How do you thread a sewing machine with a fur? How do you sew sheepskin? How do you sew a hide? You will find pro answers to these questions in this video and in the articles of our website.
This video describes sewing technique for whipstitch, cup feed fur sewing machines.
The fur sewing machine sews medium to heavy weight furs, sheepskin and suede.
The principle of working fur sewing machine involves sewing a chain stitch using a one thread. The thread from coil is inserted into a needle eye. A looper grabs a needle thread to make a chain stitch. The cover stitch goes along stacked furs skin edges.
Any fur sewing machine has two feed discs (analog of a flat feed dog and a presser foot). To install two furs skins between these discs, you need move the front disc towards you.
Mesmerizing… I could watch that machine run all day. So amazing the way it picks up the thread to lock the stitch! I could bang out a few ‘Ugg’s’ with this baby! Lol!
Thank you
I just bought a machine. Now I'm learning how to sew fur. I bought the machine from a very straight up guy in Montreal.
The most important skill is to keep the seam in the same position. If the edges to be sewn are higher than normal position, sewing needle will bend. I advise you to immediately buy a pack of needles.
I have many. I order from Montreal. Get in about 3 days
@@mcgreggg I have been looking for a machine, any you care to share is appreciated.
@@mcgreggg so ? What about that machine ? Does it make the job ? Do you recommend the same modal ? Where did you buy it in Montreal ? Im from there too. Thanks for your time.
@@mcgreggg I just got a triple F from someone that used to work in the industry in montreal in the late 80ies early 90ies back when I was as well. I had 2F machine back then myself it was a good all around machine. The triple F was more for very fine work like female mink. I knew that the higher the F rating was the finer the seam but their other video explained more precisely w when they explained the clearance of the looper arm
I have an old singer like this and it works beautiful. Mine has a cutting blade that trims an even line just before it's stitched, Like my surger.
It is very convenient to have such a function, you are lucky to have such a machine and a surgeon too
Wow that's awesome! Great job. U make it look so easy!
Thank you so much for this video and your website with more info on using these machines!
Thank you
I used to do that for a living we used to use our thumb to push the fleece down.
You are a pro, but we cannot give such advice to amateurs, they will certainly hurt your finger.
@@sewway true I never thought about that. Where I worked we used to make ugg boots and car seat covers, loved the job
OK
yes ...we pulled the flanks towards the end of the slices also it prevents the seam from showing and gives the fur a more full look... I just aqcuired a machine today 25 years later :)... just cleaning it up and getting it ready
This is really cool! Thanks for making the video
Thanks
I know this is an old video, What model machine is that. I have a never stop A model and am looking for something with more bite for sewing beaver and heavier furs.
Way cool ! Thank you
Thank you
May I ask what this machine does better than simply seaming with a lockstitch machine, then trimming the extra off after sewing? I know that adds an extra step, but "so you don't buy a machine you don't need" kinda thinking here. I can see that poking the fur out so it's not caught in the seam is important, but figured I'd ask "why is this machine necessary" more specifically. Overlock machines seem to perform almost the same operation, no?
No not like this. This machine is only needed by those who work with fur products. No other machine can sew fur skins.
Thank you for the great video! I have recently been given a machine like this, but antique (it's a singer 46K45 to be exact). Would you have any idea what it might be worth? I have all the parts, table and gasoline driven motor included. It would be so helpful to find some answers to what it might be worth!
75 euro
Nice would love to do that
My husband and I are looking for a machine like this (vintage is best!). Does anyone know where we can find one? His family are hunters and we would like to make items with the skins we have collected.
I have this king size very old Vicuña blanket and I want to have a backing probably wool material. I'd like to do it myself but I don't have a machine like this only a regular sewing machine. If I do it inside out could I use a blanket stitch for the edges between the wool and the leather? Or it would be better to shave a half inch edge since it's so large and in that way to have a regular stitch all around? Thank you in advance for your time and I surely enjoy your videos!!
Yes, of course you can, just choose thick threads and a needle.
Hi Sewway, is a machine like this suitable for heavy thickness faux fur as well or is it only suitable for natural hides?
What type of thread are you using specifically ?
Regular polyester thread
Joss..
I need one of these :D
I just got one today :)

hello thank you for this video, can you tell me which quality of threads to use, I have tried with different threads but they break
You can use different threads. If the threads are breaking, the tension may be too high.
Maybe jeans thread
could be the tension but it could also be the tension disks if they are steel you might want to check them for grooves the thread eventually wears grooves into them. ceramic disks pretty much eliminate this problem. you can also rotate them to a less worn area that might help
One step up from polyester is bonded nylon, depending on the machine and needle I use Z69 but depending on the project you could probably get away with Z46
Why did you hammer the stitching?
To make the seam elastic
@@sewway Thank you! Making one of my own and didn’t quite understand that part
what size needles do you use?
90 (14) industrial sewing machines needle
@@sewway thank you! :)
Why is my needle bending when I try to stitch even a light leather?
Your seam allowance is too wide, try do it small in half
