LOL thanks. There are 2 people that always do it on a new launch. I am worthy of thumbs down for sure as we all are but they are done before enough time would have to go by to even watch the video. LOL
Some people are jerks! They don't even watch the video before they give it a thumbs down. I honestly think some people just go through channels thumbing down videos just to be mean!
I'd say thumbs down to the people giving the thumbs down to any of Gary's videos! Lol. Gary - you're a great teacher! This is my first year gardening and thanks to your videos, I've managed to build my own raised beds and have tons of seedlings ready to be transplanted. I was intimidated by all of it but your videos give so much encouragement and make them sound simple and easy. Thank you, Gary, from the bottom of my heart!

I so much appreciate all the tips. I have about a dozen planters sitting around from the last couple of years. I was reluctant to dump the growing medium and add anew. I was looking for ways to put it to good use. Now you have inspired me to sift it all and amend with cocoa peat, peat moss, and various micro and macro nutrients to start using it this year. I will simply dump any "organic debris" into the compost bin. I might have to give an extra dose or two of seaweed during the growing season to make sure my vegetable plants are not starved. I've had huge pest issues in my area so I've added an extra step of solarizing the soil in a clear bag (just takes a few days because of the relatively small volume) to help break the pest lifecycle. I can even reuse the bag afterwards.
This sounds like something I need to do This year but I've never done it before. Do you just use a garbage bag? Any additional information you can share would help me out alot.
@@paulajohnson1096 yeah I just bought some clear trash bags from Costco. I put the soil in and water it, double bag, and then tuck the open end underneath to reduce the amount of air in them.
What a wonderful video! Was going to dump out my flower planter soil! I’ve ordered the peat, and organic fertilizer , have my own compost! Yeah, thank you so much I spent so much on potting soil, not any more! Thank you, I love all your videos. Have learned a lot!
I just sent this video to my daughter! Yesterday she was asking me if you could reuse your potting soil. I told her yes, but this video explains it more in depth! Thank you, Gray! Love your channel! And even thumbs down HELPS your channel! Although this definitely deserves a thumbs up!

Seeds, plant starts, even fruit trees and berry bushes can be purchased with SNAP benefits/food stamps. Hydroponics stores often have a better deal on worm castings than the big box stores. I was paying $5-8 for a 2 qt bag, but I was able to get a big 40lb bag for $20 this year at my local hydroponics shops. I'm super glad I discovered them! They have a lot of good stuff there that regular vegetable gardeners can use, so I just wanted to encourage folks to check them out and support a local business. I hope this helps!

Hi Gary! Thanks for this video... I started my gardening journey last year in containers only so I was just wondering how to get it ready for this year! Ha! So you answered most of my p
Gary- one suggestion- have you thought about applying no-dig ideas to containers? So just add compost on top? I'm trying that right now- and the first season of doing that was very successful. This will be season 2 of no-dig- 3 of not touching the containers. Something to experiment with. (base was a 2/2/1 peat, compost, pearlite mix) I am trying to add worms every year... we will see how this works.
I havent because the worm and soil life in container is different than my earth beds. I do top dress. But I would bet your base is outstanding from the looks of it. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN We will see- because I have an invasive root problem, I changed to container many years ago, and I have close to 50. So replenishing them is kind of a pain. I also am using a rain gutter system with rain barrel water supply so that I'm not constantly watering them. Hopefully, I will remember to post next year when you do a spring container update.

