Wow!! I think I gasped and jaw dropped at 99% of the work! I can feel the confidence and excitement each artist now has in themselves and that alone is joyful to witness. This is more than *just* an art class, this is clearly a lesson in self confidence and tapping into one’s creative ammunition. Kudos to you and your students.
Agreed! Youmdescribe it exactly right- Mostly all confident brushstrokes that mean somehting- 3ach brushmark describing something for the most part. My paintings lack that confidence for sure. You can plainly see where I overwork brushstr9kes trying too hard to describe an object or subject, or trying to get "just the right color", and I severely overwork practically everything.
Question about the closed class: *Is it an online or in person class? *if it’s in-person, will you be showing it online for a fee? *do you have a waitlist in the unlikely event that there is a cancellation? Thanks so much! Laurie
Would love to do this course, will make sure I have the money to do it next year. I love the videos as Ian gives so much information which is certainly helping me in my artistic journey. My Christmas present for next year will be easily sorted!
@@love2knit-draw-travel Hi Angela. The price is subject to change for next year, so I would recommend going on the wait list to get updated with the newest information. masteringcomposition.com/2023-course/. However, to give you an idea, the 2023 course was $449.
Oh Noooo!!! I missed the registration! Is there any waitlist for this class or anything being offered before 2024?? I love your work, your teaching style, and your videos!!
Hi Ian, I have been watching your videos and an am very excited to sign up for your course. Once I sign up, do you send the link via email? also, I am not sure if I can attend all of Saturday live sessions, but will try my best. Thanks
I'm delighted you are planning on joining us for the course. When you sign up you get a welcome email with a video and access to the course platform. All else will be explained this Saturday on the zoom call at 9 am PT. All the calls are recorded and posted before noon on Saturday so you can catch up watching the video if you can't make it. See you on Saturday. All the best
Ian, I also have a time commitment question. I’m currently taking a different art course which requires about 12-15 hours a week commitment and runs through the first 2 weeks of your class. I am unable to add more than just the Zoom participation until that’s over. Does the structure of your class allow playing ‘catch up’ in February? Or would you recommend me taking it next time instead?
Hi Patricia, well if you put 12-15 hours in you' d catch up alright. You could make the calls on Saturday morning, and then head straight into it at week 3. You'll want to of course dive in at Week 3 but I'd go back and work your way forward. You just won't get much of a break between the two courses. But I think you could do it alright if you are willing to put the same amount of time into it. Hope that answers your question. Next time won't be before this time 2024. So I guess you just have to balance it all out. I'd be delighted if you joined us of course. Best wishes.
Pretty much just paper and pencil. Specific paper and specific pencils but it is all drawing as a way to have a fluid way to explore ideas before you start to paint.
I'm thinking about joining the course but need to know the time commitment. I watched the videos but still need to know if it's daily course and how many hours a day.
Hi Marilyn, so the only live commitment is at 9 am PT on Saturday morning. But it is recorded. There are videos and exercises. Usually three lessons a week. But you could do only 1 a week and do the others after the course since you'll have access to it for a year. But I thnk 4-6 hours a week would probably do it. All, except for the zoom call if you want to be there live, on your own time. Hope that helps give you an idea. I'd be delighted if you joined us. All the best.
Ian, love your work and your teaching! Disappointed to learn your on-line class for 2023 is full. I was wondering if you have considered or would consider having a Patreon page? I am sure others besides myself would enjoy longer more in-depth videos in exchange for supporting your work. I am hungry for more!
@@shathaway13 Hi Susan, I am planning a monthly membership with long form demonstrations and live zoom calls and so on. I’m busy all this year teaching the courses but will launch that later this year or early next year. Make sure you are on my email list to find out more when we do start it. Until then all the best. masteringcomposition.com/free-bonus/
Hi Linda, good abstract paintings need to rest on a strong foundation as well. So I would say yes, it would be helpful. You would be using representational images during the course but that would train your attention to seeing in design, masses and structure. All of which are part of the language of painting whether abstract or representational.
I wrote Mastering Composition 15 years ago. I'd just say I have learnt a lot about teaching it and creating a step by step way of learning that is better than the book. I think being in a course with weekly exercises and having to keep up forces a change that a book probably can't do.
I've had the book for years and learned a lot from it, but this course and the way it is delivered is OTT. Two things set this course apart : 1)The way Ian has broken things down into achievable steps is genius. It's all bite sized pieces that make you feel challenged but not overwhelmed. 2) the feedback from peers and learning to analyse the work of others is priceless. Where else can you immerse yourself in a community of like minded individuals who are all on the same page? The book is wonderful, but the course is the best course of any sort that I have taken. Ian is a gifted and generous teacher.
beautiful works!!!
