  • A "spineless, deeply violent" man who murdered and sexually assaulted a woman as she walked home from a night out in London has been jailed for a minimum of 38 years in a televised sentencing in the UK.
    35-year-old law graduate Zara Aleena was killed by 29-year-old Jordan McSweeney.
    McSweeney had only recently been released from prison prior to the attack last June and refused to enter the courtroom for the sentencing.
    The judge's sentencing remarks were broadcast on TV in the UK.

    It is puzzling why this man is being treated rather more leniently than say Wayne Couzans (the killer of Sarah Everard who has been told he will - literally - never be released ). Also : why does he have the "choice" to not attend court to hear his sentencing and face his accusers / legal authorities - we really do pussy-foot around with these people....

      Just get real! I'm at just bringing up points in this scumbag's life were some intervention may of avoided this awful crime and what am I being hit with, 'killer sympathiser' and 'death penalty'- Do you really think the death penalty is ever going to be used in this country? What the hell is wrong with all of you? And one other thing, I replied yesterday to someone who thinks that Couzens should be released one day instead of McSweeney and I SAID neither should ever be. And when I mentioned the possibility of some sort of intevention for McSweeney, that was to be in his teens to early twenties, I fully acknowledge he can't be rehabilitated NOW, really I never believed in rehabilitation from prison. Go tell the person who would like Couzens out of prison because he was a cop, NOT ME!

    This guy got sentenced 38 years as a MINIMUM. Meaning no early parole. I see lots of comments saying he shouldn't get 4 years off his sentence for pleading guilty.
    What you need to understand is that it takes a LOT less of everyone's time (or money) if someone pleads guilty meaning that guilty pleas are ideal in convictions. If you don't offer some sort of incentive to guilty pleas, there is no point pleading guilty and whilst it may seem unfair to reward a criminal for honesty, it makes everything a lot smoother and costs less.

    • @tomsdottir
      @tomsdottir Рік тому +3

      Yes, but the point you're missing is that often they plead guilty to a lesser crime than the one they'd be charged with if they refused to plead guilty.
      The drug addict who murdered my disabled, elderly father pled guilty to culpable homicide and got 7 years. He had been arrested on multiple occasions before that for attacking and robbing elderly and vulnerable victims, so he was already used to pleading guilty and doing what he is currently doing: getting out early and reoffending.
      Victims and their families know all too well that in far too many cases the accused is allowed to cop a plea just because the CPS or PF is under-resourced and they just don't have the time to do the jobs they're supposed to be doing.
      Bribing criminals to let the police and courts off from doing their jobs is not something to see as a win.

    • @kevinshanahan6064
      @kevinshanahan6064 Рік тому

      Spot on.
      There was no plea bargain just mitigation for a guilty plea for the reasons you outlined so well.
      There is a widely held view pleading guilty to manslaughter is a plea bargain. We don’t do plea bargains as a defendant needs to persuade through his team there is sufficient doubt to a murder conviction.
      There was no opportunity here if the accused had intended to commit at least GBH. Of course if you commit GBH and your victim dies, it’s murder. You take your victim as you find him is the maxim in all cases.

    • @KootFloris
      @KootFloris 6 місяців тому

      The trouble with this incentive (not talking about this case) is that too many innocents are pleading guilty, rather than get framed by the police (who with tunnel vision may 'help' the evidence a bit) and then may sit way longer. So police score with 'solved' cases, but estimations go up to 15%-25%, which is haunting.

    When you hear 'life sentence'... you expect that that person will be held in prison for the remainder of that persons life. 38 years seems like a bit a cop out considering he was following multiple women for opportunity, while on license, And then having found one vulnerable enough, he violates her and kicks her to death. He should be locked away for a lot longer as should the person or persons who deemed him fit to be out on license. Clearly the guy's a menace,

      Actually rape and sexual assault are different.
      Sexual assault can be physically sexual but without penetration.
      Rape is with penetration.
      However its weird that this judge did use the word rape then later on said sexual assault.
      She even said sexual assault at end of hearing.
      So maybe there was no rape. No penetration. Maybe he didnt get the chance to commit becos he killed her first.

    LIFE SHOULD MEAN LIFE. The Americans have it right, we here in the UK don't. It's ILLOGICAL to say '"Life imprisonment" say, when, for example a 20 year old deliberately goes out and kills a few people, gets caught, goes through a trial and gets life of what, 40 odd years, DOES THAT MEAN he will 'Naturally die at 60 odd years old? NO. LIFE SHOULD MEAN THAT! Once trialled, convicted and sentenced to 'Life imprisonment', you SHOULD BE IN TIL YOU DIE IN PRISON.
    We SHOULD ALSO make prisons what they are MEANT TO BE, a DETERRENT! Three square meals, bed, toilet/washing facilities, exercise and a form of work (the old chain gang thing helped clean/maintain roads back in the day in the USA) and maybe a library for learning/to pass the time... AND NO MORE!
    At the moment people in care homes (who have paid TAXES for MOST of their lives seem to be cared for worse than the 'Holiday Camps' we call, ahem, 'Prisons'. To the point of (if you can remember this) one prisoner here in UK complained "His mattress hurt his back" so... The Govt gave him £10,000 compensation!!! There are MANY other things like this that just DO NOT ADD UP to punishment.
    IT'S CALLED CAUSE AND EFFECT!!
    The cause is YOU BREAK THE LAW, the effect is YOU (SHOULD) GO TO A PLACE that denies you of the niceties/luxuries/finaries/freedoms of being 'Outside and free'...
    For FAR TOO LONG we in the UK have gone FAR TOO SOFT on people who have committed crimes/serious crimes. The deterrents ARE SIMPLY NONE EXISTENT!
    I could list a lot of things that could help reduce crime, but, softies and 'Do gooders' won't allow it and so we have questions like...
    How many rapes were there a year?
    How many violent (gun and knife) crimes were there a year?
    How many murders (including multliple) were there a year?
    How many youngsters/teens were committing crimes on other peoples properties/other people/other kids?
    back in the 50's/60's/70's etc
    Now..
    How many rapes are there a week?
    How many violent (gun and knife) crimes are there a week?
    How many murders (including multiple) are there a week?
    How many youngsters/teens are committing crimes on other peoples properties/other people/other kids a week?
    BECAUSE over the decades we have become too soft, too liberal too - "They are simply misunderstood", too weak.
    RESPECT and DISCIPLINE AND THE MEANING OF THOSE WORDS have been lost over time!

      I have called the police because I could hear the woman upstairs being beaten up. They came 4 hours later. It was terrifying. Listening to it and waiting. If a drunk woman in east London calls the police saying she's being followed I very much doubt the police are coming quickly enough to prevent a murder. I say this as a woman that has been drunk in east London many times. Look at rape conviction rates. The women that didn't call the police were being realistic. The only thing they could have done to change this outcome is to murder him first.

And I came to this conclusion after the cop as he seems to have a good amount of wisdom for things like this. He said that had 28 previous convictions so he's been in jail a long time despite his age and with that he feel he was capable of doing what he ended up doing. The Justice System has to learn that young offenders to be engaged with to prevent from doing future crimes, not just throwing them in prison as a way to straighten them out.
