Exploring the POOREST province in Cambodia! Kampong Thom - Cambodia's less traveled gem! 🇰🇭

  • Visiting Cambodia for my first time in over a decade, I covered a lot of new ground and explored places that I previously had not. I decided to visit some areas that most tourists skip on their route through Cambodia. After a bit of research, I learned that Kampong Thom is the poorest province in Cambodia and it is also the home province of the late Khmer brutal dictator, Pol Pot.
The experience truly was surreal. I left a part of my heart on those dirt roads in rural Cambodia.

Seems like a very devout Buddhist culture. Even the poorest district they were providing the kids with lot's of entertainments and they seemed quite happy. (I guess it was during a holiday)

Interesting to hear you say at the end the motorbike freedom. I was lucky to be able to cycle through this area as part of a longer journey in 2010 on a bicycle, highly recommended. Great memories.

@@chopsticksandtrains One memory of Cambodia is that nobody tried to overcharge for water, we stopped to buy water on average maybe every 20km across the whole country (northwest to the southeast). Kind and good people.

The ending of your trip made me tell you some history about Pol Pot and Cambodia. Contrast to many books you read, Cambodia was controlled by the Vietnamese before the French. 1802, when Nguyen Phuc Anh established the Nguyen Dynasty, he made the Mandarin as the administration language of all territories under his control. two-third of Cambodia today was under the control of the Nguyen Dynasty. Every local township of Cambodia territory falling under the Vietnamese control was administrated by the Vietnamese's Mandarin. When the French tried to take more control out of the local Vietnamese Mandarin in Cambodia, the local administrator perceived their power was eroding so they waged a ten-year rebellion using prince Si Votha and Norodom Doungchak as the figure head. Pol Pot's grandfather was killed by the French's trap during this rebellion in 1886. It was Pol Pot's grandfather killed by the French that ushered his family rises to be the most trustworthy among the underground Vietnamese rebellion. With the help of the most powerful Vietnamese's Mandarin name Thiounn pronounced June, his cousin Meak was able to take controlled of all the royal palace's woman. Together, the incognito Pen, Thiounn, Kim, Khieu and Son was able to undermine the French, the Thai Poc Khun and later Sihanouk government. Whether they were Son Ngoc Minh, Son Ngoc Thanh, Saloth Sar or Saloth Chhay, all their action was to help one faction of the Vietnamese by undermining both the French and the 16 years of Sihanouk independent. Once they finally win control over Cambodia, the first thing they did was evacuating all the Vietnamese from the danger of what will become of Cambodia, and then the charade of anti-Vietnamese, then the elimination of the competitive Cambodian, then attempted to exterminate the Khmer, especially those living in the eastern Cambodia. The above story will make Ben Kiernan as the puppet of the Vietnamese and might help those capable enough to rewrite Cambodia history.
