SHORT BREED DESCRIPTION:
The breed was created in 1930-1950s as a working dog adapted for service in the Army and police as guard dogs and sniffer dogs in various climatic conditions. It was the result of crossbreeding German Shepherds with Russian dog breeds, such as the Caucasian Shepherd, the Central Asian Shepherd.
The East-European Shepherd is moderately long in format, above medium or large in size with strong, but not coarse bone and with well-developed dry, relief muscles. Eyes are medium, oval, obliquely set, dark, with close-fitting, well-colored eyelids. Ears are medium in size, pricked, high set. Back is strong, wide and long.
Versatile, hardy, loyal, protective and playful are just some of the words used to describe the East European Shepherd. This breed is an intelligent dog who needs a strong leader/owner to bring out the best in them. Being a large dog, they can be a bit stubborn unless they have someone to look up to. Beautiful, magnificent and with outstanding good looks and a steady temperament without unnecessary aggression, they are a truly a breed that we need to see more of.
The East European has a more dense coat than their counterpart. This dense coat, with its soft undercoat, allows this working canine to withstand the freezing winter temperatures.

I had this breed in my childhood, gifted by my grandfather. He was trained under army for 4 years. He destroyed a big mad bull dog who came to attack on our family when we were enjoying an evening walk in our town. Jack (our dog) killed that MF bull dog in minutes.
Literally the best dog I have ever had. I have had 75 dogs of different big and small breeds in total in my life but, he was actually the best and the most obedient companion I have ever had. There are a lot of real stories i can tell about that heroic dog. I can never forget him.
R.I.P my dear Jack.
I believe it… I had one when I was 6 given to me from my father’s friend. Did not FEAR ANYTHING & was LOYAL till his DEATH

Yes, he must be. ❤️
I saw the VEO for the first time in Moscow and was so taken by the breed, after my GSD died I drove to Hungary to get one.
He is the best dog one could ever have, better than gold!

I grew up with two Eastern European shepherds. They are the beats dogs to have. Miss them dearly
They are just amazing :)
We have one. Very smart, watches everything, all the time...especially when we take him out to socialize him, pays close attention to the way out of every place we take him into. He doesn't like to be boarded...escape artist. Have been working with him for two years, and he is a quick study. Got him as a rescue.

The Eastern European Shepherd was bred in the USSR in the 1930s, it is a young breed. This breed of service dogs was created in the 1930s in the USSR for service in the Soviet army in various climatic conditions. The base breed for the breeding of the Eastern European Shepherd Dog was German Shepherds exported from Germany, to which the blood of local breeds of huskies and their mestizos, Great Dane and some other breeds flowed. The breed adopted its modern look in the 50s of the 20th century. The first standard, which fixed the breed type of the VEO, was approved in 1964. With the collapse of the USSR, the breed almost disappeared. In the 90s of the 20th century, there was a fashion for other dog breeds imported to Russia from Europe, with the fashion for everything Western, there was also a fashion for German Shepherds. They began to mix them with an eastern relative and almost destroyed the breed of Eastern European shepherds. As is often the case, only the efforts of the chosen ones enthusiasts helped to save the breed of Eastern European Shepherds from extinction. Currently, Eastern European Shepherds are gaining strength again, the number of breeders in Russia is growing, and the number of fans in all corners of the country and abroad is increasing. Work is underway to recognize the breed in the International Cynological Federation.
Handled an East European Shepherd at the LKA Show in Kenya last weekend...it was the first time I set my eyes on one.
👍👍👍
I have two of them. Mother and daughter. Great and really respectful dogs
I adopted an East European Shepherd/Husky mix from Russia in February.

Hey Nancy! You are great for adopting! It is all about patience. But i believe that it is a lot of work!

Awesome dogs :)
Me too
German shepherd are more friendly expensive better training eastern are taller healthy .
How is she with the warm weather?
I have a male E.E. Shepherd.. any chance you're looking to have puppies? (: I have a video of him on my channel
We have one, South Dakota, US. He is a great dog. 135lbs of shedding wonder. We also have five other dogs and a cat. Our smallest is 5 lbs. He does well with all of them, they use him as a heating blanket. I need to walk him more often, but we do have a big backyard for him to run around in. He is my best buddy, as I type he is at my feet with one of our other dogs sleeping on him. Great breed, wonderful dog. He is super protective though, as he is what he is. Not a dog to get if you are not ready for training some socialization. Even still, you should always be watching them around strangers. They do not like people they don't know.
Thanks for sharing 👍
I have that breed right now many are scared of her but ahe is harmless unless she is alone, shes little trouble but i love her shes my first dog to own and im happy that she is in my life.
Im from georgia

