  • Who among us has never been stung by a jellyfish? We know what it feels like: a painful reaction and visible streaks of inflammation on the skin. It's definitely an unpleasant experience. Let's see what happens when a jellyfish stings us.
Jellyfish, belonging to the Cnidaria phylum, are not aggressive creatures, but accidental contact with their tentacles can release substances that sting the skin, causing irritation, itching, redness and swelling. Fortunately, Mediterranean jellyfish are generally not very dangerous compared to those of tropical seas and Australian coasts.
It is not, therefore, an attack by the animal on humans, but an accident due to involuntary contact and consequent reaction. Often, these creatures move on the surface and can be carried by currents, eventually coming close to people in the water. And although they appear far away, their long, thin tentacles can be close by, ready to release their venom at the slightest contact.
Let's see what really happens during a jellyfish sting.
