    Our 4020 has never not worked it’s by far the most reliable pice of equipment on the farm Most significant maintenance was replacing the hoses on the cooling system and fuel rail. Hell of a tractor!

      Our 4000 is a 68 and it’s a work horse. You couldn’t kill the bastard, even if you wanted to!! They don’t make em like that anymore!!

    Glad he mentioned how power take off can be dangerous. Ours had a cover that went over it to keep you safer.

    Did this as a kid. Unloading that hay wagon was definitely one of the dirtiest jobs ever. My dad had an old Gehl Chop All and also pulled it with our 4010 or 4020

    I was just doing some square bales today second cutting with my 1950 Ford 8N tractor runs like a brand new tractor I rebuilt that last winter with my Farmall McCormick super 8 tractor they both run like their brand new off the showroom floor

    How does the water keep it from plugging? Like a mower the moisture usually causes plugging.

      We understand it I'm 42 I started blowing at 9yrs with a ih 504 on badger blower and a H on the wagon water running as fast as ¾in hose flow for lubrication water keeps it from gumming up the pipe

      Alfalfa has a wax coating on it that when it gets into the Mid 50% moister amount it starts to gum up the blower pipe and will create friction and slow the hay going up and plug.

    Sleeveless for safety. That PTO will grab a sleeve or shirt tail in a millisecond.

      Mind explaining what the pto is? I don't know anything about tractors except that they look cool and they are essential for helping to put food on our tables

      @@stephanieann6622power take off. The most simplest way of explaining it is using the tractor engine s rotation through a gearbox system to turn an external piece of equipment.

    Had a 4020,till it burnt in 1988 July 4th not the fire works we wanted to see got it all fixed up ran great afterwards

      We burnt our first 4020 up, traded the second one off, and are now on our third one. These days the 4020 mostly just sits in the corner of the shop looking good, and let's the newer tractors do the work.

    If a 4020 isn't working it's the owner's fault. It's the best damn tractor ever built. Not one single thing on it that can't be repaired by a farmer

    Forgive my ignorance, how do you keep the material from molding while injecting water into the material?

      The silage we are putting in the silo is also 50% moisture but the reason it doesn't mold is because the silo is a sealed unit so there is no oxygen present so the feed doesn't mold.

    Sounds like you can afford a big movable shop fan. Should make transfering the grass less dirty for you.

      @@SilverFarms if that isnt enough wind power an electric leaf blower ziptied somewhere pointed at your face can also help keep debree from reaching it. Just take the battery out and charge after each work day etc.^^ cheers.

    I miss filling silo.. I can smell the chopped alfalfa... the 4020 ran the chopper... the 285 massey ferguson was the blower tractor

    Givien the amount on the silo roof... id say you plugged a few times. This is why we went with Bags instead.

      Lol the pipes actually didn't plug it was raining silage so I stopped it before the pipes plugged but either way its less then ideal to have the roof filled like that.

    My cousin got caught up in the PTO. It grabbed a hold of his coveralls. Fortunately, The tractor was only idling and it stalled out. Otherwise he would have lost more than he did. It broke his right leg. Took a 2 inch chunk of bone out with it.
    My uncle was wearing a pair of gloves and a PTO grabbed hold of that and pulled his thumb off.
    PTOs are nothing to mess around with , they are dangerous .

      We use it for ourselves. Baling good quality dry hay is not easy in this area. Feed quality is way better chopping feed like this.

    The ideal moisture is 68%. But, anything over 50% doesn't go up the pipe very well. Learn to build a pile.

      This silo can't be that wet. But we also put a couple bags up and balage that's wetter. The silos handy for a small dairy.

    That looks like the pipe is plugged to me , I know because I used to work around them silos, the farm I worked on had a ground vent instead of the open the vent on top and we hung a stop of plastic bag under it so we knew when the blower pipe was plugged

    I'll do night time baling every time. Very little dust, maximum leaf retention, a lot less equipment required. Easy and less costly to store, high quality feed.

      Your not going to be doing much night time dry hay baling in this area I can garentee that. And it's not going to be quality dry hay either compared to this. The dew is heavy so that's why people chop or make balage which isn't cheap either with the plastic in this area. And yes you can get some dry hay during the day but you can't get quality and it be consistent the weather usually sucks humid and heavy dews.

    Years ago a farm magazines was doing a film on farm safety and pto shafts. In less than TWO frames of the video the young man's white T-shirt was ripped off him. I am saying this because the young man in the video... HIS T-SHIRT IS A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT.
    I also had a classmate's Dad have a John Deere B hooked to a grinder pto rip his Bible overalls and shirt off. His Dad walked in the farmhouse obviously in shock. His wife was hosting a group of women at the moment. He never noticed them.

      He didn't mention that, I just know why he was doing it the way he was doing it. I've done that myself. I think he was just using water to lubricate the blower. The friction creates heat that causes the plant sugar to get sticky, and reduces efficiency.
