmark on a fair, which also came on hanger in reusable garment bag. I have one black dress with a white rose A line ball gown designer dress which I got for my PhD defense, but since I wore it to conferences and Ivy League university class speeches, always wore it, got compliments and gave me confidence while being alone on the stage. There is smth about those dresses and special occasions that should make us get them out of closet for some extra moments of confidence boost when we need it even if we take them to city center or park walk to make pictures.
Really interesting video! One thing that struck me is the idea that it’s most sustainable to be at home to accept your delivery to avoid repeating the “last mile.” It makes perfect sense but there’s also (as I’m sure you know) a lot of privilege in being able to be at home at any time to receive a delivery.
Definitely!
But if you're not home you can also sometimes do things like have it held at a post office to pick up, some services also let you change delivery days, or request where you'd like it delivered to try and reduce the delivery attempts.
Wow! What an interesting and well researched video. I would definitely consider renting for an event instead of buying. Not too many events in my short term future(thanks COVID) but you provided many useful tips to ensure a good fit. By the way, you looked gorgeous in all the dresses you picked! So cute to see you twirling around! Warmest regards from Montreal 💚💚💚
That’s wild I was just looking into clothing rental services and then you posted this video! RAD 🤙
Thank you Verena once again an excellent video! I am a long-time member of Vaatelainaamo Vaaterekki, a clothing rental company here in Helsinki, Finland that specializes exclusively on sustainable, ethical and local brands. My membership started with the need to source clothing for a certain event. Nowadays I mostly use the membership to cheer up my everyday wardrobe. Being now almost 9 months pregnant, I've found it particularly useful in finding clothes that fit my changing body and carry me through this period without a ton of extra short-term purchases. Another considerable benefit has been being introduced to new brands, styles, colours and shapes knowing that everything I try on is produced sustainably. That really takes off a lot of the stress of finding clothes that match my values! The membership at Vaaterekki has really impacted my sense of style and also helped me find new beloved staples to my permanent wardrobe. :)
That's wonderful!
That was such a cool graphic when you’re talking about sustainability of clothing rentals! Very impressed. Great job!
This was very informative one.Thank you so much for the video
I love your deep dive videos! They are incredibly thoughtful and thorough
Thank you! 😊
I can see how they would have a place for certain occasions.
I looooved this video!! 😍😍😍😍 so many helpful tips! The looks!! Everything!! I wish I could give it more than 1 like
I'm so glad! 😊
oooh the red dress is so pretty, and the pictures turned out amazing!
Thanks!!
Hello! I have a work to do for school and this information will be definitly usefull! Thank you!!! The homework is about LXRandCo Luxury Designer Handbags. In Canada, it is kind of a new concept to rent a bag or clothes.
Great informative video! Would you please make a video about children’s clothing rental? Xx
For fancy events this is the way to go!!!
Interesting information, thanks. You didn't mention size inclusivity which I have read is an issue with rental companies. Also fitting: I have a full bust and a short waist, even though I fit into "regular" sizes. So I would be hesitant to receive only one size of an item and even then if the proportions are off it might not fit well. I really liked the first tiered dress you chose and I laughed because the style is very similar to a dress I made for myself last summer. That relaxed style is forgiving but again the proportions could easily be an issue. I'd consider a rental for an event if I could try it on first.
If you check out the linked post it lists some rental services and their size ranges - there are some good options offering extended sizing. :)
That's so cool you made a similar dress! It's a beautiful style!
@@MyGreenCloset Thanks, that's helpful to have as a reference.
This video deserves alot more views 🙏🏿🙏🏿
I find renting for special events interesting, but wouldn't rent every day clothes. For one, I'm really picky with washing detergent and the smell of clothing that doesn't belong to me often bothers me. Also I really easily damage or stain my clothes and I don't like hand washing. So the stress of taking extra care for clothes, that don't belong to me, would stress me out too much.
I much prefer second hand shoping.
you're right on time with this video, i was just starting to think about renting some clothes 😂 I've been thinking about getting dungarees for years now, but never wanted to spend 100€+ on sustainably made ones, maybe I could try to rent them!
I find it really helpful to test out styles!
great info
I'd like to get your opinion on Prana as a sustainable clothing brand - their pants tend to be some of my favorites, but I'm trying to decide if they're worth the price for actual sustainability. Thanks!
I have always been curious about renting clothing because I'm trying to find my style and I don't want to keep buying clothes' I don't like. Plus, it will add variety of clothing without taking up space in my wardrobe.
I treat thrifting, especially for jewelry, like a rental. I pay some small to medium amount and get to play with it, and if it is not a match for my style as far as I thought, I will happily re-donate it back.
I know this video is two years old, but I have to comment that the trench looks amazing on you
Wow!
If you really fell in love with a garment, is there the option to purchase it from the rental store?
Some let you, some don't, it depends on the company.
I wonder...If you really like a piece of clothe you rented, can you buy it ?
Some companies will let you, it really depends though.
👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Glad to see your hair grew back. Please don't shave it again.
I almost certainly will again at some time, I loved it!
@@MyGreenCloset No, your hair is beautiful.
Not cool - not your call, and it's rude to criticize someone else's choices for their own body.
