Welcome to our UA-cam channel, solely dedicated to words.
Say Your Word is a digital platform by the acclaimed novelist, storyteller and women’s rights activist Elif Shafak.
A platform for words and anyone who cares about them.
Language is the key to understanding and unlocking our world.
It is also the key to the human heart.
Words are often said to have power.
What is not said that often is that they can hurt and even spread hatred and hostility, just like they can heal and bring about love, empathy and wisdom.
They can divide, distance and "dehumanise", just like they can connect and “rehumanise" those who have been dehumanised.
East and West, North and South, regardless of race, sex, gender, colour, religion, ethnicity, nationality or any other category, we are all made of stories.
Stories bring us together, untold stories keep us apart.
    Today's word is DADDY ISSUES.

Personally I would have been a lot happier without my destructive father - may he rest in peace.

You are so lovely. You are definitely my favorite teacher. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have your videos about words here every week. I learned a lot of things from you and the journey goes on. A couple of weeks ago I read a compilation about feminism and it changed the way I see myself and so does what you told us today. I will meditate on the way I have seen manhood and fatherhood till now and I will try to change a little bit the perspective.

Dear Elif, i always appreciate the perspectives you give and the different aspects on them. My daughter is a Teenager and sometimes she is wondering, why society is expecting very less from men, but at the same time admiring them so much, just because they are men. She has observed that women never get the same recognition even though they are showing more performance in day-to-day life. While i was listening to you and had at the same time the thoughts of my young daughter in the backround of my mind, i was thinking and wondering, what if men are maybe not good fathers because no one is expecting from them to be good or better persons/ fathers or generally not demanding from them to became better versions of theirselves ??? So maybe they are never questioning themselves and as a result there can't be any development also in being a good father 🤷🏻‍♀️???!!!????

Society admire men because of Their Contribution.
From Newton to Nikola Telsa all great scientist are men who have invented great things that changed the world.
From military to Construction all dangerous and hard work done by men.
Without men the society will collapse in few seconds.

I don't know whether you live under the rock or not.
But I think you are lying about status of women in society.
Women get more than what they deserves.
In military exam women have lower standards in exam for same Job compared to men.
Society is not biased your eye is biased.

Thank you for highlighting this 💜💜
I do not like this term. It is a simplistic and dismissive way of describing such complex and deep rooted issues and it's an example, at least to me, of how language hurts.
It's almost always used in a derogatory way, and almost always used solely to describe women. Men with absent fathers who engage in dysfunctional relationships and perpetuate this always escape this label, whilst women do not; it is incredibly unfair and misogynistic.
This language is symptomatic of people who are failing to understand the real issues at hand.
I too grew up with an absent father, and I agree that the impact can be profound.
If you don't grow up seeing healthy adult relationships, it can be challenging to replicate that in your adulthood and set healthy boundaries. Children that deal with abandonment carry these scars with them as they grow up and it causes self esteem and trust issues.
It's helpful to talk about these things openly and non-judgementally, to go to therapy, to be told that the decisions of adults when you were a child is never your fault and doesn't have to determine your future, but what isn't helpful is for someone to imply you're emotionally 'damaged' and have 'daddy issues.'
    ✨✨
Gloria Steinem said in 'Revolution from Within' that we can return, recognize what happened and reparent ourselves as adults and she quotes from Earnest Hemingway's 'A Farewell to Arms' "The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places." I think about this a lot.

Who exactly is worth listening to that is giving shitty fathers a free ride or is not placing the responsibility of abandoning a child with the father?

    • @ultimate6243

Denial of joint custody is normalized in our society.
Men are asked to pay child support even if the man didn't get to see his own child for 5 years.
Father's are not abandoning child. It's shitty mother who becoming the barrier/wall between the Father and Child.
25% American children growup without the involvment of Father. The reason is 50% divorce rate and denial of Joint custody to Father.
70% Divorce is initiated by women. It means Women are separating Father from Child and family Courts don't give joint custody.

      1) Not everyone is American
      2) Blanket blaming a particular group of people in a difficult situation is bound to lead to stupid conclusions - men or women.
