- What’s up everybody. In todays video, I will be showing you how I upgraded my stock handlebars on my 2016 Street Glide Special to custom 16” ape hangers from start to finish. This is a long video but I wanted to show you all a step by step of what I did. This took me a good 6-8 hours of work total. I am not a professional mechanic and this was the first time doing this big of a project by myself. The goal is to show you all that you do not have to be a mechanic to do this yourself. Just take your time, have faith in yourself, and follow along.

Hey man, just want to say what an awesome job you done. Description of everything you did looked/was simple, easy to understand and follow and really well videoed. I have watched a shit load of videos on YT but yours would have been the best. Well done man and much appreciated.
I just ordered a 16" meathook handlebars and cause of your step by step video and every detail that you explained. I will do it myself. Thank you brother 🙏
I've done a lot of my own work on my bikes, cam chain tensioners on my Fatboy were a pain in the ass, putting 16's on it wasn't so bad. This job didn't seem too bad either, but hell I guarantee filming and editing this video was a monumental task. Nice job man.
It was definitely a lot of work. I don’t mind it though, as even if one person is helped by any of my videos, it’s worth it to me.
Great video, thanks for the attention to detail on bleeding the brakes and clutch. Best video I've seen on changing the bars!
Thanks, I wanted to try to help others feel confident doing it themselves.
Good shit bro. Thank you for this video. Everything step by step. You just saved a lot money for a lot of people willing to do the work..
Thanks a lot 🙏 it was a lot of work making this video.
Great video!
Thanks I have a '16 street glide and harley installed my bars and they're slapping back a year and a half later. I'm going to redo it myself
Thanks for the video. ordered all the parts and will be doing myself. Different bars but this video will help. Helped me sound smart with the parts guy on the phone.
all done! thanks again for the video!
Just curious. About how many times did you have to empty your pump reservoir?
Every handle bar video should include the riders height and a side shot of them on the bike holding the bars
I appreciate this bro.u just showed me that I am not even attempting this, haha
Just came across your video. Awesome step by step tutorial. Your attention to detail and in depth explanation is awesome.
Keep up the great work. I subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your past and future content. 👍
Thank you 🙏
i’m currently shopping around for 16” apes for my ‘16 street glide special. i’m leaning toward dropping the extra $ for a prewired set. that way i only need to extend the clutch and brake lines…
Matt, thanks for all the detail and time u put into this video! I have a 16 Street glide special, and about to do 14 inch bars with heated grips, I was going to do chrome however the black looks good with the black inner fairing,
Thanks, Sean
Thanks 🙏 it was definitely a long video to film and edit but the goal was to help other people to do it themselves.
Is this all necessary for pre wired bars? And are the extensions for clutch and brake required?
All I can say I'm def buying pre wired bars for sure
Lol I hear you brother. It’s not fun wiring them yourself.
Great video and thank you. Wondering a bit why instead of grinding on the windshield, would you not loosen the clamps on the bars and pull them back an inch? I know it is a bit of work to do after having put it all back together but I might have left that grinder alone.
At first I wanted my bars as far forward as possible. After putting a new extended seat on and adding the dash storage pockets, I actually did loosen the two front clamp bolts and pulled my bars forward an inch lol. We live and learn I guess 👊🏼
broke wires... tip from JP guys is to put a light coat of grease on them before sliding though bars and they slide though easy
Curious how you bled the brake line going to the ABS module?
Good job on the bars. What kind of windshield is that.. Memphis Shades? Do you find it hard to see?
I don’t remember the brand windshield, but I am a taller rider so the windshield only came up to my nose so I looked over it not through it.
@@DieselLegianceI'm 5'11 and going 16. I did have a fat boy with 14s on a 2 in riser. Your video made want it on my SG w/ 12s. Should've went 16 from the start. You motivated me to go back😁
Nice 👊🏼 Ride Safe
Great video but man I wish you had put some caveat in there when you released your ignition cylinder saying how you did it incorrectly
Yeah, I forgot about that, but basically when I disconnected the ignition lock, I turned my wheel and locked it out, so I had to take my whole ignition assembly out and manually adjusted, which I have a separate video for that
Ohhh gotcha ok. Thanks man. Again, great video. Way more than what I was expecting to do to add bars to my kid’s street glide but oh well… the things we do 🤣
Excellent video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great video. How tall is your windshield?
I believe it was a 10” aftermarket windshield
Great video. Clear, thorough, very informative. One quick question though, did you consider pre-wired bars? Seems like it might be worth the $ to not have to slice and fish wires...
Yes I have considered but they cost about $200 more depending on the brand. It’s cheaper to splice yourself.
@@DieselLegiance fair enough. I'm getting ready to order them and I think I'm going to drop the extra $$ on the pre-wired. Figure I'm saving time and a few bucks on the extensions. I'm sure I'll be using your video for reference. Thanks again bro. Stay safe
@Diesel Legiance Just finished up putting 14" bars on my '16. One quick question, what is the second plug on the throttle twist sensor for? I didn't note where it went before unplugging, now I'm not sure if it was plugged in at all. Everything works as it should, even the cruise control
It may be for heated grips?
@@DieselLegiance I checked some harley forums, and it looks like you might be right with the heated grips thing
Did you have to have the abs module flashed afterwards or was it a non issue?
No issue with mine…
Thanks for the video. Installing my 16” meat hooks on my 16 Streetglide special today. FYI, I did not have to loosen the exhaust. Saw some guys do that on other videos.
I did not either but good luck and ride safe
Can you send link for 16" cable kit like yours sir
I believe this one for ABS models amzn.to/3WL6I0B and this one for NON-ABS models amzn.to/3SsPtOY or try this link www.burlybrand.com/product/36/black-cable-kits-for-baggers/8152
Very good video thanks
Would this work for a 2014 street slide special.
Should 👍🏼
What’s the point of the tank lift? This is the first I’ve heard of it.
It’s just something I like. I allows a little more view of the top of the engine. It also lifts the tank a little higher above my knees since I am tall. As a tall rider, when my knees are taller than the tank it feels and looks awkward.
Funny to see the tank dash taken off for no actual reason
I wanted to show a full detailed install. Yes, there may be “quicker” or “easier” ways but I still got the job done. Appreciate the support though.
Where did you find that heat shrink kit
I get them from Amazon. I use them all the time. amzn.to/3k9aFrP
Everything besides cutting the windshield was good. That windshield needs to go anyways. Klockwerks or lrs time
After several rides I ended up pulling the bars towards me anyways which created more space so I didn’t need to cut the windshield but oh well, we live and we learn.
Liked and subbed.
Thanks man.
No need to pull console. Unplug harness
Bro this is literally ridiculous all ghis for some damn bars
I get it. I went extremely thorough for this install video but a bar swap can be done a little easier than this. Or, you can pay probably $600+ in labor plus the bars and extension kit to have someone else do it.
You can realign it with a flathead screwdriver that was a lot of work for nothing