Rescued my boy from a family that couldn’t care for the litter. They thought they were GSDs but multiple professional trainers have told me he’s a VEO. I never could find a GSDs in the color/pattern as him, but I see so many VEOs that look just like him. He also fits the personality of a VEO compared to a GSD
You are great for rescuing!
How is his personality I’m considering this breed?
@@bandanbrar4241 The temper of the dog will pleasantly surprise dog lovers, who often deal with a German Shepherd. If the "German" is a super-energetic choleric scamp, then VEO is a balanced and calmer sanguine. The Eastern European Shepherd Dog clearly divides people by rank. The owner is the only one. His dog will obey and obey him, even if the big-eared one is fed by the grandmother of the "boss". The main task of socializing and raising a pet falls on the shoulders of the leader. Of course, the OKD dog course can be completed with another adult family member. But in real life, the pet will be guided by the requirements of the owner.
The second caste is the household. VEO knows perfectly well that his pack needs to be protected under all circumstances. Moreover, she will protect even those family members with whom there are not too tremulous relationships. Let's talk separately about relationships with children. For VEO, they are kids who should not be offended in any case. You can have fun with them in the yard and even go for a walk. Important! With all due respect to the intelligence of the Eastern European Shepherd, you should not let other people's children near her.
The last category of bipedal citizens are outsiders. The attitude towards them can be described in one word - distrust. That's why she's a service dog. And she doesn't care if a bosom friend came to visit you or an annoying seller of a multi-slicer for vegetables. For all strangers who find themselves near family members or in the entrusted territory, the dog turns on the "potential danger" mode. He will sit quietly nearby and observe, but the external calm may disappear in a moment. The further reaction depends on the upbringing of the pet. VEO, who has completed a general training course, is able to assess the threat level and rushes at an outsider only when there is real danger. A VEO grown without an experienced hand can bite a lot, even if an outsider pats you on the shoulder in a friendly way or reaches out to pick up a fallen child.
Important! Due to the increased size, the Eastern European Shepherd surpasses the "German" in power. The strength of its bite is 140 kg against 135 kg of the German Shepherd. But at the same time, the VEO is less aggressive. A properly educated pet is not subject to impulsive impulses.
The Eastern European Shepherd, like its German ancestors, is focused on working with humans and has excellent learning abilities. VEO is not inclined to dominate the owner, but it is also impossible to let his upbringing take its course. Learn the main principles: reasonable rigor, fairness and discipline.
Important! To train a German Shepherd, you need to come up with different game formats so that the dog does not lose interest. Everything is much simpler with VEO. She is stable, efficient and will show the wonders of training without any sophistication.
Thank you so much for your video. I have my great friend, my EES now 3 years with me. And we both experienced so many adventures together. He was found in the streets of barcelona, got to germany and now he lives with me in greece. And i can totally agree to your describtion. But i also have to say that all of me and my friend thought for a long time he was a mixed breed. We found out, not long time ago what he really is and now everything makes more sense. I am so in love with this special kind of breed and this special personality, and i hope that many adventures are waiting for us. He ist the best jogging and carni cross partner and also a very good swimmer. He is so kind and confident at the same time. Hakuna Matata named and as every dog owner will say of his best friend, he is my hero and the best friend i could ever wished for.
Thanks for watching! You are great for taking care of him! And thanks for sharing your experiences with EES.
I am a lucky owner of a East European Shepherd and I love this breed
They are amazing
My female is very cautious around people she doesn't know, and with me having PTSD from US Military service. I don't anymore have to be hyper vigilant as she is on point ALWAYS!!! If I leave the house wo her, she will stay about 4ft from front door and stare at the door for hours till I come back. I think they call this velcro dog. One thing I can't seem to break with her is her prey drive with Cats or Squirrels or anything that runs away. I won't let her chase anything as I like all critters, but she sure as hell wants too!!! He tail goes strait out in a curve and starts wagging and she will kinda lung to want to go get them, but I say leave it and she backs off.
I have an Eastern European Shepherd in California, she is very big, cautious around strangers and very smart!!! She is almost 55kg and 28inch's at the withers. I made this dog my service dog as I am a disabled veteran. She does require constant attention as far as what she does outside the house. You have to be firm but fair with these dogs as they don't suffer fools.
I wonder, how does she doing in the hot California weather?
@@Rocadog Air conditioning and I live in an Apt. so we only go for her to do her business when its this hot out.
@@Rocadog Where I live in summer it may get 75 deg F so it isn't that bad for her...
I have This breed, his name is Joker. He is now 2 years young. big. No Stranger can approach to give handshake or come in yard. He guarding 24/7. He only relax and sleep when im with him in house. Then he knows, I will do guarding duty. He recognize our family car sounds, know when im parked. Very friendly and playful. Most of kids in village know him, he playing with them, now winter time on snow hill. Sometimes he get naughty, trying to take off kid gloves or bait in boots. But its just play for him. he is very sad when im going out without him. He will look at window and wait for me all night. When I go to sleep, he start guarding duty, no one can enter room, except my parents and son. Once i traveled to US for 3 months. My parents said he was very sad for few weeks. Sometimes he get distracted by lady smells, because around we have lot of dog ladies. I speak with him all time. We going fishing. He know meaning "fish" and many more words. Sometimes its enough to look at him, and he understands that i have to go out without him. So yes, very deep friendship, and trust.
@@Rocadog This breed of service dogs was created in the 1930s in the USSR to serve in the Soviet Army in various climatic conditions. Russia and the republics that were part of it are quite extensive territories, where it is hot and cold, this dog can live in any climate.
we have a VEO called Yeltisn whom lives out in country side of Hong Kong - amazing dog and gets on well with our GSD

