Max Frank caught up with Aaron Turner, Brian Cook, and Nick Yacyshyn of SUMAC at their show at Saint Vitus Bar, to talk about the band's current touring rigs, and how they differ from what the members use in ISIS, Old Man Gloom, Russian Circles, and Baptists.

Nick: "So, these drums are broken as fuck but i could play on pots and pans and still sound like an avalanche. So it's cool."
Aaron: I've been playing guitar for a really long time. I'm very picky about what I use. I use all this super specific guitar stuff because I like its sound and I have a bromance with the guy who makes it.
Brian: This is my bass, I use a couple effects for shenanigans, this is a bass amp.
Nick: Here's some Drums, half of it's Broken.
there's not much you can say about your drums, really.
Dude: drumheads, tuning, kit measures...
20 years of playing in bands I've met a lot of great players that were super picky and just as many that couldn't care less.
I hope this drummer was joking. "That's a legacy ride, and i forget what the top one is" .....it's written right on it.
Yeah, given Brain's pedalboard with russian circles I was surprised with how simple his rig is here.
Man's an existing legend
which one tho
Aaron Turner of course
@@coolhammas nah all of ‘em
@@cactus-mcjacktus w comment, these guys understand what good music is. They know how to take their craft seriously!
@@ilay829 cheers!
"I can pretty much live with this and a good head."
-Aaron Turner (2016)
getting good head makes life tolerable indeed
Birmingham native here: The Bottletree is in Birmingham, AL, not Atlanta, GA. We don't have much; give us this.
Amen. I miss that place
Your about to have the company that makes there guitars. There moving....away....from my home town...
Yeah I'm from Atlanta; moved to Baltimore in 2010&was not at all recognizing that name(bottletree), so I appreciate that.
14:40, the sound everyone needs in their lives
hahahhaha you got me
Saw them in SF, great show. As an owner of 2 EGC's I can say it's very hard for me to justify buying wood guitars....they're just so resonate and feel alive when you play them.
louderthangod what about Travis bean style wood with aluminum neck?
great video! Thanks Gear Gods for posting it!
Seen Isis on a tiny stage in Ireland. Got absolutely fucked on Tequilas and pretty sure I annoyed them between each song. You live and learn. It's was like 12 years ago to be fair.
I was probably at that show. Met both Aarons after. Super nice guys.
Unreal show.
@@adhamhocaoimh I woke feeling like we ruined the whole show so if you can't remember that's good 😅
Turner spends 15+ mins on explaining is guitars, then at the end Nick comes in and says these are my drums, some of the cymbal's are broken.
FRYETTE is also used by Page Hamilton of HELMET, good enough for me
Aaron had been using VHT/Fryette Pitbull Ultra Lead when he was in Isis, as well
This is so great. Thx for this episode :)
Love the Sad Vicious shirt those guys are so funny
Where are your tone woods now?!
It's kinda the same point, materials matter
Construction matters more than what woods are used, like set neck vs bolt on. But you can notice subtle differences between woods when played clean. If you're just going to play with any amount of overdrive, it's negligible.
Electronics. Pickups. Effects. Or use an acoustic.
Isis is one of my favorite bands, their record Panopticon IMO is top 5 ever, beautiful record. his amp at the time was fryette pitbull ultra lead guitar was fender telecaster deluxe
I like that they are gracious for there gear that's rock n roll
EGC-major T-Bean influence--same body shape on the lucite plus the more obvious aluminum neck.
They look a lot like these old Armstrong acrylic guitars.
Premium beard scratching ASMR at 14:41
I love egc and I play my standard religiously
sumac or sumaq in Quechua ethnic language of Perú, meaning Beauty, exquisite, charm, etc.
"ethnic language", Quechua is a language, period.
Q. When Sumac goes out to dinner, who pays? A. No one.
looks like a 14x6.5 ludwig supraphonic snare
when he says "the bottle tree," i wonder if he means bottle tree in birmingham, alabama bc that place although gone now was the type of place to host isis
Yeah those dudes go so many places I bet it all gets blurred.
A question regarding two amp setup and Strymon Deco pedal. As I understand then he uses ( in this case) Orange amp as main distortion and it also goes to other side to Fryette poweramp. So how can you connect Strymon Deco pedal for that doubling effect he talks about. In what part of chain would it fit in
He may have the Deco running between the preamp out of the Orange and the input of the power amp? Idk not very clear on his end tbh
I believe he runs the deco in between the main amps send then into the power amp . So as best as I can tell the deco feeds out then into a volume pedal he uses to fade the second amp in and out
No Isis jokes thank god that's getting old
YES!!!