I dig up clay from a foot or deeper in the yard and blend in. Often leaving chunks that break down on their own. The chunks hold water too, which lets them break down.
Cool idea. I can't grow in ground because I only have a 2 inches of dirt above clay soil. My plants sit in water because it can take forever for the rain to drain away.
Thanks, Gary, you do a great service to those of us who are still learning the art of gardening. I have an unrelated question, is there a way to prevent powdery mildew on my peonies? I know it isn’t that harmful, but I really hate the look of it. Thanks in advance for the info! A tidbit, coconut coir is pronounced like coyer, not core.
Oh no.. on the coir. It was passed on to me. Anyway.. on peonies... I put Seranade on mine before it arrives. Daconil is not organic but it works really well. I use it sometimes on non edibles. Oh my gosh, I just stared at my containers all weekend, wondering how the heck to get them ready for planting!?!! 😆 I started gardening last year but only in containers & I didn’t dare start any seeds! I got lots of free things so I didn’t blow my budget. ***Questions: How do we prep 2nd yr containers with perennials? I’ve got new growth in my herb container!! I think it’s all my mints. ***Can I replace store bought organic fertilizer and instead use coffee grounds, egg shells, compost, manure, weed tea, worm castings & banana peels? Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! 😃
What? Those things you want to use aren't fertilizer lol. Coffee grounds are acidic. Egg shells take forever to break down and unless you clean them,it can create nasty stuff. Manure is acidic. Why would you use banana peels? Maybe in a compost pile lol. Sounds crazy and not useful. Should find a different routine/better ideas.
Thoroughly LOVE your videos; always packed with valuable information!! I LOVE your book too. I have a question for you: If you find some insects, like aphids, on your lettuce (or other veggies or flowers) that were in your container, even after removing the crop/flowers and weeds, roots, etc., could you STILL reuse that potting mix or should you first treat it with neem oil (for example), or is it better to just dump it and clean out the container before planting something new so as not to risk another infestation or their eggs in the soil? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!!

Gary, I believe with container gardening, you showed that you drill holes about 2 inches up from the bottom. Does the excess two inches of water in the bottom of the container ever get rancid? Or is it ever detrimental to the plant -- mostly tomatoes?
Nah. Because it gets pulled up pretty fast. Once the plants are big even faster. Thanks for another great video, Gary. Just curious - why don't you wear gloves when your hand mixing the soil? That would probably save some wear and tear on your hands - it's a long growing season.

Hi Gary😃👋 This looks so easy.. but do I need to sterilize the soil? also your soil mix doesn't look like it has enough perlite or vermiculite. Do I add perlite/vermiculite in each container as needed? And last question, if I don't have enough fertilizer can I use plant food instead?
Do you still recommend this process to revitalize potting mix. I'm growing everything in big flower pots and totes. My soil here in Northwest Georgia I'd pure clay and rock!
I havent but I bet you could. Peat just holds water and loosen mix. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

I just built a 2 foot deep raised bed. As of right now the bottom foot is fresh compost. I have not added peat moss and garden soil to the unfinished bed mlx yet. Will that much fresh compost be a problem (not cheap bagged store compost. It came from a large soil/conpost/mulch dealer near me)?
Hi Gary, I love watching your channel. Am looking for the black pots you are using I checked the containers and pot list I don,t see them on it. Thanks
I have a bit of a problem in my garden. I have around 60-80 pots from 30cm through to 50 cm and I thought I was doing a good thing blending my own soil garden mix around 70% and organic compost 30%. I realise now that the soil is too dense and the roots of the plants are so shallow. I want to empty out the soil from each pot and put some amendments to increase drainage and aeration. Could you recommend what is the best additive for heavy pot soil? Would it be something like a perlite?
They are pretty hardy. You can pull them out, fluff soil, divide and replant. Or just add some compost to the top and water well with a water soluble fertilizer. They can be manage with water soluble fert for years. Hi Gary, if my zucchini plants had powdery mildew last summer, should I get rid of the soil and pot and start new? Thank you for all your hard work. Been following you for 4 years now.

what do you think on putting a layer of not fully composted ,1-1/2 year old wood chips in the bottom of the containers? to give some mass, help with drainage?.
I add some rabbit manure and mix it in the top layer it works wonders. Get some rabbits! Ohh as well you really should be adding perlite so the roots get more air. Rabbit poo is free
Gary, Coir is not easy for me to come by, I live very rural in Missouri. Do you think it would be OK to just use peat and maybe throw a handful of the lime in? Great video.. what about perlite.. the original potting mix had perlite mixed that has pretty much broken down by the end of the season... Dont we need to add perlite for drainage?
I just found it wasnt needed. You could toss in a handful but I think it is more for show than purpose to be honest. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com

