The magic system isn't confusing at all and is one of the highlights of the game for me. You forgot to mention that all of your known spells are recorded in a grimoire, and spells you don't currently have committed to memory can be cast from your grimoire with a longer casting time. So basically having spells memorized just lets you cast them faster. You can also switch out memorized spells during rests, although you don't get the other benefits of resting if you do. There's also the fact that you only start with 3 spells and you acquire new spells pretty slowly (you have to actually find them in game and try to learn them or have someone teach you) so you're not likely to exceed your limit for memorized spells for a long time unless you're playing a low Intelligence magic user. To be fair, it could have been explained better in the book, but once you understand it's actually quite simple.
And further, I think having preconceived notions about those other systems is a bigger cause of confusion than having nothing to compare it to. I've seen another youtuber get mad about the magic system because he assumed that one similarity to another system meant that it had other similarities that it actually didn't.

I love the push-rolls-mechanics. Pushing yourself for a negtaive consequence is a staple of Free League and I love it

I love quite a few things about Dragonbane. I love that the game is very easy to understand. The rules are really not all that complicated.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Roll Under system because it means that players immediately know if they succeed or not, and there's no need to do math or set up DCs.
I love that the "classes" are tied into the backgrounds and provides a lot of narrative load to characters.
I also like how easy it is to run.

The artwork shown in the video and most of the art in Dragonbane is done by Johan Egerkrans,, tho in the newest book the art in the book is done by David Brasgalla

oddly I LIKE that way of doing magic. The idea of how many spells you can "memorize" per day never sat well with me.

Actually i love the magic system. I never understand the D&D magical system. Why forget a spell after casting it? Is it a simulation of that old peoples offen have bad memory?🤔 😅

Runequest, Standard BRP, Call of Cthulhu, even Ruin Masters all have magic points and a casting roll. I don't really think Dragonbane is so different. Most settings that I am aware of limit to some degree the number of spell a character can can by Int. I think that D&D and OSR is the odd one out here.

Well, the original Dragonbane was based on Runequest, apparently, and Runequest was the source of BRP. And the video is meant to be a comparison of Dragonbane and DnD.

Agreed. I think the magic system is better than DnD's, as it flavours magic items (willpower point batteries). Fewer spells is also a plus.

Honestly I love the character progression. I like that you have classes but are free to advance skills and use items as needed and that "leveling up" does not freely give you a certain amount of HP and new spells. Progression in DB just feels more natural and organic. My minor gripe with it though is that I do not get why crit fails let you get a level up point. It kind of feels weird and the only reason I can think of is "Wow! I messed up so bad I can only get better from here."

It's like trying to do something and making mistakes to the point of learning. We often learn to do the right thing and improve after making mistakes. In this specific case, you made such a big mistake (a demon) that you can learn and improve (you still can fail the skill roll though).

Really great game and I’m excited to see more content for it. I expect the new campaign to be fantastic. I would definitely like more heroic abilities though.

I dont like how you "level up" in dragon bane.
You just roll dice and if you are lucky you get better if not you stay the same.
Which is kinda frustrating since dragonsbane really likes to kill you and you sometimes feel as weak as when you started

Both 5e and Dragonbane have really bad magic systems.
I agree that is a weak point for Dragonbone, the few and poor spells, and especially that many spells won't work on "monsters", so lots of willpower points will go out the window trying to find out, what you are dealing with.
