Madman drops nearly a 3hr Chrono Trigger video a few weeks ago and immediately is back on the grind. A lesser UA-camr would have gone into hibernation mode. Keep on keeping on.
Past Jason was absolutely GOATed as an editor on VHS tapes, that must have taken months of work and at least some exotic equipment! Also, amazing to have a YT-video with a VHS-gimmick that doesn't completely overdo it with filters and effects that would only ever appear if you let your dog eat the tape and then re-spool it after digestion.
Bro Shining Force 3 is one of the best games ever made. Technically its 3 games but still. If you think shining force 1 and 2 and CD are good, then wait until you play through all 3 scenerios of SF3. The story is amazing and the world is vast, theres alot of stuff to explore, alot of secret stuff to find. It trully is the peak of Shining Force and maybe the peak of SRPGs in my opinion.
Fun Fact: you can discard the protect rings in the first battle and then buy them back in the deals section of the weapon/item shop. I remember Slade being broken with his boost spell, so he shouldn't be in sucked/personal opinion.
Having played this game, and all of them ,when they first came out and then replaying them all last year I did enjoy them all in different ways. Actually did the hidden 4th chapter for Shining Force CD as well. If you are playing for story though remember that it starts with Shining in the Darkness, then it's Shining Force, then SF CD,then SF 2. Then it goes into Shining Wisdom, which I have, but it's not totally important. However if you plan on playing Shining Force 3 keep in mind that Shining the Holy Ark comes first. Characters and the villains are in Shining Force 3 which deals with the fight with the third Demon Lord having beaten the first two in the other games. So if you can play that first. Also it's a game that Majuular reviewed and really loved along with Shining Force 3. And of course Shining Force 3 is split up into 3 games which means you will need the translations of those games as well as a cart that lets you play them if you are using an actual Saturn which I have been using for my playthrough.
Bucket list. I beat 1 &2 last year, and 3 this year. I'm working on CD now. I hope it has 2 promo levels like SF2 does. I was disappointed that 3 didn't have that.
I loved replaying the 1st and 2nd game once I figured out how to configure my dinosaur computer to make a Sega CD emulator work. The 3rd chapter was just a wonderful new treat. 😁 The all bosses one I only tried once before the dinosaur stopped reading any keyboards. I found out later that you can find "super units" that basically heal and crush everything, like angels or something.
Karna from Shining Force 2 is actually the best character in the game. She has a buff ability that you can keep spamming to give her lots of exp, and you can get her to an insane level with a little grinding.
"The feeling of needing to complete something is often described as a sense of "closure" or "completion motivation," where the brain releases dopamine, a "feel-good" chemical, upon finishing a task, creating a positive reinforcement loop that drives the desire to see things through to the end; it can also be related to the psychological concept of the "Zeigarnik effect" where unfinished tasks tend to linger in our thoughts, making us want to complete them. "
All you have to do to reorganize your troops & choose who you want in a battle is to simply cast Egress! That will send you to your camp to regroup & is essentially a Restart button for the current battle, only you get to keep any gear or Exp you got up to when you used Egress! It's a nice way to grind actually, as you can just kill everything besides 1 enemy, Egress, & then do the whole thing over again.
Oh, no. You put up your character tier list and I don't remember ANYONE. I only played this like three years ago. Guess it didn't leave much of an impression. Too bad. I really was excited to play this one, since I didn't get to as a kid.
It was a game gear release so it was expected to be light weight. Yet, I wish someone with enaugh love for the arts would've decided to add some level of exploration, puzzles and overworld map to the CD release. I bet some fans will make SFCD the game it deserved to be.
Freeze 3 was the only spell that had a Glitched damage value in the GG version. The other spells do the damage they're supposed to. The way you said it made it sound like ALL magic was buffed in the GG games which isn't the case. And it was actually a Glitch that caused the increased damage value for Freeze 3.
That book 4 boss rush is hard as balls. I had to replay all 3 books using the specific characters that they give you in 4 to beat it and even then I had cheese the mp recovery on the healer's staff to get through. Shining Force CD is more of a great thing with challenge. Great review Graves!
The game gives you a solution to this. Just replay book 3. The first battle has 2 zombies that spawn infinitely, and give enough exp to you to 20/20. So even if hadn’t previously used a character, you could level them in that battle.
WOAH!!!!! WOW I’ve always wondered if recording gameplay footage with a VCR and then converting it to modern formats would help preserve the original look of these games and my god what a fantastic result? I think? Is that what you did? Is this look only temporary to fit with the time travel theme? I hope you stick with it! Is this really captured from actual hardware? If so is it RBG or composite? I don’t see much rainbowing so if it is a genuine composite signal it looks pretty clean.
08:28 freeze 3 in the OG game gear was INSANELY powerful. Death Woldol became the hardest fight in the game gear Sword of Hajya by a long shot purely because of his use of that spell.
Jason, guy, as someone whose first RPG was SF1 and for whom SF2 was the most amazing discovery until they found out about SF3... argh..... in 1999 it was tragic to learn that SF3 was never to leave Japan. It was amazing to see dedicated fans release patches and perfect emulators for the West to eventually realize what was previously thought to be impossible... anyways, just grace us with your obnoxious opinion about it already, eh?