EGC where is the signature model?!?!?!?! I'm on your site in 2019 and there's no Aaron Turner signature!!!!!!
Looks like it's the King Buzzo model.
@@riccso all hail
@@riccso no, it isn't. Aaron plays a 27.5" baritone with an acrylic body, whereas Buzz plays a 24.75" scale guitar with an aluminum body.
@@grandtheftautocj At the time of my comment there was no Aaron Turner model on their site and the King Buzzo was acrylic. It's been indeed updated since. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyone else notice how odd the settings were on Aaron's Dual Dark head? Treble and mids on like 3?
What's weird about that?
EGC’s are bright, Orange amps have tons of mids. 🤷🏼♂️
Finally.
thrilling
I think BottleTree is in NC or AL, not GA
Pretty sure I heard We Care Alot by Faith No More
I wish Nick Sadler from Daughters would do one of these Rig videos but now with all of these allegations flying around and the band on hiatus I doubt it will ever happen.
Hi I'm a bass player and I like to squat my 8x10
Of course as soon as I make enough cash to afford an Aaron Turner signiture egc they’re impossible to find.
Check used markets, vintage boutique guitar shops, or write to the company directly, no need to be shy
There were some people over there doing stuff and some other people said hey you should be doing that stuff and people should know this is my stuff and I'm going to do the stuff I want the other people said you really really shouldn't be doing that stuff
I have a question: what is an high output/low gain pick up? It seems an oxymoron to me!
emilio torreggiani I think he meant it had wide frequency response but was low output gain wise kind like those 70’s pickups on the Tele deluxe.
3 YEARS LATE but, it has to do with the amount of gain you get out of the pickups alone, like single coils and p90s have a lot lower output than humbuckers and so on
Fuckng hell this guy likes giving his life story
Rigged Man
Never understood how musos can have no idea about the gear they're using. Baffles me...
Hmm after watching more he seems to know more than he let's on. Not sure why he made that comment at the start
Ham Kent maybe it was the drummer haha
Im on this boat. I have a lot of high end gear but know very little about the technical aspects of them. All I need to know is that it sounds like what I need it to sound.
Awesome great guy without another guitarist to hide behind kind of scary that's great! ha EGC is #1 on wish list but probably never happen ehh $$$ wood bee killer to build Warmoth jazzcaster swamp Ash body with an aluminum electric guitar company neck ahh 9.5 radius... Old Soul Cabs from friend company and heads I can't afford as I gave up wanting or sunn Model T at least three bands had done in my town coming up and the sickest 435 tube amp I ever had that was super rare I kick myself for giving away for nothing
Wanna see pedal board for ISIS ahh , that ditto is definitely on my list Keeley Caverns EarthQuaker Sunn one and meris hedra plus couple fuzz , nothing there with gain or overdrive besides what's in the fuzz pedals must just get it right from the head and the pickups but he said they were low gain hmm
18:40 WE CARE A LOT
So good, I florped my glorp
Those cymbals are completely fucked hahaah
what the fuck jeans
you should do polyphia
Legend
Tj miller in ten years later.
You hear Aaron talk about his approach to music and gear, and then you remember that Rihanna sings some bullshit into the microphone and earns millions of dollars. Yes, the world is fair.
Rhianna is actually talented buti get what you mean
yeah I kinda noticed that Rihanna's rapping skill is pretty solid but, like, there are a lot of worse pop stars who really can't even provide anything interesting to the pop world
The two are so vastly different it really doesn't make sense to compare them, you sound silly.
@@mschell8022 I sound silly? Well, it's still music
@@Abrahamhamham His set up isn't even all that complex when its compared to other musicians in the same genre as him
thank your parents every day for those crappy guitars. they saved up & bought something for you & your passion.
imagine caring what aaron turner thinks
I had no idea Aaron Turner was so boring
Did you expect him to be growling the whole time?
how's being articulate boring?
I had no idea people could be bothered to post such useless comments
Your comment is three years old, but my god I’d love for you to elaborate although I am nobody as you should also have the same realization in comparison to Aaron Turner and his accomplishments.
@@kbharris5820 I didn't question his music, he's not a higher power either. Nick is an absolutely phenomenal drummer on the other hand.