I have an Eastern European Shepherd, she is 5 1/5 yrs old and 125lbs. She is amazing but always on point, even Barn Owls above her at night on walks... She is my service dog I need due to US military service... the only time she says a word though is not outside but in my house when I allow to not be a service dog but just a dog and some one knocks she lets every own know in my apt building, you better be a friend. We are bonded at the hip. I always say I saved her from the pound and she saved me... I love her with all my heart!!!! But Oh My God the shedding.... is off the frigging hook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with you, they are amazing, but the shedding is extreme (just like with all the shepherds). That is why some people call them Shedders instead of Shepherds :-D
@@Rocadog Indeed they do. Like oh my God shedding!!!!
OMG the friggin shedding off the hook, my Robot vacuum chokes on it. I have to vacuum daily with a shop vac as I have hardwood floors....
@@Rocadog I think EES are worse than reg shepherds as far as shedding goes... Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I didn't see this till went back to watch vid again...

ok this clears up some stuff for me owning a Czech GSD I didn't know if it was considered an east European Shephard or not lol. After seeing this video I'm glad i bought the GSD they are awesome dogs.

I have seen one multiple times before he lives in a neighbourhood right next to mine. His name is Mocke (a swedish boy name) He's pretty friendly. And helpful.

Im from 🇱🇹 and we had one back in the day. He’s name was Bonis. Really big with straight back and muscular legs. He weighted around 55-60kg
My father got him when he was 2 years old but he felt natural from first day in our house.
He was so protective from strangers that no one could touch him or cum close by.
My dream is to get same dog, but don’t know if it’s ok when I live in apartment? Any ideas?
Never heard of an East German Shepherd before. Glad I know the difference now. I don’t think I could handle one of these shepherds. Thanks for the video!
You are welcome, i wish i could meet some, but i would have to travel to east europe.. maybe some day
East european shepherd are a separate breed that includes german shepherds strongly that is why they look very alike. East german shepherds are a line of german shepherd dogs with a pedegree pure from the original german shepherds but look different from western german shepherds because they retain their working capacities with a "square" non slopping hip and straight hocks.
I've owned German Shepherds in the past and found them much harder to train than our current East European Shepherd. Once he knows what I want, he anticipates my commands. He is an honest dog who has never shown a trace of the sneaky tendency that sometimes spoils a German Shepherd. As regards the EES being excessively dominant, I am an elderly woman, not especially dominant, and have had no trouble teaching our EES to follow basic commands and to walk politely on his lead. He is also friendly with children and strangers who want to pet him. His only vice - he occasionally steals his master's sock from the wash basket and won't give them back till he sees one or other of us going to the fridge to fetch him a bribe.
у меня была эта порода, она намного крупнее и массивнее немецкой овчарки I had this breed, it is much larger and more massive than the German Shepherd
единственный минус этой породы , что она сильно воняет и много шерсти, это не комнатная собака , лучше держать её во дворе the only disadvantage of this breed is that it stinks strongly and a lot of wool, this is not a house dog, it is better to keep it in the yard
I have an EES too and boy Roca is right my boy is really serious with other male dogs
Roca owner watching videos on Rocadog channel! Love the name 👍
I got a white one with the beautiful straight back and 29.5 inches at the shoulders. He's very relaxed whenever we're out and yet very protective of property (home/vehicle). Whenever I'm asleep in the house he becomes a different dog and all he wants is to keep anything that moves (exept family members) away. He was DNA tested and came back as 100% GSD, but has every physical attributes described in this video.
Sounds like an amazing dog 👍
Rocadog He has no training and yet he alerts me (wakes me up) whenever I have a PTSD related nightmare. According to a local trainer I would have to get 50-75 dogs to “maybe” find a dog so in sync with my personality.
Your dog probably a GSD and not a VEO.
@@chinap1993 I’m pretty sure you’re correct, but he has definitely turned out to be a great dog nevertheless. I did get a second one with VEO traces. She’s definitely a working dog. Her temperament is far more assertive. They have protected me several times since I got them. Have a good day.
From all east european shepherds ive ever seen only 1 was crazy :/ others were lovely and friendly dogs :))
Great dogs, i love most of the shepherds dogs, for example White Swiss Shepherd or Shiloh Shepherd as well :)
Have western show line gsd myself :) its a great dog but makes too much noises :D hes too loud hehe
There is actually crazy ones like Kangal
Here in the states we have a lot of 'german shepherds' that have very long, thick fur. Weigh about 90- 115lbs or 40- 52 kilograms and have very large bones. But they tend to be mostly redish brown with a little bit of black on their back and face. Most people call them the American German shepherd. But who really knows.
I have never seen one in person, but I would absolutely LOVE to have some! Where can I find them?! I’m in the U.S.A.
I also never heard about East German Shepherd before. Looks just like German shepherd, but as you said, there are some differences
It would be very hard to distinguish them, even if you see him somewhere

