I'm starting a new veneered commission. I guess it's time to dust off the bag press and remember how to veneer...

I feel when you take a project that pushes you out of your comfort zone, it's usually harder to get started. We don't want to mess up or fail the client, but pushing beyond this mental wall allows for outstanding growth. Thank you for sharing and being transparent in your process, it's nice to see even the pros are human lol
I don’t know if I missed something, but what do you use to be able to iron on the edge banding?
I’m interested in the answer also. Did you put glue on the strip, let it dry, then iron it on?
A man after my own heart; I will sometimes prototype an entire version of a thing to work out kinks. I'm doing choir music stands for where my wife sings, and I left them a prototype for about a month to play with, got some great feedback, and went with some fairly radical changes for the final product, resulting in a much better - and more watchable, luckily - design. Sometimes you just need to see, touch, and hold a thing to make sure you've gotten it right. Well done, sir.
I love when you drop a video Erik, it lifts my day. For someone who says he doesn’t do much veneering you’ve done a terrific job. Thanks for the video.👍👍
thank you EN. young man we all get hit with work salad it happens dont worry it get worse at my age ( old geezer ).
Work salad? This project blockage has a name?! Cool
How do stop the glue (especially Titebond) bleeding through the veneer under clamping (or vacuum) pressure? You mentioned you suspected there was something the cold press glue to avoid it, but keen to know how you managed it with ordinary glue. It's been the curse of my larger veneering projects.
Interesting and helpful, as always. I really appreciate you showing all the test work. Test, refine, execute - I tell my trainees this all the time (different profession for me, but same general process).
Amaizing! Can't wait to see the finished product!
Looks to me like the experiments you ran allowed you the confidence to get started. Proving - to yourself - that you can get the veneer onto flat and rounded surfaces demonstrated that you have all of the technologies and techniques you need for this project under adequate control. Wish I could say the same about my next big project...
I think everyone at some point or another procrastinates and puts off starting a job / task. Like you say, the best way is to just make a start or at least start the proper planning and prep. It's not until I actually start do I find out the issues and the solutions. Make sense?
I'll be interested to see the end product. Another enjoyable video Eric!
Nice! You make it look simple in way that inspires me to try veneering.
So why did gorilla glue failed……………………….? 🤔
13:00 but here’s the thing, I feel like you didn’t really cover the glue adequately. Yes, at 9:32 you say some words, but you’re holding up a bottle of Titebond Extend there which has a longer open time compared to regular Titebond. You can get each of Titebond 1, 2, or 3 in the “Extend” or “Normal” depending on how much time you need to work before the glue starts to set-up
The word plinth is not used nearly enough. Kudos.
Thanks Eric. Take care & stay safe.
Where did you get your bag press kit?
I use that sweet, syrupy Gorilla Glue for veneers and laminations quite often. A significant step that cannot be missed is to spray or gently wipe down your non-glued surface with water. Moisture is required to get the glue to properly activate and 'foam up'.
Yikes
I have also used gorilla glue for veneer. I spread the glue on the veneer and lightly spray water on the substrate. It works great. Paul Schurch uses this method.
If your headline is actually true, then you are a politician
Thanks Erik!
I just want to be sure that I understand. Did you leave the veneer oversized so that you could wrap the excess over the edge? If so, did you do something to the edge of the plywood to keep any imperfections on the edge from showing through the veneer? I haven’t yet tried veneering but this is very interesting to me.
I e never done it but I think you could laminate a bunch of your veneer together with epoxy to get like a 3/8 or 1/2 band that could accommodate a mild curve. I imagine the result would appear quartersawn almost as the profile cut through the layers.
Hey when your down in Florida, hit me up. I'll fill that coffee cup for you. 😅
0:21 So… 😂 (REMIX… 😅)
Liquid hide glue !
Any possibility that your *bubbling* issue could have been avoided by using a veneer relaxer?
What is veneer relaxer?
