I'm surprised Drogba didn't win it in 2012 considering how influential and good he was in the champions league that year. He probably should've won the award in 2007 aswell. He was unbelievable that year.
Drogba wasn’t actually that good in the CL just the final and they were way off the pace in the premier league compared to City.
Yaya was an untouchable for 4 years.
So the African Ballon d'Or should be awarded to African players based on their performances at their european club rather than for their national teams?🤷🏻

2008 was to go to Drogba and 2009 was to go to Eto'o (Treble winner with Barcelona - scoring 36 goals and scoring in the Champions league final). In 2008, CAF was not happy with Drogba as he declined to attend the award ceremony so they gave the award to Adebayor who was supposed to be the runner-up and attended the event. After that, CAF announced that they had resolved their differences with Drogba and gave him the award in 2009 despite the fact that his team (Chelsea) never won the league and he scored only 14 goals compared to Eto'os treble and 36 goals that season.
There has been crazy politics in other years but I cannot get into all that.

I guess remaining in the Egyptian league and not moving to Europe made it a bit hard to pick him for the award. He was indeed a great player in his time.
I don't know of any player playing for an African league who won the award. Most of them played in Europe.

The only African player that made it to 1998 FIFA top 20 players around the world is Okocha. CAF gave Hadji the award because he scored the best goal in Burkina Faso 1998, despite Morocco didn't reach the last four in the Afcon tournament. Hadji wasn't in top three best player in the 1998 Afcon tournament. But CAF corruptly snubbed Okocha. 2004 wasn't meant for Eto too. Yeah, he had a credible year in Barca, jay jay also had incredible season in Bolton. So AFCON Tunisia 2004 should be the decider because the number 1 football tournament in the continent is AFCON. Funny enough, okocha led Nigeria to knock out the tournament favourite (cameroon that featured eto) out of AFCON. Okocha display leadership role in the game by controlling it. He responded with freekick (last kick) to equalize for Nigeria.He was the top scorer in the tournament, won bronze with the golden boot. CAF did him dirty, and the CAF president was found to be a corrupt individual too..
