Three months ago today we lost our twenty year old cat Big Boy….we were immediately adopted by a cat roaming the neighborhood who today became officially our cat by being neutered and named…..his name is Larry! Named for your friend Larry…..everyone who he has been introduced to is so amused by his name because I use your way of pronouncing LARRY…anyway he is doing great and we have fallen in love with him…..I swore I was through having a pet at my age because of the horrible Grief of losing our twenty year old cat…BUT Larry has changed all that…thank you Wonderhussy!!!!!

I'm glad to see people making good functional use out of desert area ( the date farm)... I REALLY hope people don't start getting ideas once the realize how much water can actually be found out there.. The Western deserts are really the " last frontier"so freaking beautiful and diversified.. TY Sarah for at least showing the world how beautiful it really is.. That watershead isn’t the Amargosa river, although it does meet the Amargosa at Acme. The Noonsday mine is just to the east in the same general area of the war eagle mine. The original townsite was also called noonsday camp. Mining ceased in the 50s and abandoned on the 70s. Scrappers and vandals did the rest. The talc mine was owned by western talc and worked into the 80s, I was told. The shaft that you were looking in was one of the more stable shafts in the area and had good timbered collars until some nitwit poured diesel fuel into it a burned out the collars. Interesting area I’ve visited many times. Didn’t know about the T&L connection though.
Small screws, nuts, and bolts were put in Mason Jars and when they screwed the jar onto the lid hanging from the ceiling it made for convenient storage.
At 9.45 Wonderhussy starts marching on her hike with key STILL in hand! Me: freaking out "SAFEGUARD THAT KEY"!! ...yes put key deep in pack hooked to a loop so it can't fall out either. WHY? .....Ever look for a key in the desert? ☘☘☘ P.s FUNNY KEY STORY: i was hiking from Humber Park (idyllwild) up Devil's Slide into the San Jacinto wilderness. At the Saddle Junction (the top of Devil's Slide where all the trails veer off in different directions) I had paused & got a chattn' with a fellow hiker. He said he was on a retreat in Idyllwild and drinking in the peace n quiet. It transpired he had a church in Lakeside California (San Diego). After some sustenance I was on my way and MUCH later that day was very surprised to meet up with him in that exact same area. He was looking for his motorbike key and had to hike Devil's Slide back up a second time. Nobody wants to hike Devil's Slide twice in one day that's for sure. It was the end of a long day and I was very happy and impatiently descending Devil's Slide to meet at the car in which I carpooled (they were doing another hike). After about an hour I got to the car, and in anticipation of getting there before them had lefy myself some cold water and snacks hidden under the car. It had been hot, so to my relief i saw they also left me the car key. But I quickly changed my mind since there's no way in heck the owner of that fancy SUV would leave me his key. As I tried to make sense of the key I saw a motorbike parked right next to our vehicle. It was like trying to put a puzzle together. The key looked different and zi realized it probably is a motorbike key. There's a motorbike right there, and I met a guy who lost a motorbike key! But WHY was HIS KEY, UNder OUR CAR... tidily placed onto my things. All I coukd think was that he dropped his key or left it in his bike. Someone saw it. Thought that maybe we are all together. (It is not uncommon for meetup groups to meet and hike together from Humber Park. Altho it was a leap. The person was probably petrified to leave the key on the bike letting anyone just drive off with it. I was THRILLED for the BIKE OWNER that I found his key, but sadly I had not an inch of strength left to hike up Devil's Slide to go tell him. I had no choice but full knowing how tormented he must be, to just wait. Well his face when I told him where I found his key, it was just as perplexed as I was. But we were WAY TOO EXHAUSTED to discuss it even.

I see the Mason Jar lid question was already answered so the two glass pieces hanging down were insulators to keep the electrical wires from touching each other and off the surface of the mine so as not to energize any metal in the area. The wires would have been attached about half way up the pieces.
Your "Bombers", sound lie a small Tennessee Horse fly. 40 years ago, I got bit by one, at work. I didn't even know it was there, until it felt like I'd been stabbed, in the chest. By the time I got my shirt unbuttoned, I had blood running down my chest. I grabbed the first aid kit and some alcohol swabs, and got the blood stopped. I had a hole in my hide, that looked like it was made by a tiny ice cream scoop. I looked at my shirt and had a matching, 1/16" hole, in my effing shirt. I bandaged my wound, and then, I spotted him. This bastard was almost solid black and half the size of a humming bird. I was in a enclosed tool room. I grabbed a broom, chased it around for 10 minutes, and settled his hash.

ya, it cheeses me off too that mining sites were just abandoned. I have seen a lot of instances where old mining sites were reclaimed & turned into nice recreational opportunities. In Florida old phosphite pits have been turned into bass fishing resorts.

People sometimes nail jar lids to the ceiling or the underside of a cabinet so they can store things in jars without shelves. You screw the jar onto the lid from the bottom and it hangs there. You can pick out what you need without having to dig around on shelves. The round screen looked like a splatter screen like you put over a frying pan so grease doesn't splatter. That one was kind of big and might have been to contain sparks in a fire ring or barrel used to burn garbage. I think the car was a Model T or Model A pickup with a wooden bed. The "vent" was on the back. The body had been flipped forward and was upside down. Model Ts came packed in wooden crates and the crates were used for the dash board and other parts of the car, so they were part wood.
The wild melons look the same as what I remember growing in outback Queensland Downunder when I was a kid out there,we called them paddy melons,some old timers made jam from them cheers old Al

The lids on the ceiling are fastened (screwed, nailed, ...) in. Small items are sorted into different glass jars. The the jars are screwed into the lids. My grandfather used this technique for screws, washers, nails, ...

That one was kind of big and might have been to contain sparks in a fire ring or barrel used to burn garbage. I think the car was a Model T or Model A pickup with a wooden bed. The "vent" was on the back. The body had been flipped forward and was upside down. Model Ts came packed in wooden crates and the crates were used for the dash board and other parts of the car, so they were part wood.

The lids on the ceiling are fastened (screwed, nailed, ...) in. Small items are sorted into different glass jars. The the jars are screwed into the lids. My grandfather used this technique for screws, washers, nails, ...
Mines make dumps, mills make tailings.
Glass jars were used to store screws and or nails. They were held by the lids nailed to the roof.
