After years of watching you brother, this is the first time iv ever seen you pack a bowl.......I return to your channel often, we all miss this, and you.....❤🙏💚
John I so enjoyed your channel. When I needed to relax and hear a good story, I'd light up my pipe and hit play. You never failed to give great content. Gone too soon good sir. Life is too short.
Pulling the trigger on retirement is a frightening thing for most people. I know it was for me. But once you do it you realize those fears were unjustified. I feel so sad for John in that he never got to experience it. But it sounds from his videos, as though he had a rich and rewarding life. And one cannot ask for more than that from life. R.I.P. John for you are truly missed.
Thanks a lot to John's amazing family that made the decision to keep his videos online for us to be able to rewatch them, and for others to be able to watch them for the first time. When I rewatch these videos nowadays It brings tears to my eyes, because even though I never met him in person, it always felt as if he was a good friend of mine.
Yeah....maybe. I'd say this format would be fun once every 7 to 10 videos. The sit down and watch a guy smoke and talk about life format is why I come here, John.... Don't lose it on us!
Push the limits John , chase the coffee with some caffeine pills . And that’s the calmness that only a pipe can give you. Hey look at it this way , at least you have the option to keep on working if you so desire. Hope you find peace ✌️ Brother
Hey John i know this is easier said but enjoy being retired (stay active though) I'm coming up in a generation that may never have a retirement t look forward to.. Anyway dude you worked your ass off for it and you've earned it.. Enjoy it and travel a little and live your best life my friend
Speaking the truth john. I was medically forced to stop earlier than most, to many chronic ailments beating me dow. All too scary, just face em head on, take em all. Enjoy life the best you can.
MATCHESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS 860!! John that was the best lunch break video this week for me.... Well I think it's completely normal to feel what you feel.. But I think you are absolutely going to be happy and you are going to enjoy it no question about it my friend... Well back to work see you tonight.. Enjoy it out there 👍🏻👍🏻😉you know Sarge is going to tell you that a pipe cleaner would work better for you.. 🤣😂🤣
Loved it John. Im not to big on the live streams. Quit that freaking out. Your about to have the job I been wanting...retired. My dad worked to 73 is now 83 and just entered a nursing home. I want more than 10 years. He only really got 5 good ones before he got sick. That said our midnight guy is 83 and can barely walk. He is extremely well off financially and I cant help but shake my head every night he relieves me. I love the guy but that wont be me. Keep em coming Matches.
Hi John! Great video I like the format mainly because I love the outdoors. I never would have guessed you were retirement age you don't look a day over 50. Find yourself an easy going part time job for a year or so and then sit back and relax. Best of luck to you!
Really enjoyed this format. I a m a retired Urologist and really had a hard time retiring. Covere many Urology practices to ease into complete retirement. Now at 78 I think I have it figured out. Please continue all of your different videos because each one is special.
Glenn Dunnington Thanks so much Glenn! I really enjoyed trying something different and trying to keep the video relevant at the same time. Best Wishes to you!
Oh my God I haven't laughed so hard all week and I'm not laughing at you I'm laughing at the situation because we'll all go through that the freak out of knowing that we're getting old and I'm also laughing because I know you'll be fine you'll do well through it all, so it struck me funny for sure thanks for that belly laugh!
Four more years and I'm there too. Keep these introspections going. Empathy is a reassuring state for me! Have a pipe with the coffee and see if that doesn't balance out your energy.
Hello John! Trying to keep up with your videos...sorry for being late on this.. Great video...and great thoughts! I love all your videos about your work live so much...so interesting! And...yeah...retirement can be difficult...I've seen that, when my father retired from the railroad ... my advantage is, that historians usually never really retire...we do our research till we "drop dead"...lol But John...there isn't really something like "too much coffee"...LOL Take care! Be well! Mark
John, love seeing you back in your “element”. You were made for the one-on-one, story-telling themed/park setting-just a man, his pipe and his anecdotal tales. Loved it 👍 Welcome back and Thanks for the company! -T
Don’t freak out and enjoy that coffee. I’m 51 and retired last year- I will be cashing in the ss at 62 bec from my way of thinking I will have to live many years to offset not collecting as soon as I can and it will just pad the retirement. My only real issue is what to do with myself 👍🏼💨💨💨
Strolling through the woods is my favorite outdoor activity. And, I'd rather have too much caffeine than to much nicotine, so there's that..be well and enjoy!
First..eventhough you have never met my father he will tell you that retirement is the greatest thing ever. DO IT!! Second..I think the wandering man format would be lots of fun for you and us, as long your cost isn't to high.
Keep it off the hook, John! Retirement will be fun as long as you’ve been able to work up to it. Unfortunately, I became disabled and retired out due to ailments and illness without being financially prepared, so I’m struggling to keep my head above water month to month to pay my bills and medical expenses so I’m not able to enjoy retirement like I would like to. But hey, at almost 67 I’m still lucky enough to wake up and enjoy a pot of coffee with my pipe and appreciate the simple pleasures. I think I drank too much coffee this morning. Time for another cup and my Savinelli...
