Astounded to hear so many anecdotes and stories of Bhagavan that I have not heard or read anywhere else....this video and ALL the David Godman videos are a treasure........many blessings......
Thank YOU David-ji. No words to describe how grateful I am for this remarkable series you have created. So beautifully narrated and edited. Thank You for giving us all such a personal and involved darshan of Bhagavan.
Thank u Davidji.I just can't stop seeing the videos about bagavan because I don't know about these facts about bagavan and I can't eat.properly for sometime 🙏🙏🙏
So appreciate your presence here. Cannot express enough how helpful and joyful these videos are to view, to the sadahna of devotees of Ramana, such as myself.
Dear Sri David ......I cannot thank you enough for your presentations on Sri Ramana. I have seen almost every episode of your heartfelt narratives and enjoyed thoroughly !!! You are a true bhakta..........devotion to guru is same as devotion to GOD. Your explanations are so pure and pristine.....
There’s only one TINY little problem with what you wrote above, Sir.☝️ There has never been, nor will there ever be, even the SLIGHTEST shred of evidence for the existence of the Godhead, that is, a Supreme Person or Deity.🤓 It is high time for humanity to awaken from all INANE superstitions such as the belief in a Personal God which created the Universe, would you not agree, Slave? 😩
What a down to earth narrative starting at Patala Lingam from one of Bhagawans devotees or call desciples. I wish I had present in those days to serve Bhagawan. I am fortunate that I have lived in this land when the two of the greatest of realized souls mankind has ever produced Bhagawan Ramana and Mahaperiya Mahaperiya graced this earth. Om namo Bhagwate Ramanaya , Om namo Mahaperiyava Bhagawane
David Goldman ...Can’t thank enough for your inner research about the patala lingam and Bhagwan. Excellent information which feels pleasant and peaceful. Thank You :) God bless you :)
Been a few years since I looked at Sri Ramana Maharshi on UA-cam (I haven't been idle in enquiry). So pleasing to come back and find a happy store of highly informed insight into his life and practice from David Godman. Thanks David. Some time ago I wanted to go to Arunachala but either couldn't resolve (on an limiting intellectual level) the ideas that the mountain was form with an enquiry into formless truth. That, or maybe my grasp and certainty was frail and I didn't want to be disappointed/knocked if it didn't live up to expectations. I feel inspired to go. Thank you.
i went there and stayed at a hotel/ashram called siva-samithi at Rs. 300 a day (after negotiating).. this place is right opposite, across the street from Ramanashramam.... it was worth it. when you are there, please buy the book "Guru Ramana" by S.S. Cohen available in the bookshop inside Sri Ramanashramam. also witness the daily ritual beginning around 7 in the Ramana-Ashram.. i have never experienced anything quite like it. the devotion of the pilgrims, both indian and westerners, is a sight to behold..
Siva Sannidhi is a name of a hotel, not ashram. U can book room in the ashram through this - stay@gururamana.org , the fooding n lodging is free there. Yes, the experience of the quietness is so beautiful in Arunachala along with the ashram that one finds the attraction to go there again n again.
Did you visit Thiruvannamalai? I’m just curious to know. The legend is that the mountain itself is God there. We’ve to get a call from Him to visit/stay with Him. It’s not like other places which we plan to visit. I live around 500 KMS from Thiruvannamalai but have visited only twice in 37 years. He has to decide, it’s not in our hands.
Hi David, Thanks for the great videos. A note on the Patala Lingam: Patala may not be the name of any saint. Patala is the word in tamizh/sanskrit for the netherworld. It can also be used to mean underground. So 'Patala Lingam' might just mean 'Underground Lingam'. Yours in Bhagavan
I was in the Patala Lingam about thirty years ago with Lakshmana Swamy. He noted the direction that the drainage outlet of the yoni was pointing and remarked that this is how lingams are erected on saint samadhis. If it is a Siva lingam, it points one way, and if it is a saint lingam, it points the opposite way. I hadn't noticed that before, but I took his word for it since he seems to know what he is talking about on matters such as these. Also, he tends to feel power in such places that is associated with the origins of the lingam. I am guessing that he first somehow felt that this was the samadhi of a saint, and that he then commented on it by mentioning about the direction of the yoni outlet, which seemed to confirm his original feeling that there was a dead saint interred there. I think the name and circumstances of the man under the lingam is lost in history, and the name now just reflects the fact the the lingam is situated below ground level. Patala is the second of the seven levels of Hindu hells, so it might be nearer the surface than the five below it. The seventh is the worst hell, but I am not sure if that also means that is is located further below the earth. I called him 'Saint Patala' in jest. I should have made it clearer that his name was not known and that the name probably derived from the underground location of his samadhi.
David Godman Hi David, Thanks for the clarification. I was not trying to dispute the possibility of the Patala Lingam being the samadhi of a saint. Was merely trying to point out that the name may not be 'Saint Patala'. Here is an excerpt from Letters from Sri Ramanasramam: *************************************** (240) PATALA LINGA (THE UNDERGROUND LINGA) .. One of the devotees who had witnessed all the festivities when the shrine was declared open, addressing Bhagavan, said, “Nowhere do we find cellars in Thousand-pillared mandapams. What can be the reason for the existence of a cellar here?” Bhagavan replied, “No, they are usually not in existence anywhere. The reason for its existence here is because some important person passed away, and his body was buried there and a Linga was installed thereon. As the Linga was there much before the construction of the thousand-pillared Mandapam it was not disturbed but was left as it was. The remaining portion of the ground was raised and the Mandapam was erected. That is why the Linga is underneath the Mandapam which remains like a cave. Later on, steps leading to the place were constructed. When I was staying there it was full of dust. Excepting the elephant on the Mandapam and myself in the cellar, no one else used to be there.” We were all surprised at hearing the circumstances under which the cellar came into existence. .. *************************************** Another interesting thing to note is that the Patala Lingam is actually at ground level. It is only 'underground' relative to the 1000-pillar mandapam. Yours in Bhagavan
ramprax I was actually agreeing with you when I wrote my comment. I think the name of the saint has been lost to history, and the current name denotes the location of the samadhi (underground) rather than the person who was buried there.
Bhagwan Ramana ("Day by Day" page 259) "The first day when I begged, I felt bashful about it as a result of habits of upbringing, but after that there was absolutely no feeling of abasement. I felt like a king and more than a king."

David, what do you think the burning sensation in his body was that got grounded by hugging the lingam? Maybe some Shakti or Kundalini energy?

A sincere question, why would Ramana feel shy about begging having so fully realized the Self ?
Bhagwan Ramana ("Day by Day" page 259) "The first day when I begged, I felt bashful about it as a result of habits of upbringing, but after that there was absolutely no feeling of abasement. I felt like a king and more than a king."
No one ever realized the self.
Patala refers to underground . Don't think it refers to any saint called patala .
