    Great video, but if they were to just witness the Supernova, it would've happened 150 years in the past, and the debris wouldn't be here for 10s of thousands of years.

    • @ericaanderson8325

      It may have happened 150 years ago, but we wouldn't have seen it until now. Also gamma rays travel the speed of light, so it's likely we would get hit within hours of detection.
      Then again, who truly knows?

    • @yeetloaf_

      +Erica Anderson That's what I was saying is that since it was 150 light years away, the actual Supernova would've been 150 years ago and the debris I was talking about was the physical debris that was "heading this way" aka. Asteroids and other stuff.

    I hate to be a pain in the ass, but a Gamma Ray Burst would leave you no time to prepare. When the GRB is produced by a Supernova, it travels at the speed of light. So, the only warning you will get, will be the sky turning white & the scorching of the planet a second or two after it blows through our magnetic field and Ozone layer. Plus, a Stellar explosion 150 light-years away would not have any gravitational effect on asteroids, or anything else in our Solar System. Usually a Supernova, or even a Hypernova's explosive energy can screw up things for about 5-light years (gravitationally speaking).
    Otherwise, I love your work. I have a B.S. in Cosmology, so I hope this doesn't come off as a know-it-all response. I see you have talent & I want you to get all the technical aspects right for future EAS tales. Keep it up. Best wishes.

      +Anthony Ferrara Well, then. I welcome all feedback and love to have people pick at me, because in the end, it makes my work better than other people's. :) I know the difference between genuine critique and someone just being a jerk. Tell you what, the next time that I do some cosmic stuff, I'll run it by you, Anthony. I think that's great that you have a BS in Cosmology. It's not like i can pick up a phone and call someone I know that works in that field. You can be one of my consultants. :) I just went with the probability that most people don't know Cosmology, and created the suspension of disbelief that it could happen, but if it was too far out of the realm of possibility to the point that it was plain preposterous, then that detracts from my work and I don't want that to happen. Thank you again very much for the feedback.

    • @shelter345

      Thanks, Anthony. The EAS scenarios certainly have caught on and are turning into a cult thing here on UA-cam. Since I don't make actual horror movies (like, in Hollywood), the best i can do for now is to terrorize my viewers with scary scenarios that chill and excite. A lot of my work is also psychological, and where as i am a professional in that field, it lends a lot to my work and the effects that I want to have on the people watching. I find that the EAS is a wonderful and bizarre method to tell a story, and it is effective because when it comes on, its like our lives come to a halt while we get some very important information. Being the person that determines what information it will be that I dispense to the public, is powerful, because I control where my viewers are going. This is where plot and storyline are very important and can mean the difference between an amateur video, and one that will shock and chill you. That's some of my secrets. We will talk more in the future, I am sure of it. :)

      +shelter345 I'm looking forward to our discussions. I, for some reason, am fascinated by "End of the World" scenarios. Especially Nuclear War & Large Cosmic Events. I guess being a child of the Cold War had something to do with it. I too love to write. I have a book (pending publication) about A.I. & the after-life. Not like that terrible Tom Cruise movie I forget the name of at this time. Think "Dante's Inferno & Total Recall." We shall see. Plus, I am lucky enough to work with some great people in my field. (Michio Kaku, has a big ego). I work in the background so people like him can go on tv & spout "Astronomy 101" to the masses. Lest, I digress...That's what keeps my grey matter spinning. Can't wait to chat some more. I will send my email to your link. Have a great day.

    Such an alert doesn't make much sense to me, because as far as I know, gamma rays would reach Earth at the same time the explosion would become observable (gamma rays and light travel with the same speed).
    Debris alone would make sense, though - providing that the star exploded *at least* 100 years prior to debris coming to Earth (that debris would have to be extremely lucky, though). Debris doesn't take several hours to get to Earth after a supernova birth was observed - its' speed is significantly lower than that of light. And the distance would have to be much closer than 100 LY, because the debris would very likely get caught in the orbit of another system/planet if it were at such a great distance.
    Also, to add realism, I would have told the citizens to seek a fallout shelter. Gamma rays from a meteor impact or nuclear fallout - they're pretty much the same thing, and fallout shelters were made to protect against radiation.

