This guy is so refreshing to listen to. I had a similar post JKD awakening when I first saw jiu Jitsu and I was hooked. Mid 90s pre ufc

As someone who did door security in the north of England for eight years, my one suggestion is never to take anyone to the ground unless there is no alternative. You may get the better of your opponent but you won't get the better of his friends who are coming out of the pub and start using your head as a football.

That's good advice. It's typically the same advice we use. The issue is in a fight it's not always a choice. So Train.

As a cop though, I don’t get a choice. In order to take a resisting subject into custody, the ground is where that’s done.

People who say things like "never go to the ground in a street fight", really don't know how JJ (or for that matter, even how wrestling) works.

The first time I saw the "boxing blast" was in the UFC when Vitor fought Wanderlei, I think the fight was under 30 seconds. That was wild, from one end of the Octagon to the other.

The classic Straight blast works to disorient an opponent if it’s a just few short beats and coming from an angle. But I def like your newer style straight blast. Also trapping works…not the wing chun way, but rather the boxing way. See George Foreman for examples.

The entry is much more important when you’re dealing with weaponry. Because you have to be able to close the distance without getting hit.

Funny you should mention your theory that wing chun comes from old school boxing. As a researcher of pugilism from 1700s - 1800s, I had made the same connection. So much of 'wing chun' is like an ineffective version of bareknuckle pugilism, incl the trapping, elbow blocks and punching. These were v effective when done as in pugilism but seem to have been adapted to fit their culture which lost a lot of the effectiveness. So yeah, I agree that wing chun seems to be, in reality, a weakened version of classical pugilism probably learned from Western sailors.

Back in the day CM was one of the things I loved SBG for. Rodney was one of the people who changed my game and outlook on boxing completely. But CM was a long time ago. SBG standup game has moved forward. And rightfully so. Last year I sparred a Russian professional heavyweight who could move like a middle weight. I tried CM and he told me that it would make me static and an easy target. Since then I kinda put it on the backburner as a strategy. Instead I use a lot of head movement now and land more shots and take a lot less.

Which should someone learn first, boxing or BJJ ?

    • @myfriend280
      @myfriend280 Рік тому +1

Boxing. You’ll reach functional mastery much much sooner with boxing. I’ve studied JKD and trained individually with a boxer and the reality is most grapplers aren’t high level. If you’ve played football or just wrestled with your buddies you’ve got enough fighting instincts to work your way up vs a grappler because the odds that the grappler is high level that you’re facing in a street fight are low. It takes years to master and most quit once they’ve learned a basic amount. I’ve dominated every wrestler I’ve ever fought in a street fight and I’ve even dominated boxers. Once upon a time before I learned how not to fight and I got into about a dozen street fights a year I was exactly the size of Roy Jones on fight night. 5’11 - 175 pounds.
Most grapplers take so much pride in their grappling because they don’t have fast hands. They are easy targets if you understand how to strike without exposing yourself to an easy takedown.
Learn how to dominate the standup and defend against the takedown.
If it becomes a battle of grapplers it’s a 50/50 fight anyway even if you are a trained grappler. A high level jiujitsu guy who loses to another high level jiujitsu guy is getting the same amount of passed out as you are if they get caught in a choke.
Also, it’s that much more demoralizing to the “average” grappler (which is what most of them are-average) when a guy dominating them in the standup survives their takedowns or their ground game and gets the fight vertical again. All they’re feeling is “damn, it’s going to suck getting punched and gashed in my face again.”
With all that said, absolutely learn grappling because it’s absolutely essential and possibly life saving.
But most street fights are won by the guy who lands first and fastest. So for the sake of odds which compound over time establish solid boxing skills. They’ll stay with you the rest of your life and you’ll be confident where you spend most of your waking hours and where you want to keep the fight anyway- on your feet.

Another one who has been somewhere... and didn't understand anything. I wonder how long your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu would last against a guy with a knife? Or how long will you "roll" against several people on the street? All of MMA ends where the rules disappear and everything is allowed. Just because most people don't practice martial arts like they should doesn't mean sports are better. Nothing with rules can be better than something without rules if both are trained equally well. Were there no Wing Chun teachers before Ip Man? Complete bullshit - you can learn a bit more from this guy about it, and about real Wing Chun, in general.ua-cam.com/video/XkKlJMIjw4I/v-deo.html
