Why the Aceh War in Indonesia Lasted so Long
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2023
- The Aceh War was a long and bloody conflict that lasted from 1873 to 1913 between the Sultanate of Aceh, located in what is now the Indonesian province of Aceh, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Dutch had been trying to establish control over the lucrative Acehnese pepper trade, but faced fierce resistance from the Acehnese.
The war was characterized by brutal fighting on both sides, with the Dutch using modern military technology such as machine guns, artillery, and warships to overwhelm the Acehnese guerrilla forces. The Acehnese, for their part, employed hit-and-run tactics and made extensive use of fortifications and trenches to resist the Dutch advance. They Dutch used a new formation: Korps Marechaussee te voet.
The war finally came to an end in 1913, when the Dutch managed to kill the main Acehnese leader. However, violence never stopped. The conflict had a profound impact on both the Acehnese and the Dutch, with many Acehnese seeing it as a struggle for independence and a symbol of resistance against colonialism, while the Dutch faced criticism both at home and abroad for their brutal tactics and the high cost of the war.

As a Javanese the Acehnese is one of the most fascinating ethnic group that I always love to learn about when it comes to Indonesian history. The fact that they have so many iconic freedom fighters such as Keumalahayati, Cut Nyak Dhien, Cut Nyak Meutia, Chik Di Tiro, Teuku Umar, Fatahilah, and later Teungku Daud Beureuh is astonishing.
The New Order would have done well to not forget history and learned from the Dutch when they try to subdue the Free Aceh Movement, the DOM (Daerah Operasi Militer) carried out by the regime would only fan the flame of rebellion.

@@austronesia854Indonesians never learn about their true history in classrooms. It's inconvenient to a lot of people, especially people who decided to side with the Dutch, which is majority of the population even many Acehnese themselves. Half of the soldiers sent to quell the Aceh rebellions are Javanese as you can see in photos presented in the video. Also, Acehnese fought for the Sultanate of Aceh not Republic of Indonesia, even after Pemuda Declaration. They do not feel to be part of Indonesia, hence a lot of resentment against Indonesian rule in Aceh even today.

we Acehnese were very used to war, we even have lullaby like "dodaidi", mothers sing this lullaby to their kids before sleep
some of the lyric :
Wahee aneuk bek taduek le (hey kid dont relax)
Beudoh sare ta bila bangsa (get up and defend your country)
Bek ta takot keu darah ile (do not be afraid of the blood that flows)
Adak pih mate poma ka rela (even if you die, mother is willing)
kids in Aceh were listening to this war cry every nights before sleep
Hebat nya ibu2 aceh, pejuang
In Indonesia, some of us claimed that "Aceh never fell"
The sultanate broke, but the warriors never did.
That's where it came down to.
CADIA...... I mean ACEH STANDS !!!!!
This, I also being taught that Aceh the only province that never ruled by the Dutch. But when I visited Banda Aceh, there is Dutch memorial there. I guess this video answer it.
Also, kinda sad to see divide et impera by the Dutch works on some sultanate
Thats just what sore loser mean, you are clearly lost but too deep in denial to accept your loss and move ahead
@@worlds3061cadia is not losing they were successful in defending it before abandon the failure dropped the whole fortress on it, aceh is clearly lost but deep in denial
Aceh survived that long because 3 things=
1. Ethnic solidarity : During Padri war the dutch armed one of the local warlord to hope he will be pro-dutch and lengthen the war to weaken acehese kingdom. Instead he made peace with aceh and make coalition to ATTACK THE DUTCH.
2. International aid : aceh have respectable Navy (and cannons, courtesy of Ottomans) before dutch VOC become established and fought tooth and nails with the portuguese. The british explorer James Lancaster asked for peaceful passage to acehese King and in return british gave independence guarantee to acehese with permission of the Queen Elizabeth I. Only shortly before aceh war the british revoked the guarantee in turn for malaya and other dutch colony and it surprised the Aceh kingdom it frantically made them seek diplomacy to other european power, which none replied.
3. Sane leaders with principles : they don't want to give concessions or ask dutch help at all. Sunda kingdom asked VOC to be their ally against Mataram and that's how Batavia exist at first (as their offshore military base) but instead of protection it become a node to start colonialism. Mataram have the most insane of all, Amangkurat I was an opressive (and horny ruler) his opression and fuckery made everyone mad (he patrol village for cute girls to fuck, even had affair with prime minister's wife which made entire palace furious!) thus many rebelled. He then razed many villages and executed experienced shipbuilders and craftsman out of fear they would ignite further rebellion. He singlehandedly destroyed century old naval industry making java have no navy to compete with dutch in the future. Then because everyone hated him and he hardly have trusted aides, he asked for VOC help to quell the rebellions giving VOC spice monopoly rights in some of Mataram's ports and made Mataram army just a ceremonial army because VOC already handled internal security affairs.
These things were not taught in school, you need to seek about it yourself. Indonesian history have meme-ish insane moments like this where a king just give important things wholesale to foreigners for protection, so he have freedom to do wild shenanigans. We are not a defenseless victim of europeans, but of our leadership's stupidity!
read about Amangkurat I massacring 5000 - 6000 Ulama and their families after a failed coup.
I tend to think the dutch invaders as barbaric, but man, do we have a load of mad kings that'd bring the game of thrones to shame.

