  • Listening to the sound of the steam whistle of the DELTA QUEEN for most of her fans brings back great memories as well as the desire for her to return to the river so everyone can again listen to these familiar sounds: the whistle, the bell, the calliope …
The famous singer, song writer and riverboat pilot John Hartford in his song “Delta Queen Waltz” praised the DELTA QUEEN’s whistle for her “deep, mellow sound” - and that’s what we all remember when we hear a recording of the steam whistle of the DELTA QUEEN.
Today’s whistle on the DELTA QUEEN most likely is the original Lukenheimer whistle, while the Delta Queen around 1950 for a while had the old whistle from the HOMER SMITH, later renamed CHRI GREENE.
In the video you’ll also hear the bell of the DELTA QUEEN. Her bell was made by the Kaye Co., Louisville and was originally on the Anchor Line’s sidewheeler CITY OF ST. LOUIS, built by the Howard Shipyard at Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1883.
You’ll find more information about the whistle, bell and also the calliope of the Delta Queen at steamboats.org: www.steamboats...
I recommend watching the video to the end - you’ll probably recognize some familiar faces …