As usual, excellent video. I'm half container, half hydroponic and leaning more and more to hydroponic. My problem with renewing potting mixes is that the soil diseases and weeds are still there for the next season (do it just about how you showed). Live in zone 9, so I'm putting to rest for the summer most of the potting mixed plants. So do you have any recommendations to eliminate this problem with renewed potting mixes
I try to grow Asian vegetables in my raised bed for the past 3 years but I have not been successful. Every year I keep adding on soil so now my raised bed have a mixture of: garden soil, potting mix, top soil and planting soil. 1. Can I treat this mixture as earth and mix with peat moss? 2. One thing I noticed my current mixture of soil feel fluffy/light how would I treat it? I’m not sure that’s the reason why my plants won’t grow because of its texture. Thank you so much for your time.
Yes you can use yours as earth. If it is light you probably dont need peat moss. Can you add compost? Something well broken down. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Thanks for this. Exactly what I needed today. Just for one year my gardening will be mostly in containers while the sandy plot on the village that I just moved to is in process of being transformed. I love the way you just reach in there with bare hands and go for it. The reason I have never had a manicure.

Thank you Gary, I needed this question also answered.
Thanks for the timely info Gary. I have been recycling my soil this year particularly with this virus restricting our movements.
I have learned so much watching these videos. Thank you.
Very useful Idea, thanks a lot Gary, you are awesome.
I amended my pots today. Tomorrow I'm planting all except squash their not ready yet. Zone 7.
Great tip thanks

Hi from down under. Great video
(base was a 2/2/1 peat, compost, pearlite mix)
I am trying to add worms every year... we will see how this works.

Thank you so much for the information Gary. I was wondering about this the other day.

Bottom linie start spraying before it shows up.

Love this information!!!
Oh my gosh, I just stared at my containers all weekend, wondering how the heck to get them ready for planting!?!! 😆
I started gardening last year but only in containers & I didn’t dare start any seeds!
I have a question for you:
If you find some insects, like aphids, on your lettuce (or other veggies or flowers) that were in your container, even after removing the crop/flowers and weeds, roots, etc., could you STILL reuse that potting mix or should you first treat it with neem oil (for example), or is it better to just dump it and clean out the container before planting something new so as not to risk another infestation or their eggs in the soil?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!!
Thanks so much and thanks for the book support.

Thank you for this video I needed it! Perfect timing.

I have perenials in 5+ years pots. Should I re-pot these perenials with fresh dirt?
Hi Gary😃👋 This looks so easy.. but do I need to sterilize the soil? also your soil mix doesn't look like it has enough perlite or vermiculite. Do I add perlite/vermiculite in each container as needed? And last question, if I don't have enough fertilizer can I use plant food instead?
How can I make sure that old potting mix doesn’t have any organic matter or fungus please advise
Do you still recommend this process to revitalize potting mix. I'm growing everything in big flower pots and totes. My soil here in Northwest Georgia I'd pure clay and rock!
Hi Gary, peat moss is a little expensive here, can i use rice hull and carbonized rice hull instead?

Nice. I noticed too much worm castings makes it too wet.
Thanks a lot, sir.
Gary - What about large containers that have had mints growing in them for 2 years? How do I refresh the soil in there? Thanks!

I take the whole pot split and then dump then mix every year.

Love the wrist action with the fertilizer. Doesn't the peat make the mix acidic? If so, a little lime will equalized the pH back to 7ish.
You can add a little lime back to mitigate it. But I found over the years the acidity isnt as much as I was told to worry.

If you don't compost it properly it won't heat up and you'll have disease. If you have diseases you shouldn't reuse that soil!!! Start over with new.

Some of my seeds did not germinate in potting soil. So do I still need to refresh the potting soil? Or can i just microwave the soil and reuse it immediately for my next set of seeds? Will the old seeds germinate with the new ones? And what is the cut-off period for refreshing the soil?
You can refresh anytime. You can just replant the seeds really.