Wow I was never able to get through book one of SF CD. I did play book 2 many times because I had it on game gear as a kid. Also played final conflict when the english patch released. I had no idea book 3 of cd was so good. It really does seem worth slogging through book one and two.
I had a Sega CD. I liked RPGs. Why did I never see games like this or know they existed. My CD games were all crappy FMV. I had one polygon looking space shooter that felt like driving on an air hockey table that was ok. Even for the Genesis. All I had were badly designed platformers.
They weren't advertised that well. I discovered some of the cooler Sega CD games when I was in a used game shop trying out Sega CD games and the girl just suddenly says "hey do you like RPGs?" I say "yeah" and she pops in Lunar, which I'd never heard of before that. I bought that immediately after seeing the opening cutscenes. My friends were not that crazy about the Sega CD but thought it was a neat novelty, but now... now I had a Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star level RPG on a platform they didn't have access too... whoa baby, now I had something cool. I bought anything Working Designs after that, and got my hands on Snatcher and Dark Wizard, and Shining Force CD.... the Sega CD had some cool shit if you knew about it. Even as a Sega CD owner it wasn't that easy to know about it though...
Man...now i know why they made controllers have more buttons. All those menus and choices im sure was amazing back in the day, but I would have still gotten frustrated, personally lol
1. The CD music rules. 2. The 3rd Campaign rules, and offers almost the only tactical challenge of any kind up to that point in the series. It's still not that tough, but at least it makes you think a tiny bit unlike other existing SF games at the time. SF1, 2, and the SF gaidens were more baby JRPGs than anything else. Yes they were charming, but extremely easy. 3. Now that I've watched the review, I'm glad to see you agree.
i think shineing force being to easy is a good thing. it's meant to be an entry point to the genere like dragon quest is to jrpgs. gget yyour feet wet before jumping into the mroe hard core stuff like tatics ogre, final fnatasy tatics of even fire emblem. only arc the lad comes close to shineing foce in that regard.
There is an "auto-battle" type feature in Shining Force II as one of the optional features you can enable via the cheat menu. I habitually enter this code every time I launch the game to turn on Turbo Mode because I'm not the most patient person waiting for enemy actions and dialogue boxes. I am not sure why the option is hidden in a cheat menu since it doesn't fundamentally affect the game difficulty it just allows for accelerated game play.
The best shining force games are probably fan mods. Shining Force alternate comes to mind. I've played a bunch. Head on over to shining force mods. War of the Gods pretty good too
Shining force remastered on GBA is best imo. Steam armor armadillo, adorable baby dragon, werewolf and old guy who kicks butt in a flying machine. Best cast by far
Dark Wizard may be worth looking at for Sega CD tactical RPGs. The presentation is a fair bit drier than Shining Force, though it's got the same spirit and a fair bit more depth
That game doesnt have the level of graphics and animation and presentation that Shining Force does. Its like a cheap, low budget version of it. I remembering renting it and hating it.
Hurts my heart hearing you say 'F*ck the Game Gear games... Clearly you're too young to have appreciated them. At the time that they came out they were AMAZING!! Worth noting that Book 2 in this game is significantly better than Book 1! Book 2 is based off the game most lovers of the series know, aka Shining Force Sword of Hajya, as it was the only Game Gear Shining Force game we got in America. Book 1 is based off a Japan only Shining Force game & this was the first time it could be experienced in English, which was kinda nice. Still, it's simply not as good as Sword of Hajya aka Book 2 of this game.
No doubt that GG Shining Force game was amazing, I remember there was a code you put in at the start of the game and you could rename all of your characters. I'd spend at least an hour just doing this😂
I really don't get why they haven't. I don't know anyone that doesn't like these games, and nobody seems to like the other Shining games that much, but there's 90000 of them.
@anonamatron i remember not liking the shift in art style, but maybe i was just being a snob, ill try to look at where it changed in early 2000s, maybe some of those are good. EDIT: one interesting game to look at is Shining Holy Ark' We know that Camelot is the developer behind Golden Sun and the Shining series, as early as Shining Holy Ark' you can actually see the art style and UI layout that would be used to much success in Golden Sun 1 and 2. If you think about it, the character designs are not too far of a cry off from OG Shining Force. Not sure why but ive always gotten a C.S. Lewis or Tolkien-by way of Japan vibe from the early games.
@ I've played a bit of Shining in the Darkness on Genesis. A dungeon crawler. Not bad. I think one of the Saturn games is like that? your a really underrated creator
he is very good and everyone should show their friends
This would be the biggest channel on UA-cam... if he would get a haircut!
*You're
If keeps creating content he will become UA-cam king
Yeah, he’s really good. Always look forward to the next vid
Madman drops nearly a 3hr Chrono Trigger video a few weeks ago and immediately is back on the grind. A lesser UA-camr would have gone into hibernation mode. Keep on keeping on.
I enjoy the fun skits you add in to break up the review. I've never played this series so it was a fun way to dip a toe. Great job Jason!
Past Jason was absolutely GOATed as an editor on VHS tapes, that must have taken months of work and at least some exotic equipment!

