Informative comparison video, so what is your normal and all-out clubhead speed, ball speed and carry distance with your own 7 iron and which irons do you currently play?
I normally play the 301 CB irons and my normal swing speed is around 94-97 mph with the 7iron. I can get the speed up over 100 if I’m being silly but not controllable. I generally play for a 185 carry (at sea level on the Trackman) with about 6400 spin. I honestly haven’t paid a ton of attention to the ball speed like I should so that one I’m not sure about for an average. - Tim
Great video. I have a set of blades and a set of cavity backs. To your point about smash factor: when I really get hold of the cavity backs, then can fly way past any distance I was trying for. The blades, with the lower smash mean also far more control. No flying the greens
Are your numbers juiced on trackman? Altitude set high? I ask because I don't get anywhere near those distances with that ballspeed and clubspeed on my GCQuad.
Good idea for a video! If you're getting older like me, it's good to keep in mind that there are options if you're hung up on a number that you're supposed hit a certain club. On another note, are your clubs college class named? 101's being more forgiving/beginner and 301's more advanced? Are you going to come out with a higher level of advanced iron? Say 401's or 501's 😃. Or maybe, although this would be the antithesis of your less expensive club mission statement, a range of totally custom 701's or 801's (think BMW levels of cars trim packages) with custom ferrule's, stampings, powder coat finishes, and other accents. I've got an idea for a black powder coat for the topline of irons to make the faces pop and reduce glare. Could even do different colors and a matt finish. But I digress. Great video!
I would say neither of those, unless you are looking to get new clubs. Swinging all out just creates more error. If you can hit a ball at least 150+ with any club, then you would probably be better off trying to manage course tactics and setting up your shots back from the green.
Can you do a similar test with the PW? Doesn't have to be slower swing speed for a specific distance, I am just trying to get an idea of what to expect out of the PW vs my current irons. I just ordered a customized set of 101Ts which I am confident was the right choice for my game. But I keep seeing reviews with much longer distances than I currently hit my 7 iron, 5 iron, etc. I have older, Vokey wedges that I still love and am not replacing yet, but I am concerned that I may end up with a big gap between my new 101T PW and my current 52deg wedge.
I found you hitting PW in another video and got some insight to it. Maybe it would be helpful to see both ends of the set at various speeds? Dare I say 5 mph increments? I swing my PW about 5mph slower than it looks like you do (90mph for me). But one of my biggest hesitations in considering the Takomo irons was how it fits into my existing bag being I was only replacing 4-PW and all of the models seem to be longer and more forgiving than my existing, 20 yr old irons...
I play from a 11handicap, so no pro. My 7iron distance is 153yards. Nothing special, but was blown away when I played with a 32handicap beginner, that couldn't hit his 5 or 6 iron, he had no hybrid or fairway wood or driver, BUT he used his 7iron to tee off and his shortest was 190yards and averaged 205yards with it. He would hit it twice on par5 and long par4 and put us all to shame. EDIT: he plays with a secondhand set of Titleist 716 AP1 at 31° loft on his 7iron. I play Mizuno at 32° loft on my 7iron
@@marketsmoto3180 No, he is a farmer here in my country, naturally big and strong arms. Still insane, I have tried to force my 7 and still can't get anywhere close to that
Another interesting experiment Tim. My 7 iron carries right around 135 with a loft of 30.5 degrees, no idea on my swing speed with it. Back in the day was around 150-155 (would have been more loft on a 7 back then) 😐
I'm 53, but haven't played much over the last 25 years. I've been just hitting balls for the past few weeks to get my timing back. I was a 2hdcp 30 years ago, and hit my 7 around 170. Actually had my only hole in one in 1994, 174 yards with 845s 7 iron. I'm currently hitting it around 160 during my comeback.
Seems like the 301 has enough loft to stop on a green although if you were to swing 85+ mph I imagine the 101 might reach a higher peak and probably have a better landing angle?
My 6i is 32 deg which is my 150 yd club. The thought of having an 18 yd run out like you have on the 101 would terrify me. So i think my clubs would have to be either of the middle two 👍
I really need to find access to a launch monitor so I can see my numbers. I have no Idea. I hit my 7 around 165; 2004 Bridgestone Tourstage X-blades CB's lol.
Ha, I like that. I play the 14 year old TaylorMade R9 Tour Preferred with stiff KBS tour shafts and hit my 7 Iron (34 degrees) 150 on the nose with 76mph clubhead speed and -2 to -4 degrees attack angle. 😂
That is very interesting. I am in a similar set up, 9 year old AP2's with a 34° 7-iron. Since you've had them so long, can you confirm something that I've heard about aging (I'm 57) that you loose roughly 3 yards of distance each year. From what I've experienced, it's close. When I was fit for them, I was carrying the 7 about 185, nine years later, it's 162. Have you had a similar experience or are you still young enough that it hasn't changed all that much yet? Thank you for responding, if you do, if not, hopefully questions don't annoy you and I apologize. 🙏