ATJEH LOEN SAYANG
The Aceh War occurred around the same time as the Boer War. Both the Dutch and British were seeking to consolidate control over their colonies. As in Aceh, British and Dominion forces faced guerrilla warfare and also established concentration camps.
The Dutch experience during the Aceh War also has some similarities with the US experiences in the Vietnam and Afghan wars. As with the Americans, the Dutch had to deal with a strong indigenous resistance movement with grassroots support.
The American "pacification" of the Philippines and extinguishing its "unrecognized" independent "First Republic" would be an interesting study. The Boer concentration camps are quite tame, unlike the American strategy used on the archipelago to subdue and might have killed 1/5 of the population.
Absolutely the war 113 people united us solder inf each kingdom .
The closest vietnam war comparison is the Indonesian revolution
Surprisingly both Indonesia and Vietnam declared their independence in 1945, although full independence wouldn't come until both French and Dutch were defeated
The American in Vietnam was a different ERA using more advanced weapons....in Afghanistan , American were using drones with satellite 🛰️📡 guidance system .. you cannot compare Boer War and ACEH wars with Vietnam War..
@@EarthForcesThe British used a similar tactic in Southeast Asia in the 1950s against the communist insurgency in Malaya. It worked there but when the Americans tried it in South Vietnam a decade later, it was an abject failure. The difference was the existence of strong grassroots political movements in South Vietnam that supported the insurgency, whereas communist support in Malaya was fragmented.

Also, this war reminds me of the wars we (Portuguese) waged in late 19th/ early 20th century in East Timor, where some 20.000 deaths occured. René Pelissier wrote extensively about this. Maybe this could be a nice idea for an episode of yours dedicated to "lesser known colonial wars"...

My maternal grandfather, was sent from the Netherlands to Aceh as a soldier. He was in several engagements, and was wounded twice. He served there in the early 1900s. I must say, that at school (in the Netherlands) I learned a lot higher casualty rate. I would say ten times higher (on the Aceh or Atjeh as I learned it) side. My history teacher did not hesitate to call it genocide. Although he also remarked that life was cheap at the time (see the insane WW1 death toll).

same as in america vs vietnam / afghanistan. america won battles but the locals just dont like to be ruled by them, so it just will never end.
Well it was crazy back then, they dont consider natives as human beings like them after all. So theres no such thing as "Genocide" against them. Especially since theyre not christian. Aceh was and is pretty much still a melting pot of different cultures & religions.
The Japanese invaded to get Indonesian oil, I wonder what their policy and experience in Aceh was? Also I suspect the actual figures of Acehnese deaths, especially around 1913, was much higher. Excellent video as always.
Similar Acehnese rebel against Japanese too. Apparently they were forced to change the direction of prayer to face the rising sun in the east (probably some form of emperor cult). So they rebel, both uleebalang and ulama revolted against the Japanese. The most prominent was the movement of Teungku Abdul Djalil (ulama) in 1942. Nearing the end of the war, there was basically a civil war, after vacuum of power. In general, uleebalang supported the Dutch return, while ulama supported republican government, though plenty of figures in both camps. Teuku Abdul Hamid Azwar (republican uleebalang) leader of TKR (embrio of TNI) beat a Japanese battalion in Krueng Panjoe in Nov 1945. Fearing probably another long guerrilla war, the Dutch never return to Aceh. Plenty of dutch leaning uleebalang were massacred with their family. Aceh became a decidedly republican stronghold. Its society also became decidely more islamic, sowing the seeds of more conflict with a more secular government of Indonesia later.
Excellent video, many thanks.