Found my EES at the Human society in South Dakota , USA.
have a question for you he is a neutered male about a year old but hasnt been socialized with other dogs
how would you socialize him?
It really depends on how he reacts to other dogs.. And also about your options. Do you have some friends or family with dogs or can you visit dog parks for example? Is your dog agressive towards other dogs or is he just shy/alert? Does he have some bad experience with other dogs from the past?
In general, you should start slowly. Just walk next to other dogs and monitor your dogs reactions. If your dog is okay just by walking around other dogs, you can try to make contact. It can be very short, just short sniff or even let them be close to each other. Its better if the other dog is well socialized, calm and relaxed, because you want your dog to be calm and relaxed as well. Hyperactive dogs are not the best to start socialization with. Just make slow little steps with the socialization, never push it too quickly.. Always monitor your dogs reaction. If he is doing good job, reward him.
@@Rocadog where i live we dont have dog parks , i do not think he is aggressive but it tends to look like more of an anixety issue. the shelter had him kenneled alone with no other dogs around him because he would constantly bark at them. but with people he is quiet and alert, i dont know about his past history. however i do know that he is very smart and has had no training at all but i did achieve a sit command with in 5 minutes of being with him. he has potential and i want to be able to help him into a calmer state of mind. thank you so much for your time on this. the shelter has him listed as a german shepherd but his size is to large for that he is 80 lbs now at 1 year .
again thank you

It is important, that East European Sheperds are healthier than German Shepherds, especially the ones of show line.
They have a better built skeleton and a more stable psyche. Moreover much better they are carrying staying in very low temperatures. These differences all the time are expanding, because these dogs in the East of Europe often are being bred with the much greater care than German Shepherds all over the world...
@@WatahaSrebrnegoChabrayou are right, but the problem with german shepherds, in my opinion is, that they are just too popular. There is a big demand for them and a lot of money in it. That is why unexperienced breeders are breeding them just for of the profit and they dont care about their genes.. Its the problem with all popular dog breeds.
@@Rocadog I agree with You, definitely the popularity is able to destroy every breed. Until people who are putting their heart into it are dealing with breeding, it is well. Unfortunately, large number of German Shepherds got into hands of completely casual people.

I have a beautiful EES She is smart, calm but agile. Ready to play, good with other dogs. She recognise family members even she meet them for the first time. She looks for petting like a cat. Very sweet and ready to befriend, she can be very scary to everybody passing by our fence. Good guardian...
Thanks for sharing!
Yep. Constant shedding...but worth it... that alert curious why they check things out, the slow, crouch when they are on the leash but about to ambush a wandering lose cow, strang Tom cat or lost deer. Or the way, they are your spoiled teddy bear but no matter how old they, get you still find they have many little tricks they pull out of the blue to test you or let you know they are upset with you... you havnt take them with you for a car ride in a few days and they thought they were going with you to the dentist since you just got done playing with them for the last hour...so, all of a sudden you find that suddenly your 13yr. Old shepherd has decided to scatter all his toys on the floor and has knocked the leash down to tell you that you forgot the dog, as he is in his favorite spot with his ears relaxed and giving you his guilty look but in a way that you know he is upset that you left him behind. Lol. They are good dogs. I live mine
The shedding is the only "disadvantage" about them, other than that, they are amazing dog, just as you described
