Chaining Sequences in VCV Rack
Вставка

- There's a lot of fun in combining different sequences into one long sequence, especially if this sequence is slightly changing and very organic. In this video, we will use sequential switches to chain a few sequences and create more complex sequences. This patch is also available in issue no.78 of SynMag - www.synmag.de/

Dear Omri, I just read about you in SynMag - looked at your videos and downloaded VCV - but your videos alone can make you HAPPY: may I call you the Bob Ross of electronic music??? - OH YEAH ;-) --- Thanks
Hey, that's great! Yeah, VCV is fun :) There's one probelm with the Bob Ross thing, I have literally no hairs on my head...
@@OmriCohen-Music outch :-) nevertheless happy knowing!
knobbing :-) ... not knowing!
@@OmriCohen-Music it's not abouth the hair, it's about the vibe!
just watching this again as I realise the mischief one can get up to with sequential switches... Outstanding work man, cheers!
Oh yeah, they're great!
I'm several hours into the VCV journey, thanks to your videos. I've made a little track along with some drums and its starting to sound pretty damn nice (thank you beginners luck). Now here I am to expand this musical embryo into several sequences with the help of this video.
You've told us so many times now that 10 octaves is too much, I found myself saying it at the same time as you. All jokes aside, don/t change a thing, its really helpful.
Thanks for all this dope content.
Hey, that's amazing! I'm really happy I can help :)
btw I really enjoyed the flow of this video, everthing was crystal clear and I had lots of fun seeing you add voices and things while being live. it is really enjoyable to see the voices being prepared then added to the mix.
Glad you enjoyed!
thank you very much for your in depth explanation of all the modules you use. i find that very rare and being an open source format, of course everyone has their own favorites. this really helps in terms of learning the quirks of the individual modules, and why you might chose the ones you have in the video for each patch.
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
You are seriously amazing. Thank you so much for all the help. I’m learning so much with each video. I’d go as far as to say I probably wouldn’t have gotten into VCV rack at all without finding your helpful stuff.
Hey, that's amazing, thanks so much!
You got some real Tangerine Dream vibe out there, I love it!
Cheers!
Too cool, this one made some more things click with me for sure. With both sequence chaining and polyphony. That is really neat how you can use one quantizer with polyphony to quantize different sequences. I always get so many ideas from your tutorials and just end up trying to make stuff when my goal is to do more tutorials and learn more 😆
Yeah man, there's so much to learn and to experiment with... Cheers!
Wow! I have watched many of your videos. They are all amazing but this one is my favorite so far. I love the way you explain every details without leaving anyone behind which gives the noobs like me a chance to catch up on the rest of the class. Thank you!
Hey, that's amazing, thank you!
Superb! Educational and inspiring.
Thanks so much!
This shouldn't be unlisted; amazing technique Omri
Thanks Ryan! Yeah, I'm waiting for the right moment to publish it. Out of curiosity, how did you find out about this video?
Ryan, it was unlisted probably because patreons get to see it first as a personal link.
An entire song in 20 minutes 🤯
Chaining sequences is fun :)
Man you inspire me
I'm really happy to hear that, thanks!
Amazing video and super helpful!!! Thank you so much 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Très intéressant, Omri Cohen 🙂
Thanks!
I have learnt so much from you. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Your nerveous system must have assimilated the randomize function of VCV Rack, so when you hit random it doesn't sound random at all. Great stuff Omri!
Random is life... Cheers, Lars!
Wow thank you!
Cheers!
hi Omri, I was successul in modulating my step lengths with voltages, the -1/+1 volt for /2 or *2 is understood.
Now I'd like to know if there is a method I can use to calculate the "total" clock division it takes to cover the whole sequence, because I find that time information useful to clock the sequencer switch, especially when I want to alternate between sequences of different lengths. I see you did the math by yourself at 3:15. But if I sequenced voltages to modulate my clock, it will be nice to just find the result automatically.
I'm also not sur how to patch the rests, but I feel the master reset should be located in the clock that pilots the switch, am I right?
There's also the problem of making sure each sequence of the switch will start at step 0.
Hi, well, I'm not so sure if there's a way to do this automatically. If there's an end of cycle output, then it's easier though.
And yes, there reset should come from the main clock you're using. Don't forget that it could be quite interesting to have things not sit exactly right so everything keeps on moving.
Another gem
Thanks so much :)
@@OmriCohen-Music oohhh yeah
Hey Omri, thanks for all your awesome videos. I am looking to chain two sequencers (steps), they both send an EOC trigger, what I wish to do is, i.e. have one sequence that is 8 steps and another that is 5 steps, and switch between them at their each EOC trigger… my problem is that I’d like to switch from one to the other, but if one is 3 steps and the other 8…. It retriggers itself before the other, can’t really figure out how to get around that… any tips?
Hi! That was a tricky one, but I got it :) You have to use a switch to switch between the clock for each sequencer. You send your clock to a 1-2 switch, and you combine the EOC from both sequencers to trigger this switch. That way, each EOC will clock the other sequencer once after 8 steps, and once after 5 steps. It's not so easy to explain it here, so feel free to email me, and I can send you an example patch :)
@@OmriCohen-Music Thanks Omri, I bumped you an email.
the reason of the clock subdivision remain obscure to me ( my dumbness..i know...) Do you know where i can find a basic information about this topic ?
What do you mean specifically? In which point of the video? I will try to help you
@@OmriCohen-Music I'm not very smart but I'm extremely stubborn and I managed to find the solution. It was all related to splitting the clocks to synchronize the clock that drives the sequencer with the clock that drives the sequential switch and how they work togheter. Thank you in any case for your availability and I take this opportunity to thank you for all the work you are doing and to advise anyone who reads to purchase your pdfs which are very precious for a neophyte. If they are understandable to me it means that they are understandable to anyone and clearly explained. Good work and thank you again 🙂
2:45 I already repeated that 5 times while doing the maths in my head ;)
:)
Been looking for this for quite a while, boastin!
Sweet!

This is an awesome video but a am very new. The Sequencer from vcv is different and I cannot map the same cabling for the first sequencer
Hi, managed to sort it out, I was being a plum. This so good; thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge
Hey, thanks! Yeah, a few things changed since VCV 2 but have a look here - omricohen.gumroad.com/l/vcv2fundamental?layout=profile
It's a free series of videos going through most of the changes.
Omri, I need a tutorial on how in the hell I sync sequencers to starting on the first step and not the second lol.
Hi! it will very much depend on the sequencers you use, but try using the CountModula Master Reset module. Maybe it can help :)
@@OmriCohen-Music Can do! will update with results!
Update, Cardinal does not have CountModula Modules. I might have to try and make something with the same functionality or find a suitable replacement.
@@OmriCohen-Music
Amazing!
Thank you!
