While Freya will never experience life in the wild, she has found safety and sanctuary at Drakenstein. The park also cares for other lions with heartbreaking backstories, including Ares, who was blind and neglected, and Brutus, who suffered severe abuse.
Pi’s Relocation from Lebanon: Another lion cub named Pi, rescued from an illegal pet owner in Lebanon, found safety in South Africa. Distressing videos showed Pi being exploited for selfies and petting on the streets of Lebanon. Thankfully, Pi now resides in a true sanctuary, away from such exploitation.
These stories highlight the efforts made to protect these majestic animals, even as South Africa grapples with contradictory practices-conservation efforts alongside a thriving captive lion business. While sanctuaries like Drakenstein provide hope, there’s still work to be done to end the breeding of lions for petting, canned hunting, and the lion bone trade.