Hi mate, I got fitted for them in 2010, when I was 34 and a 23 handicap. I am now 48, and got down to a12.4 handicap and I still hit them about the same distances, mainly having increased ball speed by hitting the sweet spot more often. I think my swing speed has gone down a little, but I can’t remember my numbers from back then. Now I must admit I haven’t played much for 6 years in between, when my youngest was born, until she was 6. But the last two years I have been playing once a week and practicing about once a week. I have had a lot of issues with my back, so I do a lot of stretching, and strength workout, about 20-30mins each day, mostly for my lower back. However, once I see I start I’ll lose distance, I’ll go back to my previous irons which I still have somewhere, Adam’s Golf GT2 undercut with a True Temper Regular shaft. And after that to my dad’s old Big Bertha irons with Fujikura’s light shaft. I think a softer more flexible shaft and perhaps a bigger clubface might help with distance, though perhaps less accurate? My real problem is that the last two rounds I haven topping my woods & rescues from the deck 😂 But it’s always something with this game, right? 😉
@@MaartenAnna It absolutely is. It sounds like you have a good plan in place! I've also got my dad's, step dad's and uncle's clubs to fall back on if I want something a bit softer. Good luck with your back, family and golf game! Thank you for the response!
The difference is in the clubhead. Not the loft. A hollow body iron will flex more just like a hybrid to generate more speed and more efficiency. Also how pure you are hitting center. I don’t like the hollow body irons because you often get those flyers that go over the green. I had p770’s and was not happy with the longer distance. I went back to mb’s and bought hogan icons. I like my 7 iron going 160 to 165. Nothing more, nothing way less. Even a bad shot it goes 150 ish range. But never to long.
Sadly, I typically carry my 7 iron 134 yards.... Nearly perfect contact every time. What is my swing speed? You should be able to calc that given the above. Oh wait, forgot one key element. I typically play all my rounds in sub 60 degree temps (half in less than 55)... Farenheit...
Spin seems so crazy low and decent angle looks too flat at this swing speed. Shows most people should play a ball that spins a lot more on full shots than they probably do unless they have high speed.
Information all golfers need. Thanks for the tests.
Brilliant Tim loved the video. Shows Takomo irons really well
Love the look of these clubs. I've signed up to be a tester through my golf spy, so fingers crossed 🤞
Fun video, love the product, love the content.

That is so club dependant. Good Test!

Great explanation and test. Makes one think should I swing all out or just get stronger lofted clubs and swing slower.

@@ToddPlaysGolf I hear ya I have the copper set of 301’s and hit my 7iron easily to 165-70 with a nice controlled coordinating swing
great comparison
@takomogolf Will you be doing any other Copper iron sets in the 101 or 101T? Needs those in my life.
Great test and explanation Mr Tim. How fast is your normal 7 iron swing?

Have the 101t, 7 iron is 170-175 for me. Usually stops dead after landing or goes forward a foot or 2

I’d love to see the yardage differences on drivers with the same swing speed but changing loft of the face. 9, 10.5, 12 or maybe even .5 between them
Which club is most similar to the P 790?All the way around?Feel, workability etc.
18 yards of rollout with a 7iron! How do you land it on the green and still hold it?

4500 spin on most of these 7 irons?
150 carry is pretty short for a 7i carry these days. Less speed=less spin. It's simple as that. 170 carry would be in the 6s in the 301s I'd imagine.
My son plays to a 10 hndcp and hits his 101t 7 iron about 180 yds
I can hit my ping for 7 iron 175 yd. I'm 72 swing speed around 84 with a 7 iron That being said , my mazuno mp 30s is around 155 yards..
Man it’s hard to throttle down a higher speed player. 150 carry with 18 yards of run out is a weird shot for 7i
Damn I picked that number before even listening to the video go me pat on the back
I would say 75 I hit my 7 iron 182 am I swing speed is right around $101 to 103 with my 7-iron
