I think braiding your own hair (knotless) is actually better if you have your own hair braided and not use weave. I think its the chemicals in the hair weave (synthetic) has chemicals in it and I actually think this is what causes more than usual shedding. Also, you need a good pre poo, or a product like Taliyah Wajid to place on the new growth and allow to sit on the hair before actually gently combing.

I've read many articles that synthetic braiding hair cuts into your hair shafts and cause damage. Don't leave hair braided more than 4 to 6 weeks if using it. Keep it moisturized and clean. Most will not shampoo their braids if left in for long periods for fear of frizzing. But, what's more important, the cosmetic look or healthy hair? Best thing if possible is to braid or twist your own hair. If not use human hair. It's more expensive but not damaging to your strands.

Shedding can be normal. It also can be excessive. Protective styles like braids are heavy and weaken the hair strands and scalp. When you take down, some of the natural shed hairs tangle and pull the regular (anagen phase) hairs. It looks like you’re shedding a normal amount. But not all types of hair handles braids well and sheds well.
When taking braids down, the best way is honestly to grease up hair and scalp and wait before detangling and washing. At least 12-24 hours. Get your hair strong again and then wash and all that. You may also shed way way less.

Everyone isn't as privileged as you & not having fake hair isn't a flex. You could have a health problem at any point. People don't only wear these things for vanity. The presumption of that, is very self exalting. Protective means different things to different people @#Don't judge!

    • @hereforit2347
      @hereforit2347 11 місяців тому +7

@@AB-ib3nf: You’re jumping to conclusions. I’m not flexing *or* judging. I’m talking about terminology.
People only think of added hair when they talk about “protective styles”. And a lot of people are now saying “protective styles aren’t always protective”, because lace fronts, feed-in braids, faux locs, sew-ins, etc., can sometimes cause thinning, hair loss, or traction alopecia. At the same time, many people (Cardi B, Angela Simmons, etc.) experience increased length retention because of wearing wigs and added hair.
But given that there are other protective styles and other ways to protect the hair over extended periods that *don’t* require added hair and that are less likely to cause damage to the hair follicles, there should be alternate terminology to illustrate the distinction between the two so people can know exactly what a person means when they say “protective style”.
I refer to styles using added hair as “protective styles”, and I refer to hairdos that don’t require added hair, yet also help minimize damage, as “preventative styles”.
The same problem exists with the term “co-wash”. To most people, it means “washing” your hair with conditioner. Well, conditioner does not and cannot “wash” hair because it contains no surfactants. On the other hand, you have co-wash products that *are* cleansers and *can* wash the hair, but most people don’t think of those when they use or hear the term “co-wash”.
To distinguish between them, I, personally, use the term “co-wash” when referring to using an actual co-wash product, and “co-rinse” when it comes to “washing” hair with conditioner.

@@gloriamensah8900: Crown braids and twists or any plaited, corn rowed, twisted, or flat-twisted styles, especially those that allow you to pin up the the length of your hair.
Of course, these styles normally don’t last as long as long as styles incorporating added hair. The trick is making them last at least 3-5 days. Some, of course, can last a couple of weeks. Some you can do yourself and others may require a skilled professional. It’s also important to make sure as little tension as possible is put on your follicles, i.e., they should never pull or cause pain.
For me, wearing my hair In several plaits under a well-styled head wrap is also an option. In 2022, I purchased my first wig. It has bangs and doesn’t require glue. I just have to pull it on. That falls under the “protective style” umbrella, but it’s damage-free.
Some people like to stretch their hair by blow drying before before styling. I don’t because I try to use heat as sparingly as possible.

You are totally correct! Moisturize and oil... even if you have a protective style...

Additional tip for protective styles, don't let it be too tight on the scalp

You hair shed 80 strands a day, you figure you had your had braided for a month, of course all the shed hair will come out. You grow 6 inches of hair a year, protective styles help you not manipulate you hair so much and protect your ends

They are you just need to take care of your hair and scalp during the time you have your protective hairstyle. Your hair will shred even if you don’t have a protective hairstyle. The right products matter too for your “hair type”.

Meanwhile, here I am with my knotless braids for two months 😂 I am trying to go three months, and see how much my hair has grown. Especially since it costs so much.

Yea! Wild growth is best! I did a year with getting braids every month! Omg! And I take really good care of my hair! SMH! My hair was thin and I had to cut so much off… it did nothing! If I get knotless again…. I’m only getting 10! I’m never doing mediums or smalls again! Never!
