Pretty much all 4runners are "bullet proof" if loved and cared for. My wife and I just got a 4th gen with the legendary 2uzfe and it's got 274'000 miles. It still runs like a dream smooth as butter. I think the 3rd gens are a little better offroad simply because they weigh alot less, but I wanted the extra room of the 4th gen and wanted modern amenities after upgrading from a 1986 Honda accord.
I have 99 limited 4wd with the rear locker. I live in south fl where ppl adore Toyotas and you do see many 3rd gens around but very few 4wd models so every time someone on a mod Toyota sees me they drool over my 4runner. I constantly find notes on my windshield.
The 99-00 limited with the fat lip & the old grill look the best in my opinion. They kinda of look like midsized fj80s. For 01-02 Toyota changed the grills design giving them a different look
@@arislopes1924 personally it has to be the early bumper on a widebody with jdm factory nudge bar. I reckon it's t's what Toyota styled the 6th gen 4runner bumper on.
The 3rd gen 4Runner is like the Jeep XJ. Both are light (slightly less than 4000#) and have a decent powertrain (3.4 V6 and 4.0 I6) for the era. Keep it light, add lockers if it doesn't have any, and easy to supercharge if needed. Parts are available and relatively cheap with tons of aftermarket options available. Overall, great vehicle.

Just picked up my 3rd gen in the beginning of this year with 160k miles, can’t wait to start modding it! Loving it so far!

i currently own 2 3rd gens 99 sr5 with 295k miles a 00 limited with 270k miles. got a 5th gen 4runner also
The pre facelift 3rd gen 4runner/surf is a very handsome machine.