a small correction: the gun you show at 6:19 is actually a Beaumont-Vitali magazine rifle. It's a conversion of the original single shot Beaumont rifle to a magazine fed rifle with the addition of a box magazine as designed by an italian named Vitali (similar conversions were done by the Italians with their Vetterli rifles). Tohse conversions were made from 1884 onwards I think. So they would not have been available in 1873. I don't know in what way the dutch converted their muzzle loading rifled muskets. But I am sure they used some conversion system similar to the Snider or Springfield Trapdoor system as most other nations did the same. Those must have been the mainstay during the 1873 battles. Does anyone know more?

This was a deadly war for the Netherlands because they faced a large nation that was persistent and brave, namely the Acehnese. Thousands of Dutch soldiers died in that battle, so they brought Madurese and Ambonese Javanese slaves to become mercenaries against the Acehnese at that time until 1913. they were desperate and frustrated and even massacred civilians at a time when the majority were children and women in Aceh
Dutch are well known as the biggest colonial scums of the 19th century. Am glad for the deaths of the thousands of these colonial Dutch filth.

@@multatuli1 The Dutch kingdom once sent thousands of troops to attack Aceh because of their ambition to win the war but in fact they suffered a crushing defeat in Aceh.

dont be stupid, indonesia was based on dutch east indies or "hindia belanda" in local lingo. if you question "indonesia is one unit that cannot be separated" then you should question the dutch for did so in the first place. it has nothing to do with people being indoctrinated.
"Indonesian history books are not written in full." you should not blame indonesia if the its "full" history is saved in leiden libraries and not owned by indonesia.
indonesia, malaysia, and philipine were supposed to merge together as they share similar culture.

lol another one of those revisionists. Aceh Sultanate was a hotbed of piracy and constantly raided Christian, Buddhists and Hindus to either enlsave or outright kill because in your small muslim minds, being non-Islamic is nothing more than animal. European colonialism didn't just spring out of thin air. Chinese supported the first colonists the Portuguese because of unfair and unjust policies. The Hindus and Indian traders also supported the Portuguese in the bombardment and capture of Malacca because of muslim oppression. The local Hindu/Buddhist Malays also sought support from the Portuguese, British and Dutch because of Muslim piracy and interference. Don't paint Islam as some sort of peaceful religion. While your awful religion started by a p3d0phile who mounted 9 year old Aisha spread by the sword, the internet is killing it off because we see it for how horrible it is. This isn't the dark ages anymore where anyone outside of Islam and the Middle East doesn't have access to your books. Actually, as long as you don't have an industry to supply you with percussion caps flintlocks are still usefull. The use of a percussion lock on a blunderbuss might indicate the warrior to be a personal guard to some important person. Blunderbusses were preferred arms for personal guards and those would also be among the firsts to receive such an upgrade
@@JosipRadnik1 however most of flintlock musket were smoothbore and could be the worst rifle when it comes to accuracy and couldn't even fire during rain time (due to rain exposure towards gunpowder) . Its not suprising as the french indochina later vietnam war . lasted quite a few years as well and that was in much more modern age . lasting 27 years. Jungle warfare and insurgence warfare is not easy to fight .
Indeed, jungles aren't good to fight in.

FYI, 4 Dutch generals died during Aceh war:
1. General J.H.R. Köhler (1873)
2. General J.L.J.H. Pel (1876)
3. General Henry Demmeni (1886)
4. General J.J. Karel de Moulin (1896)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aceh_War
The first one in battle. The others too?
@@HistoryHustle According Dutch source, General Pel died because of brain bleeding. Demmeni died because of disease and evacuated to Padang and died there. While De Moulin died because of heat stroke. But for me the reasons were not convincing.
A yes i really like Dutch history in Indonesia and the Aceh war is a very interesting war!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent history lesson. Very evenly and factually told. No opinions! Today, we are lost in opinions, while facts are hidden from us. Thanks a lot, Stefan (?). Could you talk at some time about the actual motivation for the Aceh war? Was it economic profit through taxation, kolonialism/landgrabbing, fear for loss of acquired gains, just private career benefits, etc?
Think you sum it up perfectly.
Do you still plan to make videos even while travelling?
I am yes! I also have much content already made and planned uploaded.