RIP Future Jason.
The CRT footage is pure chef's kiss.
Feels like I'm transported back to late 90s

Now, at 2am I have to watch this. Hopefully its not phoned in.
New Jason Graves video. Today is truly a good day.
Now you can donate it to John Hancocks gaming museum
Respect that you’re giving Shining Force the love it deserves.
I think it is way better than Fire Emblem
You are publishing at 0100 CST? You are pure chaos.
My thought exactly, if I hadn't woken up randomly and then couldn't get back to sleep I would have missed it until the morning!
Fun Fact: you can discard the protect rings in the first battle and then buy them back in the deals section of the weapon/item shop.

Woah, it's THE Jason Graves!
Played book 1 last summer. I think I accidentally deleted the save, so now I gotta grind through that again to reach book 3.
I like your content. Please keep it up!
Old school delivery. Nice yes.
I loved replaying the 1st and 2nd game once I figured out how to configure my dinosaur computer to make a Sega CD emulator work. What a good video; it’s a shame we’ll never know who made it, would have liked to see more from them

CD is fantastic, I am a die hard 2 fan and struggled to get into 3. But CD is just the little more Shining Force that I need some times.

The way I regularly played the series all the way back in the first shinning force game and into every sequel.
So if past jason from the '90s looks like present jason... does that mean he's an ageless vampires.
I love your stuff Jason, and have since the beginning. Now, where is the Shining in the Darkness review?
Oh, no. You put up your character tier list and I don't remember ANYONE. I only played this like three years ago. Guess it didn't leave much of an impression. Too bad. I really was excited to play this one, since I didn't get to as a kid.

@WandererFromYs what's your favorite version of ys3?
That final battle in the Museum is Book 4.
I was curious as to why you didn't mention it in the beginning, still a good game.
Thanks to Red Cow for introducing me to your content.

