  • Want to build a platform? Why not just add Backstage or any other portal on top of your setup and call it a day? The reality is portals are (useful) interfaces to your platform. They are NOT your platform. In this talk, Kaspar discussed how portals like Backstage are complemented by platform backends (Platform Orchestrators) to ship an Internal Developer Platform that’s ready for primetime.
When building your Internal Developer Platform (IDP), it’s crucial you start with the backend and later go up to higher layers like portals. The backend is where your core logic resides and what makes your platform engineering initiative truly enterprise-level. In this talk, Kaspar explained how you can combine open-source platform interfaces like Score and Backstage with a Platform Orchestrator like Humanitec.
During this session, you can learn:
How to combine Backstage and Humanitec in a platform your developers will actually love
How to use IDP reference architectures as blueprints for the enterprise
A demo of the developer experience in a fully-fledged platform

Good video and discussion. I don’t understand the need to create a new format. Why not use terraform and use a custom provider. That would lessen the learning curve and reduce the number of components in the tool chain. This also assumes all required components are available for developers. That’s very unlikely and a way for teams to contribute back to this library is required. Introducing a new tool is very similar to the Netflix problem. You have to convince them it’s worth doing. My experience (and yours) is that’s not a very likely path to success.