Thank you very inspiring. Could you please make a video about the General Raymond Westerling's war in Sulawesi that claimed lives of 40,000 of people? This is also underrated colonial history that needs to be brought to public.
Already did. See Dutch war crimes Indonesia.
Hello, my name is Pedro and I live in Temperley - Argentina, I love your channel!!! . I would like to ask you a question please, was General K Van Der Heyden of Indonesian origin? .thank you very much a big hug for you
Aceh never gave up. Why. When the Acehnese army almost lost to the Dutch army (the majority of the Dutch soldiers were mercenaries from other areas of Indonesia, especially Java), the Sultan of Aceh surrendered the sovereignty of Aceh to the people of Aceh, thus the people of Aceh continued to fight even though the sultan was captured by the Dutch. Aceh continued to be 'independent' until the formation of the Indonesian state
And they later rose up against the Indonesian state.
@@HistoryHustleand they lose to a tsunami.
@@HistoryHustleYes, because Indonesia, especially the president at that time, "Soekarno-Hatta, did not keep his promise to the people of Aceh through the agreement he made with" Daud-Bereueh (Hero of Aceh). That was the biggest betrayal of the Acehnese people.
@@gronthat1500 Daud Beurueh was never declared a National Hero through the Indonesian government, he was a radicalist/islamic fundamentalists who joined the Darul Islam rebellion. Islam does not allow fundamentalism (khawarij/salafi) and require people to take a moderate stance (wasatiyyah). Islam also tells people that Nationalism is a part of the Islamic faith (Hubbul wathon minal iman), "nationalism is a part of Iman". If anything you want sharia law, you should now that Indonesia ratifies the UNCAT (United Nations Convention Against Torture). Which bans any form of Corporal Punishment, especially public corporal punishments. You should just draft with regional sharia laws with imprisonment based system only which doesn't have corporal punishment as Islam teaches to follow national law and international law on that country you are residing, it doesn't tell Muslim followers to rebel.
Interesting how this little remembered war presents a case study that could have reduced the learning curve the West saw in Afghanistan and Iraq, similar to how the US Counter-Insurgency in the Philippines presented lessons that had to be expensively re-learned in Vietnam.
There are similairities yes.
The difference is in Afghanistan and Vietnam, the Americans lost but in this case for Aceh the Dutch won the war and Aceh is annexed to the Dutch East Indies which is now mostly Indonesia. Now the Aceh province can't implement sharia law fully bcs the Dutch influences is still felt by them from losing the Aceh war.
Really interesting video. Thanks 👍. ("hot bath" or "hotbed"?😮?)
Thanks for replying.
Amazing History ❤

Well, not only the Dutch who failed winning the Acehnese hearts and minds, but also the Indonesian Javanese. It's gonna take many many years to make any Acehnese feels as Indonesian like the other ethnic groups in Indonesia. Compare to their neighbors like Bataknese branches, Riau Malay, and Nias who already feel as Indonesian, but not Acehnese. But at least the political tension is under "well-controlled" by the ex-Free Aceh Movement (GAM) which already enjoy their superior autonomous powers in the entire Aceh under Indonesian constitution. This is better treatment by Indonesian government rather than by the Dutch colonial government.
The Indonesian goverment is not so Javan outside the island even before reformation. Heck, the group that got the most economic benefit is Chindo cronies and the Sunda middle class. Javans only got cultural supremacy during the New Order. Even then, its constrained to Java
The transmigrates? The impoverished Madurese, that has similar reputation to European Romanis
Its seems you are not familiar of the root of GAM conflict or even Aceh modern history.
First of all i guess, Gayo is 'Bataknese branch'.
Acehnese fought for Indonesia independence. Just after Japanese was defeated in ww2, Acehnese devolved into civil war of generally Ulama supporting Indonesia and Uleebalang supporting Dutch (formerly employed as colonial administrators). You can pay attention to the title, Teuku is uleebalang, teungku is ulama. Previously ofc above these group were the sultan (which by the time after aceh war did not hold much power anymore). The dutch fearing probably a long guerrilla war never returned to Aceh. Hence Aceh becoming republican stronghold and ulama (islamist) becoming more prominent as many uleebalang and their family (secular) was killed. The leader of this most prominent ulama was Teungku M. Daud Beureuh.
He was however dissapointed because the Indonesia government that was formed is more secular. Hence he later joined the islamist rebellion of Darul Islam of Katosuwiryo in Java, trying to make an islamist Indonesia. Darul islam was defeated elsewhere and hence the acehnese movement transformed to GAM (with Hasan di Tiro, his protege), as it wanted a seperate islamist acehnese state.
However its not like all uleebalang are gone, the founder of local TNI (initially TkR) who defeated Japanese in Krueng Panjoe 1945 was republican uleebalang, Teuku Abdul Hamid Azwar, Teuku Hamzah Bendahara, etc. Many Uleebalang joined TNI to not be accused of Dutch supporter as they were employed as colonial administrator by the Dutch).
It can be considered retaliatory an uleebalang-secular dominated institution (tni iskandar muda) massacred ulama-islamist dominated movement (gam). Like the ulama did to the uleebalang in the 1940s.
So the root of fighting in Aceh was the forces that pulled Aceh toward a more secular (Uleebalang) or toward a more islamic (Ulama) society. Its an old wound that hopefully with time will heal. Acehnese currently have their own sharia and they will decide if it wants to be removed later.

