I am not American and I don't live in America. But I agree that America is a great country and has always been. Therefore I have never understood why Donald Trump said "Make America great again" : the word that makes this sentence wrong is "again".

Trump and his followers said "again" exactly because they oppose the political changes that have come about since the vote extended beyond rich white men. In 1776 only white men who owned land could vote. (I do not know the year when land ownership was no longer a requirement; but nobody poor could vote with such a law in place.)
What is great about the US is that the Constitution gives the people means to change the Constitution itself, as happened when FDR was elected in 1933.
@@brynawaldman5790 So, you want to say that Trump didn't mean "again" in the sense of "to come back to greatness after meanwhile being not great for a while", but in the sense of "to repeat the process to become great, but on another field", right? Thus, "again" here means to repeat, not to recover?
As someone from China, a less extreme version of NK, I would say culture shock in the US is: food portion size (I get to eat a lot of protein), indoor temperature regulation (sometimes the AC is even too cool in the summer), kitchen island/peninsula (makes me feel like royalty), and mental health awareness (in where I come from, people usually don't go to therapy, they beat children instead).
I do see that, people can be unhappy in any country in any income bracket. Just because people in rich countries have it better than people in poorer countries does not make their suffering invalid. There are people who got physical or sexual abused by their parents and that cause very hard wound to heal.
I think many Americans are quite patriotic indeed dispute having many complaints. Only when you are allowed to complain can you love your country.

Well, I just saw a video with a Korean man in Seoul making a stunt: "I am a North Korean defector please give me a hug" he gathered more than 3.000.000 likes on UA-cam which is almost more than Kim Jung Un shok in a normal day.

Every country is better than North Korea but that doesn’t mean the USA is a great country. As a matter of fact it is a terrible country. One of the worst in human history. Sure North Korea treats their own citizens terrible but let’s talk about the wars the USA started. I am sure that in a headcount the USA has caused way more death of innocent people. I am for example from the Netherlands and we have a social democracy. We actually care about human life’ and not those made present lies about “freedom” the USA feeds their children at school…

Even hotels with in room saunas hot tubs swimming pools waterfalls vibrating in beds or totally furnished in stock the refrigerators. Even having your home built underwater. Edible panties.
The abundance in North American supermarkets was awesome to an immigrant from Britain in the 1970s.

Thank you for sharing your experiences! I was born in a developing country and immigrated to Australia with my family when I was 3. When I was 24 I travelled around Latin America and visited my homeland of Uruguay. There was a lot of beautiful things I got to see in my travels but when I came back home to Australia I wanted to kiss the ground! Our standard of living is so comfortable and convenient, things like having hot water and regular electricity. I didn't appreciate how good we have it until I saw how other people lived.

Thank you so much Yeonmi, this was wonderful. I grew up during the 1950's. Believe me when I say, I felt very privileged and happy I was living in Oregon on a small farm here in America. I knew the horrors of how people in other countries lived. My family had recently, "when I was small", left Arkansas and a depression stricken Ozark Mountain village dirt poor. Yes our house was one room with the kitchen set by itself off one end. 8 children and two adults. My oldest brother just passed away at 91 years of age. He left at 19 this Ozark haven. I could tell you some stories but will refrain. We have fared well and a sister and I are all that are left with 25 grandchildren living all over.

I've been unemployed for eight months, and while I very much appreciate everything I have, the constant rejection is beginning to have an impact. Your video really drives home the point of just how blessed I truly am. Thanks very much for your perspective! The thing is - I don't even *have* to go back to work - I have enough saved now to retire. So at least until I do find work again, I'll find joy in taking a shower every day! And having different rooms to go to! :)

My grandmother and her family in world War 2, at the beginning, were in lithuania. When the soviets annexed it she said imeadiate effects her neighbors were dispaced and the red army soliders patrolled the streets. It was so bad that when the nazis invaded they celebrated it.

When I was stationed in South Korea 1979 - 1980, I never saw a dog walking around. It was kaegogi where they were butchered and hanging in the store window. When it's a matter of survival, you do what you got to do in order to survive.

haha, a homeless person in the U.S. may have the right to get a passport and get on a airplane, but they will not have the means to do so. Homeless people do not tend to have much money. There are a lot of different economic situations in the U.S, it is a very big country. Hopefully none as poor as North Korea but there are some people in the U.S. that don't have much and struggle.

Yes. And in America there's lots and lots of food but you can barely call that GMO abomination food. And the organic stuff is so expensive most Americans can't afford it, so they get the unhealthy cheap stuff, get sick and the medical care in the US is even more unaffordable to most people, so they get in huge debts just to get things they need to survive. If the debt is too big, they lose everything, but hey, at least they still have a passport to go see the world 🥴 The reason I'm glad living in the EU is because it protects us from Monsanto and Americans forcing their GMO stuff down our thorats. No offense, tho.
Most of the homeless people in the U.S. choose to be that way.
The liberals kicked many of them out of government institutions decades ago and most of the rest somehow get plenty of money for their drugs.
I was homeless on and off for 4 years. Please don't use my situation to bolster your false views that the US is somehow, in some way, as bad as North Korea. In America, I was able to rise out of and overcome my adverse situation. In a communist country, I would not have had that opportunity.

There are many impoverished people living in Canada and the US, in Canada homelessness is a huge thing, the Indigenous and Inuit on Reservations living in poverty, food insecurity due to high food costs in the Northern regions of Canada.
The US homelessness, just look at Appalachia.
None of this compares to NK but people suffer here as well
People suffer everywhere. But in America the people who suffer the most suffer far less than those on oppressed nations
A lot of homeless are not lazy or drug users. Getting a passprot requires money and a home address.. Seeing the world requires money... I am happy that your life is great now. But working with homeless people has shown me that not everyone is the same.
Well if they would get off their asses,and get a job, or go to treatment...they could get a passport and travel,or maybe not be homeless.
@@richunggoy3960 most of the homeless are those mental illness that has no one to take care of them or no where to go, another large part of the homeless are addicts maybe a handful of those who are just extremely unlucky or made bad decisions. Treating everyone the same just because they don't have what you have is exactly what's wrong with the average American and why they believe every American has the exact same opportunities or every American as this level of equality or freedom. Yes we are free in this country Yes we are privileged just for being an American but this country is not perfect and And everything is not equal to believe so is pure ignorance.
The mantra in the NK camps that read 'hard work will set you free' is a lie, and remains such in the US. Its the irony of how she relates to our conservative party-she thinks hard work correlates to wealth
An accident, a divorce etc are enough to make somebody homeless. Its so sad :(

Yeonmi, I’m so glad you were able to leave N. Korea! I was adopted from an orphanage in Seoul and am so thankful I live in America! I wish North Korean citizens could be free.

Yeonmi your videos help me appreciate my life even though I'm broke all the time I have a home and food and I feel so guilty every time I throw away food now because of the poor hungry babies in North Korea. It's so unfair but I thank you for giving me a greater appreciation for my blessings.❤️🙏
Thank you for educating us. There are still rural Americans living similarly - even just 3 miles from the most prosperous prosperous village in Wisconsin where average home costs $2.5M.
Interestingly, the expensive appliances we buy for $Thousands each, are built in S. Korea with N. Korean and Chinese parts.
