Jaguar iPace -- Review

  • I've been lucky enough to have a Jaguar I-Pace for the last 9 days to get a real feel for range, efficiency, build and overall performance. II have to say, I'm impressed overall, but feel theres a few points the new electric Jag should be on top of coming in to the EV market with the competition now so tough, and it's not getting any easier. Join me while I put the I-Pace through it's paces and see if it's worthy of trading in our beloved Model S.....

    JLR have really done a great job brining this car to market so quickly.....every other (main stream) manufacturer are just dragging their feet. Had a test drive last week in the HSE spec. Would have it over the Tesla 100%. The good thing that people are missing here is...... there are now enough ev's for people to start having personal preference. On my test drive, had the extra Jag noise switched on, brilliant!

    As an avid EV fan and a Tesla owner I really want the I-Pace to be a success and to be embraced by both JLR and the owners. This review had a promising start and a bit of a downer end. Remember, this is the expensive First Edition, better-priced options are to follow.

    If you were a couple without a child I'd say go for the Jag cause it def looks like a better choice for luxury and driving experience. But seems the car you own has more space and doesn't need too much care if your child spills or kicks a surface. Just a thought.

    Just an FYI. I had 4 cars (one Volvo v70 and 3 BMW5 combi’s) with pale interior and leather seats. I have kids and haul around quite some stuff for my job. Never had issues with them getting dirty. It’s leather, so easy to clean. And it gives so much more a feeling of space. If you like it, go for it, don’t let your practical concerns get in the way!

    Great review, good work! Impressive design and engineering, but I just couldn't live with that terrible energy economy. It's not just the range, it's also the fact that it's since using more energy it will obviously take more time to charge at any given charging rate than a more efficient ev.

    • @GlynHudson
      @GlynHudson 5 років тому +2

      @John Weatherley This is correct, however, my point was charging an I-pace or a Tesla as the same rate will result in the Tesla getting more range since 1kW added to a Tesla will increase range by about 3 miles but the same energy added to an ipace will only give you about 2 miles. At most charging locations the ipace will currently be limited to 50kWh charging max, usually about 45kW in reality. It's true this will change in the future but the ionity super fast DC chargers are a long way off begin widely available.

    • @GlynHudson
      @GlynHudson 5 років тому +2

      John Weatherley jealous! Enjoy. Don't get me wrong; I do think it's a stunning vehicle, beautifully engineered. If it helps get more people into EV's that can only be a good thing. It's still the most efficient Jag ever made by a long way! Hopefully, it will push charging networks to deploy more rapid 'rapid' chargers.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  5 років тому +1

      Interestingly the iPace has been tested at 350kW charging speeds so, fingers crossed, this will happen in future revisions. If they could get the DC down some that would certainly help for sure. Glyn, love the camper, I want to convert one myself, I'm on the look out now 👍🏻

      That's a shame, as the Kona is excellent, but Hyundai weren't making a profit on the car before the price hike so maybe now they are. However, there are alternatives, and were almost at the point of changing, so many options, it's getting tough 🙄

    Another great review guys. I think Jaguar need to do better. I'm not saying it won't sell, the demo-graph this is aimed at will probably have an S or X, and this will be used as a second car for the school run! It will be the new Chelsea Tractor. Most 'normal' buyers will just see £84K and sub 200 mile range and want more for the money, may be holding out for a high end Audi or Merc?
    Me? Well we are already a 2 EV household with only one more to go BUT, I need to tow over 2 tonne so will be holding out for a Bollinger B1 or equivelant.....(in my dreams). Seriously I can't go 100% EV until something like that is available.

    I liked the style of this review. The Jaguar is more of a conventional luxury car that should appeal to the greatest number of people. Personally, I prefer my Model 3, because I am more of a technology person. I love having almost everything controlled by the center screen, because Tesla can constantly improve and change whatever they want to. Many other people can't stand that center screen and they think that the car looks cheap without lot of buttons and screens. I would like to see Tesla offer more luxury features on their higher end models. I'd love it if Tesla offered cooled seats on the Model 3, but you have to move upmarket for that option. I don't even know if Tesla has brought back cooled seats, because they had problems with the leather wearing improperly with all of the perforations.
    Do you give any preference to cars built in England? I like to support local businesses, like Tesla, because I live only an hour from the Fremont factory.

    I am really amazed at the range (or lack of) of the Jag. One of our vehicles is a BMW i3 with the 33KWh battery which gets approximately 140 miles around town (usually under 50 mph max). I just did an out and back highway trip of 120 miles at a steady 65 mph and still had 9 miles left in the battery (7% remaining on the Guess-o-Meter). As much as I really love the i3, I wouldn't consider it to be an extremely aero design, so what is the Jag's problem?
    Because of lack of charge points in the US, I still feel that the best option currently for long trips in the US is our 2014 Volt. By the time the Jag will be available in our area, I hope they have improved the range because I definitely would purchase one. Not a fan of the spartan interior of the M3 and the X is too big and not that great on range either.