Time and chance sure can strike hard. All we can do is endeavor to play this last hand in front of us the best we can and trust in Providence. All the best, stay caffeinated, stay smokey
Instant classic. It was different which had my attention not knowing when another " I think I had too much coffee" would appear. Lol Besides tobaccos and pipes, your personality will always give you content. Try filming other things...feeding your cats... Fixing on your home.. Dinner preparation.. We'll love you for it...
I think you may have had too much coffee this morning! 😆 As they said at the bar in the movie The Wedding Singer, “Everything is going to be all right!”
Love the off-the-hook. I even like the freak-out (as all of us freak-outers can identify with you). We'd all watch anything you'd do. I like this - keep goin! And retirement will work out. You'll see.
Good seeing you John! And I know, hard to believe how fast time goes. And heck yeah, love to see you do those videos in the woods and parks and just out in nature.!
A timeless video. I know All of us have these "mixed emotions" moments. With a little common sense and a little advice or help from those who faced them before , we All make it through. And experiencing these moments in hind sight , we find it wasnt that big of a deal. Sure do miss seeing new videos.
This is awesome! I wish I would have watched this month's ago! I'm laughing my ass off in my basement watching this and at the same time I'm thinking I'm feeling the same way!!! To funny! Miss you matches! This has to be one of my favorite videos of yours sir!!!!
Great video! John you are about to embark on a new journey in life just get ready to enjoy retirement and have fun! If you have any hobbies do them. Take care my friend have a great weekend!
Matches off the hook? What's not to love?! Great video, and I hope to see many more in the future - no pressure, though - ha! Hope your retirement nerves calm down soon, for your own sanity. At 48, I wonder how it will all go, further down the road, if I even make it there, that is. I imagine I'll need to downsize from the ghetto to a cardboard box. The idea of retiring sounds wonderful, though - what could be better than having more time to do the leisurely things you love - like enjoy a fine bowl of Haunted Bookshop in the woods! Best wishes, Eric
Congratulations Matches. I retired 1 1/2 yrs ago, and really enjoy it. Keep doing vids for sure. Would love to see pipes and history, or hear related stories or articles as well. It's such a rich history & every time I light up my pipe, it takes me back. Not sure back where, but I like it there! -Enjoy!
I’m about three months older than you Matches. I’m not going to retire for at least another seven years. Of course, I am self employed so I really don’t consider my job to be work anyways. All the best to you in your new chapter in life! Keep the vids coming, I enjoy them.
Matches I worked over a decade for one of the big three. I had Health, full dental care, and good pay. It has not been an easier road, but it has been a better one. Enjoy your retirement and don't worry. Great approach with the video.
Excellent video - loved the casual format and frank content. I’m not too far behind you on this topic do everything resonated. I’m interested in your retirement journey - thanks for the advance team updates!!! Best, Gary
LOL...ya had me rollin' on the second "I think I drank too much coffee this morning". It's good to have a sense of humor, buddy. Keep that with you, and as is the case with so many things in life (as you know), it'll all be fine. Heck, maybe haunt one of the local B&M's for some easy work/pay for that year and a half. "Pay me not in cash - but in Haunted Bookshop". 😉 Be well, and as always - great video!
I'm gonna be 40 next year and already freak out. Man i like to retired now and wondering around on the woods smoking pipe like you, it seems refreshing.
John, I think you should switch to espresso 😂.. You took a nap and woke up 64 and Still full of Energy. Have a great weekend. Blessings from Gettysburg Pa
I really enjoyed this video. I felt like I could relate to it...mostly just because I thought I was freaking out. ;) Kidding aside, this was great. Take care!
Great video! I laughed, I cried, and I smoked a pipe while riding an emotional roller coaster! More please! Off the hook was off the chain! Good stuff!
John, love the casual peaceful walk in nature. Never a better place then to let your mind free and thoughts flow in the woods. Would very much so enjoy more of these " slightly different approaches". Cheers have a good one.
I like the off the hook video. But maybe add more topics of discussion. I enjoy watching videos of yours when your sitting talking and smoking in front of the camera... you’re one of the best story tellers around. Always entertaining to hear stories of your past or snippets of history or any topic you like to talk on really. That’s my feedback. Thanks for the videos!! Looking forward to the next
Thanks so much! I guess what I am trying to achieve is to add more video to the static, sit down, part. Hopefully I will show more of the surroundings, or just add some extra footage to keep things interesting.
Is there such a thinks as to much coffee? A day off work and I burn through 2 maybe 3 pots. Good to see you . A good friend of mine just retired after 28 year as maintenance at the plant. He shared the same sentiments about going . The rascal sends pictures of car shows and fishing an golf all the time. Good luck and happy smoking.