    • @shelter345
      @shelter345 9 років тому

      lodziklocPL good points you make. I welcome the constructive criticism. I understand the physics behind such a scenario, I just threw them out (as most movie people do) in favor of going for the "Holy $h@t" scenario, and the "What if this really happened?" plot. I also thought that i did tell them to seek a fallout shelter. Hmm..I'm getting careless.

  • @eddievhfan1984
    @eddievhfan1984 8 років тому +25

    This is good, but I have to agree with one comment below-most of the energy of a supernova goes into the making of radiation that causes a gamma ray burst, and the mass of the star is effectively vaporized and scattered. We wouldn't see heavy rock chunks or white-hot star fragments, and even the ejected radioactive dust will take some time later than the light burst to get here. The realism angle is boosted more if you just mention the gamma rays, since those are wold-ending enough on their own...

    • @eddievhfan1984
      @eddievhfan1984 8 років тому +2

      Hell, I kinda wanna script something similar, using the rogue asteroid angle, but something a little more from Melancholia, where the asteroid comes in off-plane from the Solar System (hiding the encounter until it's already in the atmosphere, much like the Cheylabinsk event). It would hit the upper layers of the atmosphere, and the heat pulse would be enough to scorch quite a bit of land below it, which would make for some interesting EAS alerts. Then once the asteroid is sighted and its course tracked, it would be a captured Earth orbit that would recollide with the planet in less than a week, almost reaching lunar orbit and requiring some major last-ditch attempts to keep it from hitting Earth on the next pass around.

    The variability of a gamma ray burst is hard to guess. It could be light enough to just rattle some sensors, and it could be intense enough to vaporize our solar system. Assuming it was 150 light years away and it was a supernova based on a binary pair, the blast would probably have a swath larger than the sun. The entire earth would be impacted as a whole. Radiation moves at light speed, so if we observed a supernova 150 light years away, the supernova actually happened 150 years ago. If the collapse of one half of the binary pair went supernova, the other half would either fly wildly in some direction if the sudden change in forces acting on it didn't cause it to implode and possibly go supernova itself. One could possibly cause another. There are literally an astronomical number of possibilities. Nothing within the rules of physics is impossible.

    Well done video. But to be fair, a supernova from a star that is 150 light years away would take at the very least 150 years to reach earth assuming no interference with the gamma rays. Debris would not be a problem for a very long time after that, most likely thousands of years.

  • @spartakusgoulash3109
    @spartakusgoulash3109 6 років тому +1

    Gamma Ray events typically occur within second or minutes, as stars exploding happens relatively fast. I doubt there is any way to know when a star is about to blow up at a single given time. Also those rocks might take millions of years to reach here. 150 light years is a long way.

    To answer your question at the end of this video? YEAH. This could definitely happen. In our galactic neighborhood, three stars every hour die in this manner. And it is likely that this phenomenon is occuring 100 percent of the time at least somewhere in the universe.
    Thank your stars, that there are so many planets out there, that the odds of this happening in our lifetimes is relatively zero.
    But it isn't zero...

    Ran some numbers from Wikipedia on IK Pegasi; it's no threat.
    Those numbers:
    10^8 years left before IK Peg A enters red giant stage (this seems low, based on est. age of IK Peg A at 6 x 10^8).
    Distance increase between Sol-IK Peg 350 LY every 5 million years.
    10^8 years distance of IK Peg system: 4000+ LY.
    "Danger" Zone distance (extreme distance estimate) for Type 1a SN: 3300 LY.
    So, it's not likely that IK Peg B will detonate into a Type 1a SN in less that 100 million years. More than enough time to develop shielding for the entire Solar neighborhood (let alone our home). This is assuming that IK Peg B is a carbon-oxygen WD at it's core. If it's O-Ne-Mg at it's core, it may turn into a neutron star and not SN at all.

    gama ray burst aka supernova radiation moves at the speed of light. The distance that this amount of speed covers is measured in light years. The definition of a light year is the distance that light covers in 1 year. If a GRB was formed from even just 150 lightyears it's still gonna take a good while before it hits because if it's 150 lightyears away and it's moving at the speed of light than it would take roughly 153 years before it hits . That would be plenty of time to prepare for something like this. Not only that but most gamma ray burst happen billion of light years away from us where there not a threat.
