    I was trained to use my thumb for six five four . Then first four the third string . Second for the second string and the third finger for the first string and my thumb on the guitar

  • @scsreaper
    @scsreaper 2 роки тому

    As I've come to find my own musical voice, I've ditched my pick 98% of the time. You were my first fingerpicking teacher and it is fantastic the way you put it in terms that we can understand. Over the last few years, I've mutated into a style that's part bass, part Travis, but for the most part instinctual. If I were to think about it, I use my thumb as down strokes and fingers (I use all four, but favor the first three) as up strokes, depending which one is closest to the string I wish to sound. For strums I use the thumbnail as an up stroke and the finger nails as down strokes.

    Great lesson. This is great for picking patterns. If I play with my thumb first three fingers I need to play two notes on the same string consecutively do I just use the same finger twice to pluck the string or do people use two fingers once each? I hope I question makes sense.

    • @stinemusiclessons
      @stinemusiclessons  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching Steve's video, Kellorn! To answer your question, yes, you can use two fingers on the same string if you need to play two or more notes on one string. You can't really "alternate pick" with your fingertips, so sometimes it's easier to play notes like that with two fingers, similar to how a bass player will pluck one string with two fingers.
      It just depends on the situation, and what feels most comfortable. Hope this helps! :-)

    How hard would it be to finger pick if your are missing a finger like the middle finger???

    • @stinemusiclessons
      @stinemusiclessons  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching, Christopher! To answer your question, first remember that different guitarists use different finger combinations to pick. Some use their thumb and two fingers, some use their thumb and three fingers, and some use their thumb and all four fingers.
      Usually, the thumb picks more than one string, often the bottom three or even four strings. So, you could try using your thumb for the lowest-sounding three strings, then use your index, ring finger, and pinkie for the higher sounding strings. Or if you want to use your pinkie as an "anchor" on the guitar body, you've still got your index and ring finger to pick with.
      The truth is, fingerpicking feels awkward at first, no matter how many fingers you have. Over time, your fingers build up muscle memory, and it gets a lot easier.
      So try out different combinations and find one that works for you. Remember, there have been many famous guitarists through the years who overcame injuries. Legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt lost the use of his pinkie and ring finger on his fretting hand, then went on to create some really awesome guitar solos using only two fingers.
      Another example is Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, who sliced two fingertips off of his fretting hand in a work accident when he was 17. Another is Jerry Garcia, who lost most of his ring finger on his picking hand long before the Grateful Dead ever existed.
      So give it a try! :-)