Enjoy life, enjoy your hobbies. There is LIFE after retirement. I’ve been retired for four years and don’t know now how I had time for a job. Everyone goes through a little case of nerves when they first retire.
This must be my favorite video John!... The same feeelings I have.. I was just a kid... Yesterday... For me its kinda sad thought... Thanks for making this video.. Wes
Great video, It's different but refreshing as is all of your video topics and I like the outdoors. It is a great place to just sit and relax with a pipe and good tobacco and enjoy peace and serenity. Keep up the good work.
I really enjoyed the new format. I couldn't help think of Robert Frost... Whose woods are these I think I know... Two roads diverged... As always, it was great stopping by.
Alright John, and I love the idea of this sort of content. It's always lovely to see the outdoors, and it's my favorite place to enjoy a pipe. And not to worry, everything always works out in the end my friend. Have a great Friday and happy piping brother.
I think you’re going to be fine buddy, everyone’s afraid of the unknown, and I don’t think you can ever have too much coffee, have a good one pal, love the outdoor stuff
Great video Matches860! Thanks for your honesty and comments on retirement. We all have our freaking out times. Smoking a pipe in the woods while listening to the stream sure is calming. Take care
I say never retire but pick up a side job that is fun (like full time you tuber!). Ha, excellent format with perfect editing and comedic repeats. Love the outdoors shots of the woods as you take is along! Will smoke some HB in your honor tonight!
John ....a great video...I love the format and inventiveness. I for one love your roaming vids and particularly the historical commentaries. I heard those Woodpeckers again ...they’re rare in these parts (UK)
John, I know how you feel about retirement. However it's not nearly as bad as it seems. Since I retired I have never been so busy. How I found time to go to work is beyond me now looking back. As far as money goes, I suppose I'm pretty lucky because I have my state old age pension. Then I have my Army pension and after that I have a smallish company pension. So all told, my three pensions add up to what I managed in my take home salary from work. They asked me to work on after I was 65 and I said OK but after a year of the normal grieve and hassle that seems to go around these days. I said, "ENOUGH " and quit. I missed my work but not some of the idiot bosses who don't think the long game and bounce from one crisis to another. You will know when you've had enough and it's your time to go. Best of luck and just go with the flow. Bernie
I retired after 38 years at my job, I was only 56, I had great plans, took my pension.... then my daughters and my wife all decided to go to college, so I had to find a new job .... oh well... best laid plans
Sad he never got to enjoy retirement...missed it by mere days...RIP
That happens alot sadly , or soon after. I never did hear what happened or when , just started watching a little over a year ago.

In 2021, re-watching Matches 860. Somehow it is comforting listening to familiar voices.
John I so enjoyed your channel. When I needed to relax and hear a good story, I'd light up my pipe and hit play. You never failed to give great content. Gone too soon good sir. Life is too short.

Excellent. Something different. Looking forward to Off The Hook: Episode Two

I am glad to have these videos to remember you by my friend. You are loved and missed. Happy Piping brother.

I really enjoyed the new format. I couldn't help think of Robert Frost... Whose woods are these I think I know... Two roads diverged... As always, it was great stopping by.
Fun to do, a few problems encountered, but I like how it came out for the most part.
Alright John, and I love the idea of this sort of content. It's always lovely to see the outdoors, and it's my favorite place to enjoy a pipe. And not to worry, everything always works out in the end my friend. Have a great Friday and happy piping brother.
Take your time deciding what you're going to do John, you've got ten months to mull it over.
Exactly what I'm doing! If I decide nothing, then that is still something LOL
Fantastic! I enjoyed it thoroughly. Frankly, it has been a pleasure joining you on this journey for the past 2 years. thank you!
It sure has!
Take care
It is perfectly normal to freak out once in a while! Good luck, John!
I think it's good as well, life is not a straight line by any means.
Great vid...retirements...Now I am freaking out...don't retire from those excellent topical vids
Bravo!! I like the format!! Less coffee = Less Freak Out!!! LOL!!! Let's get together soon!!
Nooooo, I need my java Man! Yes, we're getting due to get into mischief LOL.
I say never retire but pick up a side job that is fun (like full time you tuber!). Ha, excellent format with perfect editing and comedic repeats. Love the outdoors shots of the woods as you take is along!
Will smoke some HB in your honor tonight!
Thanks Doc, I am sort of leaning in the YT direction because it's already there if I can make it work for me.
Enjoyed the video, brother. Experimenting with Haunted bookshop mainly due to you. I'm enjoying it. God bless your last year of work!
Enjoy the HB, it's terrific stuff!
John ....a great video...I love the format and inventiveness. I for one love your roaming vids and particularly the historical commentaries. I heard those Woodpeckers again ...they’re rare in these parts (UK)
The woodpeckers were very busy today for sure! I'll do another vid from the park here shortly.
So sad he is gone. Guess we should live in the here and now
John, I know how you feel about retirement.
