The best books to read to learn about geisha and maiko are these in no particular order.
1) A geisha's journey, my life as a Kyoto apprentice by Komomo and Naoyuki.
2) Autobiography of a Geisha by Sayu Masuda who was sometimes a geisha and sometimes a yuujo, called double registered.
3)Geisha by Dr. Liza Dalby (it's probably the best geisha book written by an outsider let into the geisha world-it's basically the geisha bible)
4)Geisha, A life: by Mineko Iwasaki- The best geisha book ever written as it's literally the geisha that MoaG was loosely based off of. (the second geisha bible)
5)Geisha: a living tradition by Kyoko Aihara.
6)Geisha and Maiko of Kyoto by John Paul Foster.

I did not appreciate the comments calling Geisha creatures and commodities. These women are human beings, and should be recognised as such, as well as for their skills, training and discipline.

In the time of "CORONAVIRUS WORLD WAR - 3" in 2020 when your own life is at the hands of a invisible pandemic it's cinema and documentaries that breaks all barriers and provides solace and entertainment in the confines of a @t a "Mariine Engineer" employed in the shipping Industry between 1983 -2006 haves sailed the seven seas and visited a few Japanese ports during voyages.Among Japanese city's Tokyo,Nagoya and Yokohama fascinated me and now this video explains traditional high class Japanese culture.Hearing the terms "Maiko" and "Geiko" for the first time as the average tourist or reader only hears of the word "Geisha" in Japanese literature and culture.Minimum 5 years apprenticeship for a "MAIKO" who then graduates to a "GEIKO" is incredible education and study.The fact that heads of State and Business Conglomerates have to take a appointment to visit a "GEISHA" by appointment speaks volumes of their status in Japanese society.After seeing this video the average person will not confuse a "GEISHA" to a "HIGH CLASS PROSTITUTE". This 'documentary' is what happens when you don't let people from their own countries tell the stories of their own customs.
Wait, they said clearly that this movie was NOT meant as a documentary but an impression of that time, the director is entitled to take artistic license as he choses. As for the Chinese actors playing Japanese geishas, well it’s kind of saying that straight actors can’t play gay roles. Although I understand the importance of representation, these women truly did a phenomenal acting job - which is what it’s all about at the end of the day. You may have authentic Japanese casting who wouldn’t be able to deliver the same depth of emotions, with a group dynamic that would be completely off.
Are you ignorant? Geishas were people of secrets you literally were not allowed to tell stories or leak information like that LMAO that's why there's interpretation but pop off.
Japan makes them take a vow of silence so foreigners have no choice but to make assumptions about the culture. Japan should let their own people have a voice so the information can be accurate.

Well from this documentry you can conclude that geisha are talented women with gentle and polite way of speech, and have pride in their work as well as respect for their senior's which also shows their value for their work. Well of course it all comes down to nothing in a male dominant society which is the same for every women in any profession in ancient times which has reduced a lot now. But I admire the fact that they did not lose their tradition with the foreign invasion and kept their traditional clothes up-to now.

There's also at least one instance of an image of wedding ceremony when they are talking about the relationship between a geisha and a client. Just because there's a pale, Japanese girl in a fancy kimono doesn't mean she's a geisha. xD

Tragically bad images. The tea ceremony alone is beyond terrible! The geisha’s “kimono” is a robe probably made for the tourist market. Such lovely and talented ladies and this is the disservice they get. The words aren’t bad. The images on the other hand…avert your eyes.

@@lunamai5668 whether you like it or not, the subject of your book was screwed over by the author, and it had a giant negative impact on her life. maybe it's just me, but if i found out my favorite book was full of lies, passed off as truth, at the expense and safety of the person the book was written about, it would no longer be my favorite book. do you think iwasaki's opinion of that book is any different than mine?

@@lunamai5668 It used to be one of my favorite books too, until I started researching the subject more and found how damaging it was with all the inaccuracies that Arthur Golden casually threw in without any regard to how it was going to affect the real geisha culture, now it's a book I can't even stand to look at. It's a very pretty flowery book, but that's about it.
In the first 3 minutes of this movie, I've heard these words and phrases: inscrutable; enigmatic; Oriental; and the word "creatures" applied to geisha, who are human beings. So far, this is not a history of geisha or a description of them as masters of hospitality and traditional arts, but a long list of racist dog whistles. I checked the date, expecting to see that this was made in the 1960s or 1970s, but no, this was posted in 2018. Wow. Just wow.
I think this was either made in the 90's or early 2000's. I suspect it was created after Memoirs of a Geisha became so popular, unfortunately a lot of the documentaries that came out during that time just parroted the false information that the book and movie stated, making it more difficult to correct people's misconceptions.

This is an admiring documentary, certainly not racist. You're an insulated, tittle-tattler trying to fit in with the cool kids. It's tedious. One day you'll grow up and realize you are a product of your times, just as the makers of this were of theirs. And the geishas of their particular cultural peak. Get over it and forgive people instead of manufacturing outrage; you're no better than the rest of us. The ranting, accusations and fingerpointing may be the way your tribe signal their membership to the group but the rest of humanity wish you would just shut up.

