It was roughly one year ago. A certain Australian chef+idol made a cover of Ievan Polkka and mentioned that her favorite version of Ievan Polkka was this one. This is certainly the best nightcore song I've listened to.

The history and evolution of this song fascinates me, and in my opinion perfectly encapsulates the culture of humanity as a whole. Long before the birth of the original Ievan Polkka, the song existed as a very old traditional finnish polkka tune. No one is sure exactly where/when the tune originated; it could have been around for centuries. The first version with words from which all the popular modern versions are derrived was written by a Finnish composer named Eino Kettunen in the early 1930s, entiled 'Ievan Polkka' (pronounced ā-vɑn). The words are about a girl named Ieva (can also be read as Eva) who sneaks out of the house at night to her neighbors' party and dances all night. It briefly became very popular after WW2, but then faded back into obscurity until a Finnish quartet called Loituma included an acapella version of the polkka on ther debut album in 1995. It was later introduced to the United States in 1998 on the album 'Things of Beauty' from the same quartet. It's a perfect reflection of the human experience; each of us take in the world through our perception, picking out things that speak to us and making them a part of who we are, and then passing those gifts on to those who come after us who will do the same, each generation leaving an imprint of their mind and their vision. Everything good in the world was a gift from those who came before us, given to us as bits and pieces of culture that made an impression on us, giving us the tools to build a culture of our own. Now with the internet, we have the ability to share the culture we are creating with everyone, regardless of geography. Heck, this song originated in Finland, but is now popular worldwide, primarily thanks to the internet. We've been given a very powerful tool, and with it we are collectively constructing a culture unlike anything the world has ever seen. It's for these reasons that I find the story of Ievan Polkka deeply inspiring, even if to everyone else It's just a meme.

The history and evolution of this song fascinates me, and in my opinion perfectly encapsulates the culture of humanity as a whole.
Long before the birth of the original Ievan Polkka, the song existed as a very old traditional finnish polkka tune. No one is sure exactly where/when the tune originated; it could have been around for centuries.
The first version with words from which all the popular modern versions are derrived was written by a Finnish composer named Eino Kettunen in the early 1930s, entiled 'Ievan Polkka' (pronounced ā-vɑn). The words are about a girl named Ieva (can also be read as Eva) who sneaks out of the house at night to her neighbors' party and dances all night. It briefly became very popular after WW2, but then faded back into obscurity until a Finnish quartet called Loituma included an acapella version of the polkka on ther debut album in 1995. It was later introduced to the United States in 1998 on the album 'Things of Beauty' from the same quartet.
It was semi-popular as a piece of music at this point, but things really took off in 2006 when a flash animation surfaced on the internet featuring a scat singing (a style of singing where there are no words, just random sounds that the singer feels flow well together) of the song, set over an animation of the character Orihime Inoue from the anime 'Bleach' spinning a leek. Many of you have probably seen the animation, referred to as 'Loituma Girl' or 'Leekspin'.
The most popular version by far, however, was the next evolution of the song: the Hatsune Miku version. There is a Japanese voice synthesizer program called Vocaloid, designed specifically for generating singing voices. The software includes several different voices, each asssociated with an avatar, collectively called 'Vocaloids'. The most popular vocaloid is Hatsune Miku, and in 2007 a vocaloid cover of the Leekspin song surfaced on the internet (unfortunately, the original video is no longer available) featuring Hatsune Miku's voice.
That version, the vocaloid cover, has since had many remixes, including an updated arrangement in 2011 from a project called Project Diva. That arrangement was the basis for the VSNS remix, which came out a year ago.
This leads us where we are now: listening to a nightcore verion of a remix of an arrangement of a cover of a cover of a cover of a 1930s Finnish folk song set to a traditional Finnish polkka that could potentially be centuries older. This song has rippled through time like a wave in the ocean, transcending generations and managing to stay popular for literally hundreds of years, each generation sculpting the song in a way that speaks to them, and then gifting their creation to the generation after. It's beautiful in a way, that hidden beneath the surface of this simple EDM track are layers of design stretching back in time, each bearing the fingerprint of the culture of a generation.
It's a perfect reflection of the human experience; each of us take in the world through our perception, picking out things that speak to us and making them a part of who we are, and then passing those gifts on to those who come after us who will do the same, each generation leaving an imprint of their mind and their vision. Everything good in the world was a gift from those who came before us, given to us as bits and pieces of culture that made an impression on us, giving us the tools to build a culture of our own. Now with the internet, we have the ability to share the culture we are creating with everyone, regardless of geography. Heck, this song originated in Finland, but is now popular worldwide, primarily thanks to the internet. We've been given a very powerful tool, and with it we are collectively constructing a culture unlike anything the world has ever seen.
It's for these reasons that I find the story of Ievan Polkka deeply inspiring, even if to everyone else It's just a meme.
