I actually was on the detail to collapse the chutes. This was all new to me and I hadn't been to jump school yet. I was scheduled to be in the next scheduled class. We had several of our troops working the DZ. Some of the new ones quit after seeing that. I eventually went and graduated the 5th of June. Incidentally on my fifth jump, Westmoreland was on the DZ and he pinned our wings on us. I do have the Life magazine also. Very interesting and eventful first three years in the Army. I served for 21 yrs. Airborne all the Way.

I served as a Parachute Rigger at Fort Campbell KY and men died one of them my friend like the tragic jump in 1958 it’s human error. Paratrooper’s are trained on what to do when you are jumping in strong winds not to be drugged by the wind

Thank you to the Galloway family for sharing their personal account of history. Here is hoping our brave soldiers remain better protected by those that lost their lives following orders before them.

My father in law was one of the 101st Airborne paratroopers that was saved by a photographer. Sgt.Douglas E Gray.

My dad sad someone helped him with collapsing the parachute. He said before they jumped they kept waiting for the jump to be cancelled because of the winds.

my uncle , who is still living at age 82, he was just here at my house, talks about this often. He was in the 101st and was on this jump. He said the air wind was 55mph and shouldn't have happened. He said he landed and was drug along until he hit a ditch. He tried to help another person, but then the wind got him again so he could only take care of himself as he got tangled in his chute. He talked that his son , my cousin found this video.. so I came to see it. Elmer Farrell is my uncle, a great man.

Wind was not 55mph, I was there.
      C battery 321st artillery.
1957-1960. Wrong smoke grenade pulled, should have been red to abort.

This maneuver is officially known as "Operation Eagle Wing". My Dad was one of the injured. A copy of the after-action report is located at USAHEC in Pennsylvania.

Thanks Son, for looking that up. Five dead and 137 injured is a lot to pay, just because of planning. Westmoreland probably should have been court martialed, but who knows the whole story? There was always a Drop Zone Officer of the Day in charge of the operation...He most likely is the one who was the scape goat. That stuff usually rolls down hill. That jump was talked about for a long time.
