queerness has been orbiting allie’s career since the very beginning since her sound and lyrics have a lot of camp elements to it. it’s not sure if she considers herself nonbynary but she’s been heavily supportive and supported by the queer community. she’s been out since 2015 and only really broke out into the mainstream in 2020 with the album ‘cape god’. there has always been some kind of bitterness being an allie fan since she has really been slept on by the music industry (ugh). which is crazy because in queer spaces (here in brazil) she is as big as charli, slayyyter, rina or even gaga. i don’t think i can even count how many nights i danced to her songs at clubs partying in 2016/17/18. that’s why i think slept on me and staying power are such brilliant records, for how they reflect everything that she endured during her career, like she got it all out. loved the reaction!! it will be cool to see you dive into her discography if u are interested. i’m sure you will not be disappointed!!

This album is going to be endless. I love it!
Glad you enjoyed “off with her t***s”. I recommend you check out Jazmin Bean’s Traumatic Livelehood, her debut album. Jazmin is nonbinary so I think you’d appreciate the lyrics. It’s my favorite album of the year so far.

I love your reactions. You really put a lot of thought into what song means to you. Originally watched for Chappelle Roan but now you got a fan!

This was an incredible review and reaction. I'm sooooo glad you felt recognised in this music and recommendation.
This album is incredible and quite the accomplished given it's complex themes that balance humour and emotion, or could come across bitter at times but never does.

Some recommendations if you're looking for other releases which have come out this year:
    - Nadine Shah - Filthy Underneath
    - Empress Of - For Your Consideration
    - Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well
    - Maggie Rogers - Don't Forget Me
Upcoming ones I'm personally excited for:
    - St Vincent - All Born Screaming
    - Aurora - What Happened to the Heart?
    - London Grammar - The Greatest Love
Also, if you're loving the 80s vibe I think you might really like ionnalee. She's just released the first single(s) from her upcoming double album - CLOSE YOUR EYES/BLUND. The song's called "innocence of sound" and it's so wonderfully synth pop.

    OMG, check out softscars!
You'll probably love it and I'd like to hear your perspective on the whole concept of trauma throughout the album.

I loved your reaction!!!! This album definitely does feel like it belongs in a queer space and it’s so hauntingly beautiful throughout. This is my favorite album that came out of 2023. Black eye is about her relationship with life itself and the idea that life is going to keep punching you in the face and it’s about rolling with those punches. Also totally not in the same realm of Allie X - though you should check out her other projects, Arlo Parks has some incredible stuff that you should check out for sure :)

This is Allie X's first completely self produced album and I think that really allowed her to just have fun and do whatever she feels like.
On the note of diversifying more, how about checking out some country maybe? Yola and Orville Peck comes to mind. Throwing some other stuff at the wall that are less recommendations and more like mindstorming for other people to maybe comment on:
    - Aurora
    - Dorian Electra (gay af hyperpop hellye)
    - Seinabo Sey
    - Christine and the Queens
    - BANKS
    - Kelsey Lu
    - St. Vincent (this is my personal recommendation)
    - Infinity Song
    - Hemlocke Springs
    - Japanese Breakfast
I could go on forever heh but I'll stop myself

Oh and if you're gonna check out more Allie X I'd recommend Cape God for the lyrics and production, I'm biased though since it is my favorite project of hers

Yes! I love her! “Sorry I haven’t Called” was one of my favorite albums last year. But my favorite song from her is “Water Me Down”.

Glad you love this album! I’m such a huge Allie fan, so it’s always good to see other people love her too. A few additional thoughts on this album’s tracks:
    - I’m unsure if Off With Her Tits was meant to be about a non-binary identity? If Allie’s enby she’s never spoken on it publicly, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there, ofc. And ofc, if that’s how it speaks to you, then listen to that. Personally, I read a discomfort with sexuality, and the way her body is sexualized into the song.
    - John and Jonathan are in fact gay! They’re a real life couple she met after one of her concerts.
    - Galina was an old woman who made an herbal eczema cream for Allie, but she lost her memory without telling anybody her recipe so her hand cream is unfortunately gone for good.
    - I suspect Black Eye is about her chronic illness! For some backstory on the album, she had to end the tour for her previous album early because of her autoimmune disorder, and she used the time to learn to produce and focus on music. Black Eye is about using music and the way it vitalizes you to push through the pain.
    - I think Staying Power is at least partially about her illness too. Us chronically ill folk have a particular relationship with resilience, where it’s often something we simultaneously celebrate about ourselves, but also kind of resent due to the circumstances-it’s not like we have an alternative. That’s why I read Staying Power as sarcastic-I’m literally dying and my body is falling apart and everything sucks, but hey, at least I’ve got ✨staying power✨.
    - Truly Dreams is so fun! My notes for this aren’t on the lyrics, just that sonically this feels right at home with some of Allie’s earlier projects. I have a soft spot for the song just because I love that style of unabashedly fun synth pop.
If you are interested in listening to more of Allie’s music, I’d recommend Collxtion II or Cape God next! Collxtion II is the one I mentioned Truly Dreams sounds like, while Cape God is less synth-y and more of a melancholic indie album. Both are excellent though!

In an interview Allie X has actually stated that John and Jonathan are named after a gay couple that are fans of her music! So you're reading of them being a gay couple is completely valid!