No shirtless this time, that's what happens when you create a time paradox 😞 guys we need to go back, back to the future

When are you going to do Lunar saga?
20:40 "the penultimate battle is pure kino" Ayla's friend in chrono trigger? What do you mean by that?
Twitter lingo I think, it's a reference to the phrase "absolute kinography" by a Russian filmmaker, so it's like saying something it's cinema
Okay apparently I need to play this. I love the first two games.
I had a Sega CD. I liked RPGs. Why did I never see games like this or know they existed. My CD games were all crappy FMV. I had one polygon looking space shooter that felt like driving on an air hockey table that was ok. Even for the Genesis. All I had were badly designed platformers.

i personally like shining force 3 game gear because it bridges the gap between the genesis SF1 and 2
Man...now i know why they made controllers have more buttons. All those menus and choices im sure was amazing back in the day, but I would have still gotten frustrated, personally lol
The final battle in Book 1 was.....as James Rolfe would say....... "a f***ing Scorpion".
Im surprised the gba remake usually gets ignored. It's possibly my favorite game. Still haven't played SF 3 yet. Perhaps Sega will port it by 2050.
Well I've never played shining force but now I want to
Oh my god, I always wanted play this!
Jason, you're my favorite youtube person these days!
That was a pretty fucking sweet spreadsheet.
23:00 Funny you mention the mages. I remember playing this game for the first time recently and deciding that magic was worthless.
That was Frank's cartridge you were talking to his parents
Who am I supposed to trust or not trust???????????????????????? I'm completely lost now

Jason now in glorious 240p (with scanlines)
wait if future Jason is gone... than where is Past Jason??? 🤔
Sooo,….which carrier are you using for that Chrono Trigger?
i think shineing force being to easy is a good thing. it's meant to be an entry point to the genere like dragon quest is to jrpgs.

Great game and the music rules hard
I played this on my modded 2DS XL , it runs good.
Isn't hard mode's A.I better than super hard?
What's with the middle of the night upload?
i did not make it rough book 3, but it was a fun try!
My main complaint with this game is the repetitive music.
Dark Wizard may be worth looking at for Sega CD tactical RPGs. The presentation is a fair bit drier than Shining Force, though it's got the same spirit and a fair bit more depth

My girlfriend got me this game for christmas this year.
I sure hope this isn't phoned in
even phoned in it was still a good video.
I never did beat the SCD Shining Force. I think the last time I played it was when I rented it from Blockbuster.
That back to the future ending !
Worth noting that Book 2 in this game is significantly better than Book 1! Book 2 is based off the game most lovers of the series know, aka Shining Force Sword of Hajya, as it was the only Game Gear Shining Force game we got in America.

22:53 I cried
I came
@@JEANS__ Me too
So telling your parents about you led to your death? That's dark.
This review had my rolling before the actual review even started. Great stuff!
Big Jason fan btw
GREAT VIDEO!!!!!
Shining forces was sooo good.
Should have put on a terrible fake moustache and been your dad in 1994!
This channel has certainly endured and evolved over time and I appreciate the journey and where it has led us.
I played book 1 and 2, but wasn't liking it, so didn't bother to play book 3. Maybe some day, I'll give it another chance, lol.
You posted at 3 AM EST and still pulled almost 1k views in 2.5 hours. Not bad!
I couldn't stop laughing when you refered to your bench as Jobbers. Love the wrestling reference.
You weren’t born yet in 1994? What, how is your hair that excellent?
All this time travel is going to mess up your multiverse and haave you run into avgn
You’re awesome dude, love your vids. Keep up the great work 👊
If you got a og copy you can send it to me I'll review it for you
I love seeing these games hit a younger generation. Keep it up, man. Your channel is special.
I love your content Jason. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Fantastic video Jason.
WHAT THE HELL DID THEY DO TO MY BOY DOMINGO!!?
This IS NOT good old Domingo. Domingo from SF1 is an utter BEAST. One of the highest defensive values in the entire game. He is the Peter of SF1.
No joke, Domingo is capable of soloing most of chapters 6 thru 8. Most enemies are only able to do 1HP of damage, even with spells.
This frail blob smacks of Gunther, not Domingo
I'm early. cool
Shining Force 3 is awesome