of course it took a long time, Acehnese people use to controlled the straits for hundred years.
they're well trained in combat against pirates and guerilya 😅.
Military supplies from Ottoman empire to Aceh was an attributes to their success too
As far as I know this was limited.
Aceh war is so crazy, what a war. aceh warrior so crazy
Wild times.
Achenese are hardcore. Their women are known to be ferocious warriors. One of them is Admiral Malahayati who led an armada that mainly consist of war widows seeking to acenge their husbands and sons. Her story is so remarkable i honestly hard to believe it the first time i heard it. But the there are a lot of historycal documents that confirmed her exploits. I personally made a pilgrimage to her grave in Banda aceh and spoke with one of her descendants
Anda orang mana?
The Acehnese are quite resistance to outsider, Dutch took 40 years while Indonesian government spent 29 years fighting insurgency there and it might be keep going on today if it's not for the destructive 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami forcing both of them to find compromise
Yah...sebuah negara yang makmur dengan cara membunuh dan mengorbankan darah orang lain..

As an Aceh people i want to tell Thank you for telling History from aceh
You're welcome. Thanks for your reply.
I saw on TV recently that the king and queen of terrorists came to Indonesia and apologized for the crimes and brutality of their nation against the Indonesian people, up to 100 descendants of the Indonesian nation will not forget the crimes of the Dutch terrorists, who have killed the Indonesian people for 300 years. years, the Indonesian people will continue to remember and tell stories to the younger generation of Indonesia about the crimes of Dutch terrorists against the Indonesian nation.
Those ‘terrorists’ werent even alive during the age of colonisation. Netherlands moved on from that and proceded to rely on their own natural gas and naval construction of ships, right after the destruction of WW2. They were in ruins, but they still managed to rise up and become one of the richest countries in the world. Indonesia should just fix their own flaws, like the dutch did, instead of whining like you are.
Now this is interesting
Thanks for watching.
I wish Aceh people someday will sincerely felt as Indonesian
Please explain.
@@HistoryHustle as the man said now aceh 'ruled' by java
@@HistoryHustle Some former separatists rebels used to spread propaganda amongst the Acehnese that says Aceh were 'ruled' by Java. Unfortunately for them that argument now has become steadily declining after central govt has put a "hands-off" policy by granting Aceh a huge level of authonomy status after the disastrous 2004 tsunami that led to Helsinki Peace Accord between separatists and Indonesian govt. Not long after that it only reveals a very grim fact to common Achenese that those who were spread that propaganda and (ironically) now sat on the highest thrones in Aceh are doing nothing but filling up their own pockets, forcing the commoners in Aceh to leave the province to find jobs and education somewhere in North Sumatra or as far as on remoted areas in Java. Making Aceh now become the second-poorest province in Sumatra region with a very startling budget deficit each year no matter how much the money central govt has injected to the province's annual budget, a huge betrayal from what Acehnese hoped in matters on making that province become the most prosperous place in Sumatra. Its all revealed completely when the previous Aceh governor (and also the former leader amongst the separatists) were got caught red handed by anti-corruption task force recieving tons of money that were supposedly used for helping central govt to boost freeing up lands during the construction of a highway that were now connecting Banda Aceh and Medan (North Sumatra).
As an Acehnese, I say never😊