    The funny thing is with the Jag. It’s less efficient and needs the supercharger network more than the actual Tesla does. I love the quality of the i-Pace. Sadly I’ve not driven one yet. But I will be sometime soon I’m sure. Can’t get enough of test driving EV’s. I like the ride height of the Jag but I love the upgradable software features with the Tesla. It’s a very tough decision as you say. A blend of both cars would be lovely in the ideal world. Let’s hope Tesla & Jag Watch this video and learn from it.

      Just to add. The poor efficiency would be a deal breaker for me. 180 to 220 (real world miles) out of a 90kwh pack is poor. It almost feels like all that extra cost of the battery is wasted. Feels to me more like the range of a 50kwh pack really.

      Thanks Mark, it was a great episode to make and we genuinely had an awesome time with the car. A much better driver's car. You will love it if you like driving. The extra downforce, wider tyres, steering weight and feel and stiffer chassis all make it worthwhile to get the most from the instant acceleration and traction. Safer too if you need to brake or change direction quickly. Like any more expensive car - you are paying for quality, looks and handling. If it were purely a decision from logic the Tesla would win. From the heart the jag would win. Most car enthusiasts choose from the heart. A to B drivers from the brain. That said, the higher voltage helps charging times. The I-pace does live updates to software as well as Tesla.

    I am due to have a TD in the i-Pace soon, but I suspect that the even with the air suspension in a Tesla is not as smooth and coomforting as that of the JLR product. My MX is noticeably more choppy and harsh riding than my 13 plate range rover that I swapped for the MX. The issue with the JLR is the range and JLRs ability to provide good aftersales care the way that Tesla has done. Quite like the iPace but having spent a couple of months in our Kona I would still go for the Kona. It's all about the rapids. Spending 45 minutes on a rapid is bearable on a longer trip but putting the same number of miles back in an iPace would be nearly double that and that's the deal-breaker. A widespread network of faster rapids would help but that's got to be 2 or 3 years away in the UK. Such a shame it's not very efficient. Good review thanks.

    Great review. Very informative, although it’s 2022 when I am viewing this and the ipace has had some updates. I am thinking of buying a used HSE and don’t do long journeys. Something you said I think is probably true, that with the I pace when paying so much for a car you would feel you got value for money with the I pace, especially with the oyster leather seats. Also you get as standard a tracker fitted and emergency buttons and also if the airbags go off the emergency services are called with your location. But I loved your relaxed and objective review.

    Handles aren't from Tesla; they're a Land Rover item - they're basically the same as the ones from the F-Type which have been used for years...
    Transmission tunnel is structural.
    I get a range of over 400Km, freeway speeds, A/C on - you have the old software version. Try the new one for the regen - much better post-update. As is the range.
    That motor 'whine' is artificial - you can turn it off...
    I-Pace is cheaper here, by a long way... and the Tesla charging network is far worse here in Oz than the alternatives.
    Very interesting to get such detailed (& balanced) feedback from Tesla owners. Model S styling has already dated BTW...
    I bought the I-Pace. Much better fit & finish.
    Much better car to drive.

    It's a great video ngl, but why does jaguar let everyone review an i-pace while they STRUGGLE to deliver them to actual buyers. My dad's i-pace for example was 3 weeks late!
    And my dad's colleague's jaguar i-pace still hasn't showed up, so that's about 7 weeks now?

    I do strongly believe that anyone able to afford an £86k car can afford to pay the extra four or five thousand that the government grant covers. Absolutely ridiculous in my eyes. Anyway, the 'transmission tunnel' is possibly designed to increase body rigidity to help give a better, sportier feeling, similar to a backbone. That's one of the reasons that FWD ICEV still have them (other than providing a useful route for the exhaust). I wouldn't bother with a built-in sat-nav given how superior the likes of Google Maps are. Just run it through Apple Car Play or Android Auto. The foot operated boot is a very useful addition but JLR should have provided the ability to close the boot the same way, rather than having to lift your hand and press a button. (Clearly needs to have a sensor to detect that you have stepped away from under the tailgate before operating).

    How does the real world range compare with your Model S? The recent WhatCar real range test which I think is completely wrong said the I-Pace was 253 miles and the Tesla Model S 75D was 203 miles. They only drove each 38.7 miles with a full charge and then extrapolated from there.

    This car has amazing stats but is missing the "executive" look that will get it on company car purchase orders, and that's what really counts. There's a reason all German saloons like similar from the outside, and Jag should have stuck with that basic template. At first glance it looks like the ugliest Volvo ever made, the notorious Volvo C30... Also barely enough space in the boot for a set of golf clubs, are you even trying anymore Jaguar?

