This is definitely the best dupe I've seen. The intricate pieces actually look like intricate carvings instead of the decorative wood pieces that most people buy at Home Depot and glue on. Great job! But it looks super time consuming so I agree I wouldn't do it again too and I didn't even do it once hahah.
I would put a mix of matte to gloss clear coats over that to protect all the hard work! Turned out beautiful! Also...air dry clay is actually shockingly durable, but I would still be extra careful around the intricate bits. Adding a thick epoxy coat could help, but it would be noticably thick and probably negatively effect the texture / specular lighting.
really thorough work here, the persistence is admirable, the range of skills and techniques used was broad, and to top it off, it turned out beautifully ! Congrats !!
Another way to antique is paint I black first and go over it with rub n buff and whatever color you like. Just another way for you to try on something else
4:51 SORCERY!!! Btw, i really love how the frame turned out, like that foil and clay method has a lot of potential and i see myself using it. also the paint job turned out so good! about the shaving, maybe you could had skipped it by polishing the edged with water while the cay wasnt fully dry? idk, it doenst matter since you wont be doing this ever again lol

I’ve been trying to find info on how these were made historically so I can try to recreate it - then you dropped this video :D thanks!
I can’t explain that, but it’s so fascinating how I just started a mirror project in my house and suddenly you post this 😭🙏🏼
It's a sign that you have to finish it!!
i love the mix of the thinner frame with the ornate add ons, definitely worth it for a unique piece like that