Here's an idea for kids, who get into trouble with the law and cause trouble. Instead of juvy, arrange for them to spend a few years training as a Geisha and Kabuki performers. There would definitely be a LOT of discipline and self-discipline to gain.

I agree with you! And Gion is pronounced with a hard "g" like game. These narrators have no clue. And as for the person doing the pictures, they often show pictures of oiran instead of maiko or geiko. Oiran were prostitutes. Their wore more ornaments in their hair, had bare feet and tied their obi in the front. HUGE DIFFERENCE!!

This is one of the worst excuses for a documentary I've seen in a while. Did he actually site a FICTIONAL novel as a source? I'm fifteen minutes deep, not a single picture of a geisha, not even a maiko. Terrible.

To all the people in this comment section proclaiming that Geishas, Oiran and prostitutes are synonyms, would you kindly enlighten us with the sources of your wisdom? And maybe enlighten us as to why there were so many distinct regulations put in place to differentiate them by their attire? (Hairstyle, adornments, kimono and patterns, position of the obi "knot", just to name a few)
Why would you have to have a license for art and prostitution separately if they were the same?
Please understand that my passive aggressive tone does not equate to me claiming to be an expert in the rich history of Geisha. I have done but little reading out of interest, and have found conflicting sources on various details, eg. tayu referring to the highest rank of Oiran VS. Geisha. However, to blatantly throw the three terms into the same pot without even bothering to quote sources does an incredible disservice to everyone, particularly the geisha and maiko of today who most certainly aren't prostitutes and still have to battle this prejudice.
Geisha are not prostitutes. Anything sexual is secondary to their true purpose, as entertainers. They learn dance, singing, fashion and hair, and many other skills that take years to learn. A prostitute's main purpose is sexual. They usually have few if any other skills. Geisha have been around in Japan for hundreds of years and the first ones were actually MALE if you can believe that. They have some connection with traditional Japanese theater.

@@skullslace2426 I did. Did I miss spell male? I’ve had voice typing do that to me a few times. The history of that culture is very interesting and I knew very little about it. My father lived for three years in Japan with a Japanese family and learned to have a great deal of respect for their culture. I don’t know if he was ever in contact with any geisha or not but he did know that they were not prostitutes. The family he stayed with me having lightened him. I actually did not know about the male Geisha before. Just the women. I’m not sure on this but I believe kabuki theater is still all male although I could be wrong.

While I appreciate the artistry and dedication to craft of geishas, I can't help but feel annoyed that the entertainments are for men only. I know it's "tradition." But it seems so discriminatory. Why can't women go to tea houses to enjoy the beautiful dances, the singing, the music and the charm of geishas providing excellent service and fun? The fact that fewer and fewer young women are entering the geisha lifestyle shows it's not just western women but Japanese women who see the tradition as outdated and too confining. There are also many more avenues and opportunities available for women to be prosperous.

Hiya, I'm late to this but yes, some of the music used is Chinese. Easiest way to diferentiate is to listen for specific instruments- Japanese music has shamisen and/or shakuhachi while Chinese music has erhu and dizi. Also, Chinese music more commonly uses major scale while Japanese music is almost always in minor scale. Hope this answers your question

Yes, this is a cheaply made production; it's made by Liam Dale of Great Britain, who seems to be sole proprietor of a low-end documentary film production company. I think he went to school before political correctness attained its death grip on our school systems. He may not be aware that "oriental" has been relegated to the same bin that "negro" was around 1970.

Would have watched this documentary because it is fascinating to learn about the culture, but I couldn't stand to listen to the boring voice of the commenataor. My dad was stationed in Japan when I was little and lived there for 4 years and would have loved to learned about the history of the Geisha, but just cannot listen to this gentleman speaking. They are beautiful women and have to train all their lives. Maybe I can find another documentary about it.

The book memoirs of a geisha is so fascinating. I read after my visit to japan in 1997. I recommend to anyone who is intrigued by this mystical culture.

Why are they not concerned with catching diseases that can be passed by drinking after another person infected w/something? Are the napkins used during the ceremony sanitized?
Not sure .... this may have been filmed before the pandemic and all the concern. Sharing cups has been an Asian custom for a very long time. These days they probably do sanitize the napkins! One way to find out might be to try and connect online with the health department in Japan if you can find a page in English and ask them. I'd be surprised if they were NOT concerned about this, especially since China where the pandemic started is so close.
The lipstick is applied to the lower lip, not the upper.
Painting only the bottom lip is a tradition reserved only for Maiko who are in their first year of training (Except for Pontocho who paint both lips) This tradition is mostly practiced in Kansai, I haven't seen any first year apprentices from other regions.
People do not understand what geisha are and until they do. Their comments are just non understanding thoughts. If they get the true knowledge about true geisha then they will understand what they do and who they are.