    As more folks get EVs a few things will come to light...
    most ev buyers now were not big lux sedan or sports car or grand touring type motor enthusiast so they do not see the value in expensive options when they order.
    performance for speed. upgrade to long range which provides the option for on demand textended travel. air ride suspension.
    these are not things most involved in commute type driving are typically exposed to.
    the ipace is not set up to be particularly utilitarian and having a young child is definately that! so a young child for a commuring couple this is not the ev for...
    the public is hung up on range but do not understand this yet. 98% of all folk in great britian go 45 or less miles per day. so most of the evs for sale will suffice. BUT...
    truth is most legacy ev mfrs are using bat tech that is not very effecient and degrades over the life of the car. addl only tesla alloes you to upgrade the car by wifi rather than having to buy a whole new vehicle. plus most configs in the dash info etc that a car co may have now tesla can incl with said software update soonish.
    then tesla has the supercharger network...and is at least 5 years ahead of where any legacy car mfr can get to on several important fronts.
    then there is thr perception of tesla vs...this somply does not exist! yrsla can sell three x the amount of cars it can possibly produce maxed out and there is still only half the demand gor ev cars which is growing expedentially. lower end cheapo commuters...high end luxury cruisers...
    tesla is going after market segments that are large yet very specific. jaguar does sell much to them but big vs buzz in the media all cuz jag is only product to compare...and better woild be X owners not an S without air suspension...shows you are not really the "fit" for either in terms of $100k vehicle expectancy. go roll in a used bentley...in usa can get a ten year old one for $50k. still feels like you OWN the bank when you drive it! that mindset is what Ipace is after. that buyer has a boat not a baby. they go to f1 races. they have a chef and a personal trainer. they buy brands not bargains. get tge idea.
    all people are not alike. this is a misnomer. you would never want my chevy corvette nor see the practicality of it...that it goes 150 mph out the box and needs little mainenence and will go 200k miles no prob and look good the entire time all for $15k not four or more times that.
    advise you look into model 3 as this seems more like a better fit for your lifestyle. it wont compete with jag or new bmw or porcshe or audi or even vw products when they come out in nxt few years. it will still be FAST so that hidden pleasure is tgere plus the tech performance will have user capability xars trice its orice wont have.
    keep posting vids but do some research on what is really going on in a vastly changing market. yes you can are yourself with what anf why and when and how and ehat all this means. bc a LOT of mis info will fly and consumers will be duped as car co sell stuff they KNOW tesla has better prodicts than b ut decide as long as they are not revealed to let it ride.
    our best ploy is a widely connected and informed oublic sharing our experiences and increasing our aggregate IQ.
    thanks for the vid. for what you did good job! your kid will look back as an adult at the days of the car dino when ice still existed and evs were not tge only thing on the road...cars? mom what are cars? granny drove them. I saw her video... you mean they didnt just FLY? that's within her lifetime...

    Remember this is an SUV and your Tesla isn't. Every vehicle is a compromise in one way or another. If you're going to do miles and miles you wouldn't use an SUV anyway. Basically I use an SUV so a Tesla S would be ruled out purely because its more of a road car.

    180 miles isn't great but not to bad either. The issue I have is if doing long distance you will only be charging to 80% which is 144 miles. Then you won't be running it down to 0% before needing to recharge so range would be even less than that

    What's interesting about this is the i-pace is basically a track car. lots of power quick but recharge times are slow. when this car you are driving comes down to a sensible price in 5 years, there will be much better cars with much longer range for less money. Nice to see Kate back giving her point of view and what seems to be a new 2 thumb gesture. it would be good to get an idea of battery loss leaving the cars unused foe 2 weeks, to see how well battery cars will deal with long periods of not beiing used.

    Guys your forgetting 1 important thing Tesla announced that all U.K. /Europe superchargers will move over to ccs to supercharge speeds will be available to other second gen ccs cars, also you didn’t mention that the car lacks anything to block the sunlight from the fixed glass roof, and rear visibility is really poor for reversing, you heavily reliant on the 360 cam and sound sensors

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  5 років тому

      Good shout, although the roof is tinted. We were going to mention the rear wiper but the S doesn't have one and causes us no issues and the rear visibility isn't actually that bad. It's not the best, but I've definitely seen loads worse. The Model X being a good example. I'm not sure these will ever be hooked up to a Tesla SC, but I'd be happy for that to happen, it would be a decoy move forward for the industry and for Jag we feel 👍🏻

    The problem is not just the range so much as the time it will take to recharge a 90kWh battery at 50kW or especially at 10amps if you don't have a dedicated charger at a destination. 20 hours perhaps on the latter - certainly not overnight.
    We've given up when seeing an ipace on an ultracharger at 30% knowing it would be on for at least another 1h and then to only get 186 miles for that time investment seems very difficult to justify.

    I always enjoy your reviews, so natural and nice that you both have different perspectives. Just imagine what it will be like when Florence is old enough to voice an opinion? The efficiency seems to be the Achiles heel of this car. It also means that charging speed is effectively slower per mile than it should be. Otherwise I really like it but it really should be capable of a genuine 300 miles for the money. It makes the Kona look like an amazing bargain (OK not a luxury car but less than half the price and more capable for longer journeys).
