  • When the first electric locomotive pulls into Mukran in 1989, the whole of Rügen celebrates. At last, more towns in the east of Rügen, including Saßnitz and Binz, are connected to the GDR's electrified railway network. It is now possible to travel by train from Bad Schandau in Saxony over a distance of 67 to the island in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Deputy Minister of Transport and Deputy Director General of Deutsche Reichsbahn Herbert Keddi describes the further measures to expand the rail network and rail transport, praises the adherence to the timetable and the progress in rail transport operations.
