    Fun fact about Prince: I live less than two miles away from his house. When he passed, it came out that he was known to show up in local public schools’ offices and hand them a 5-figure check and say “it’s for your school’s arts programs” 🎵 🖼️ 🎭 🩰

    Prince was never typical r&b ...he created a catagoy all of his own.... Around the world and a day album, and the Parade album, are jus a taste of who Mr Nelson was and his OWN category and what he brought to the table with full orchestra, back in the mid/late 80s when it wasn't cool. And he never tried to be mainstream or have radio play his music on heavy rotation...The GENIUS of Prince is/was, every album he put out, was always different from the next...and he did not have to play his hits at his concerts to have a successful tour....he could play other musicians music and do it better than they could...Be it rock jazz a lil rap...r&b...He did not write music for accolades or for critics...he made millions walking his own path....NO ONE in today's music can lead sing with a guitar strapped to their person jump of a 6' riser in heels do the splits grab his microphone hit his que on point 99% of the time...Over 20 concerts under my belt with Mr Nelson....it's been a Wonderful life....if your ever feeling uninspired and need a lil inspiration in life please give a listen to the "1999" the song "FREE" and the lyrics.. he was in his 20s when he wrote this and it takes you there. .💜(+>

    Ahh. I’m so so glad you enjoyed that. And yes, that is all Prince on all vocals (and instruments except the horns.) Such a beautiful song that got to be so popular because radio DJ’s decided to play it anyway, even if it wasn’t released as a single. Just pure magic.

    One of his best written songs

  • @ulf1831
    @ulf1831 Рік тому +11

    Made in 1986/1987 on analog equipment. Except the horns, although arranged by him, EVERYTHING from the layered background vocals, not a choir, but layered vocals to the piano organ throughout the ENTIRE song to the perfect drum programming is arranged, produced, composed and performed by Prince, all by himself.
    Now, this is not only the best ballad of the 80's period. This could definitely be of all time.
    THIS is one of the reasons you just need to get into Prince. Ethereal upon ethereal production that sounds as fresh today like no other music from that decade. The harmonies and dynamics are timeless in this cut from, again, 1987(!!!!)

    A few minutes after Prince was a millionaire at 18. The music company snapped him up real quick
    When they say he was a creative genius, they need to find another word because this guy was unbelievable. Every song you listen to he has so much creativity that it's something I've never seen in one artist. I first heard him in 1977 The year I graduated from high school and I knew he was something special then

    Traditional R&B. Prince grew up in the 70's when every black male R&B group had a killer falsetto singer.

    • @sandragray4598
      @sandragray4598 Рік тому

      This is most definitely not a traditional R&B song. I hear more jazz influences than anything, but also something classical music about it. Really there is nothing ever about Prince that is traditional. He doesn't fall into any patterns.

    • @keithmurphy5356
      @keithmurphy5356 Рік тому +1

      @@sandragray4598 It's traditional R&B in the sense that it's a throwback to how free R&B was in the 70s. R&B is P's base. He could do everything from rock, funk to a little jazz here and there. But he always came back to his R&B roots. Also, "Adore" itself was inspired by the quiet storm slow jams of Luther Vandross and Patti LaBelle (from Prince's own words). This was his love letter to the genre....

    • @warrenwilliams3715
      @warrenwilliams3715 4 місяці тому +1

      I 100% agree, although the only vocalist in that class that could stand up to Prince’s vocal prowess would be Phillip Bailey. He was THE falsetto behind “The. Elements”, Earth, Wind & Fire and a standout solo artist in his own right.

    • @creditorclass6513
      @creditorclass6513 4 місяці тому

      @warrenwilliams3715 Bailey can hang with anyone in the highest of highs but Prince can start high and drop way down to the lowest bass in a couple of lyrics.

    I'm glad I stumbled upon this channel. I was 15 when Prince broke out with his 1979 album. He had an album before that but it didn't make a splash like his 2nd one did. There are so few artists that are in his category. He was a prolific writer, a note-perfect singer, an amazing musician (who played every instrument on his first album), and specifically, one of the best guitarists in Rock history. If you haven't seen it, check out his guitar solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". It's a master class. Good on you for exposing a new generation to the genius, and I mean real genius, that was Prince.

  • @oskarobit

    First things first, great reaction. Just watching your smiles and moves is enough to see how you enjoyed this song. Put in the list "Prince LIVE is the best way to discover his multiple abilities, vocals, presence, charisma, musicianship, showmanship, virtuosity and own light". Trust me he didn't need fireworks, spaceships, 200 dancers and 200 million watts lightning up the stage to deliver a show to remember. He was the best -rock- star ever, period, no competitors get closer to his multiple talents.
    About R&B...
    A monkey with a smartphone can write in the Wikipedia. This amazing piece of art is more an elegant, slow tempo music, closer to jazz than to R&B (the original sound or today's music for elevators, whatever you chose). When people "without musical ears" deliver tags here and there, things like this happen. Those are the guys tagging as flamenco the shitty music of Rosalía. Call me purist, old man or whatever you want, I'm happy with that.

    I’m diggin the way you’re diggin Prince. I’ve been a Purple Family member since 1981 and had the privilege to see him in concert 17 times. You’re critiques are pretty spot on , which is saying ALOT. As you continue your journey you’ll find that Purple Family members are quite passionate about Prince and are highly sophisticated in their musical taste. Prince was simply beyond anything that had come before him and it still remains that way. Just to clear up some revisionist history you may hear when it comes to this album , it was released 3 years after the commercial success of Purple Rain and MANY had jumped off the band wagon , the sales were minuscule compared to Purple Rain but the real Purple people knew this was epic.

    I just came upon your channel today and when I heard your comment about only ever hearing one Prince song I just about died! Granted I do live in his hometown of Minneapolis so we are quite fond of him here but he is a legend beyond legends. The power and sass and funk and sex appeal and genius that Prince contained in his petite 5'2 body is beyond comprehension. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch his first live performance of ☔Purple Rain☔ at First Avenue in Minneapolis. He makes up the ever famous riff of the song on the spot. The world lost him way too early.

The emotion and intention behind the lyrics just blow me away every time I hear it. It’s also definitely a track you want to make love to. Yup...That's Prince on everything except sax, horn and viola. The background vocals, Linn Drum percussion, organ, bass, ect all Prince. The man was insanely talented. "Adore" is top tier Prince. Also discount folks saying that "Adore" wasn't traditional R&B/soul. Everyone knows Prince blurred musical genres. But "Adore"was Prince telling his (Black) fans who were with him since "I Wanna Be Your Lover," songs like "Head" and "Let's Work" and who LOVED the Time's first two records (Prince, wrote, produced and played on them) that he still had command of that genre. And it worked. "Adore" has since become a Black radio staple.

When I think of 80's R&B first comes to mind is singers like Al.B Sure, Keith Sweat, Bobby Brown, Luther Vandross, artists like this. Prince to me doesn't sound like any of them. I don't think Prince can be categorized because of his ability cross over different genres. But I do understand your point of R&B.

    When Prince died without a will, there was a long legal battle over his estate. His parents were deceased but he was survived by a sister and several half-siblings. They and other “business interests” all spent years fighting for control over his property. Especially the vault found in his home containing what is rumored to be a collection of several full, unreleased albums…over 50 never before seen music videos…and 8000 (give or take) unpublished pieces of original Prince music. Can you imagine what magic that musical prodigy may have left behind? Will we ever be privileged enough to hear it? But then…would it still be Pure Prince or would it be…something else…

    Prince did his philanthropy discreetly and privately. He never showed up himself with checks. Don’t know where that story came from. He would direct his office to send checks and donations anonymously. Only a few recipients disclosed Prince’s donations while he was still alive. Since his “transition” the full extent of his philanthropic efforts have come out.

    Most definitely not traditional R&B nor Soul. It is his own fusion of styles. I feel jazz and even classical music play heavily in this song, shown mostly in the instrumentation. The bass is the only thing that harkens to Funk, possibly early R&B ballads (not the later more pop-styled R&B) to me. I mean, this song is probably best listen to in a dim lit room with a glass of wine. After hearing this song, I really knew that even if Prince had been born in the times of Mozart, etc, we'd be studying and listening to his music still. 'Lush' has always been my favorite word used to describe this song.

    Not my favourite song, it sounds a bit to "nice" to my taste, and I prefer his more strange tracks, when he really goes in an unexpected direction. But it’s simply a matter of personal taste, whatever this man did is always something else.
    If you decide to explore, the whole album Sign O’ the times is a great choice, it contains a very wide variety of styles.
    When it comes to ballads, I’ll opt for "Damn U" because it’s a great piece of vocal jazz, and really, what he does on this song in term of vocal work is technically difficult, AND he makes it sound absolutely natural and effortless ( which speaks volume about hard work) and the whole song has a special ” foggy” atmosphere that I like a lot.
