The 4th mode where the screen flips all the way over is actually good for when docked with an external monitor and keyboard/mouse. It can act as just a monitor without the base of the laptop being in the way.

I got this today. I came from a surface book 3 13.5". Got this because our family needed an extra laptop. I was hesitant about it when looking online, but I bought it because all the surface book 3's were sold out (end of line I guess). After using it for a day I think this is great upgrade. It feels more solid and the heft and weight of it when handling it are great. Actually feels lighter and easier to carry over the surface book 3 despite the extra 0.2 lbs on it.

But anyways, I needed a new laptop and your review helped me decide on the Laptop Studio. After a week, I'm absolutely loving it--it's perfect for my workflow (graphic design, web design/development, some light video editing). The size is perfect, love the build quality and size, not to mention the display and the incredible trackpad. And you're absolutely onto something--this device just feels good. I know the specs aren't the greatest, but I don't care.

Dear Justin, I'm also thinking about the surface laptop studio. We kinda have the same workflow. (Graphic Design and Web Design with light video editing) For which specs did you go for? And how is it going 6 months later with this device?
@@rayn-studio Hey Christian, it's going great. It does everything I need and performs well. Studio mode is so convenient. The only caveat is I primarily work from home and use my desktop for major multitasking, so i ended up going with the i7/16GB model which handles Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and several browser tabs open at the same time quite well. I think if this was my primary machine, I would go up to 32GB, for maximum multitasking ability.

actually there was a design like that in Sony VAIO Flip back in 2013-2014. And the 4th mode is useful for artists to just draw. Anyway, this is such a great review in all aspects, had pleasure watching! All the views of the city and city life stories were also meaningful for me, thanks for doing such a review.

Just ordered mine today. Looking forward to it. And this review makes me feel even more comfortable with that decision. I have a book 2 and LOVE it, and was looking for book 4, but saw this came out instead. (Like you I got the impression that the studio laptop replaces the book line, so thank you for confirming). I do sometimes remove the screen but most times I just turn it and reattach it to use it flat. I use it in pen mode most so I need that flat option. What I like about the studio version is being able to go flat or back to keyboard looks like will be more convenient. Even tho I do detach my screen, I'm pretty sure it won't bother me not to. Thank you for a well made review.

For the coffee, for the tour & for the dinner 😉 But mostly for totally upending my world with this one 🤪 I am looking to replace my ageing MacBookPro next Spring - you mention my conundrum - I love the MBP for it's quality feel, but in many ways I am NOT an Apple fan - I run mostly MS365 apps, but NOT Edge! Now I can think MS hardware too, with the only, REALLY frustrating, downside aspect being that even with Win11 we still get those horrendous Win95 dialogue boxes - Grrr. Thanks again for another superb vid 🙂

Would have been interesting to see the video editing performance test while plugged in. That tends to make a pretty huge difference for Windows laptops.

So I’d did that with this after i filmed this because I was curious too and while you’re right there is usually a big difference there isn’t a big one here. I still had to drop to 1/2 in Resolve regardless 🤷♂️
@@TheUnlockr which configuration did you have, maybe the a2000 version can perform better for video editing than the 3050ti?
@@TheUnlockr Were you using the 16gb or 32gb RAM version? I'm looking for the 32gb RAM since I'll be doing digital art, 2d and 3d animation, 3d modeling, music creation, and game development -- all (except for the first one) really wanting at least 32gb of RAM. Video editing wants as much RAM as possible as well. But if the 32gb of RAM is lagging on 4k video processing, depending on if the software is gpu, cpu, or RAM intensive, I'd be a bit hesitant given its power draw is lowered for a 3050ti, and the thinner build will cause quicker heat throttling.

Man, that last comment about the desire to use the laptop couldn't be any more true. I own a Surface Laptop Studio i7 and RTX 3050 TI. Although I acknowledge that it may not be the most powerful, energy efficient, inexpensive device, I always get this urge and excitement to use it. Thankfully I'm a student and have a use for the studio mode. I love to use the pen with the OneNote app and do some math on it.

Enjoyed watching because it includes non-tech, real-life scenes like going outside, eating breakfast, going to a flea market, even the part which shows a drone flying. Excellent overview! I'm getting ready to upgrade from a Surface Book 2 `15" and the SLS is on my short list.
I agree about the tablet on the SB. I wanted to use it more, and really loved the feel of it. But, yeah, not having the gpu and most of the battery really limited its usefulness, plus it gets uncomfortably hot. I sometimes use it with the screen reversed, as a giant chunky tablet, but that's not a super-convenient way to use it. The SLS is definitely a good evolution of the Surface Book line, even though I do still really love my SB and am happy it's still performing so well.
This is a thorough and very helpful review, and the personal observations and different locations added a lot to the enjoyment of watching. Well done!

I’ll be getting this to replace my MacBook. I had a surface book in the past but the fact that you couldn’t detach the screen to change the form or use as a drawing tablet while the graphics card was in use killed me! This won’t have the same issue 🙌
you can detach surface book screen and also you can reattach it flipped to use as tablet WITH THE GPU. you are wrong.
@@asdjesdsd the gpu is in the base so you can’t detach the screen while the gpu is in use. You can flip the screen over before doing something that requires the gpu but it would be nice to move freely between positions while working.
@@asdjesdsd No. They're not wrong. If anything is using the gpu it will prevent you from detaching. You have to quit whatever is using the gpu first. So you either have to start out in the specific configuration or quit everything you're doing and then detach and reattach if you want to flip it around and fold it with the screen on the outside. It's not a major deal but can be disruptive to work flow if you need to do that frequently.
I got mine in the beginning of December last year and replaced my 2018 MacBook Pro 13 inch screen! I’m loving my surface laptop studio!
Impressed by the quality of your review. Nicely done. I am looking to replace my SL3 15 with either SP8 or SLS. I also have a SPX w/LTE for travel. The SL3 usually stays on my desk driving 2 external displays so it is a 3-screen setup. I've been taxing the i7 lately with Adobe CC so I believe this video re SLS won me over. The SP8 w/LTE also has advantages as I could ditch my SPX but not sure w/o a gpu. But, I really enjoy my SPX and more so than the ipad Pro 12.9 I used before. I've been with the Surface line for work since the SP3. I also use a Mac Mini at home. Again, thanks.

You are right at the end about the feeling of the surface brand, I think the reason why it feels good is because the premium hardware and engineering put into them that stands out and has a great quality feeling of the device.
Loved this - especially the premiere run-down part and the battery life test- really shows what we'd be getting. One thing I'd love to see is how it is plugged in to an external 4K display - you had some large screens behind the laptop, was hoping we'd get to see what happens to performance when the graphics card is powering another screen. Is that something you tried?

Awesome review, great style of video! I haven't changed my laptop since ~2011, and if I will be able to afford it, I think this will be the next one. It looks like something I would love to use for writing, book designing, photo and video editing. Minimalist yet packed with useful features. We will see.

Great video as usual.
I have the Surface book 2.
it is pretty similar to this device. If you take the screen off and reverse it - you have access to the GPU and a flat tablet. I genuinely don't see a difference in capability in that way.
What I do see is that I would not be able to make my device lighter and plug it in and use it as a Netflix machine on a stand with the laptop studio.
There are some upsides to being able to detach the screen.
I am loathed to give that up for now. Maybe I will try and catch one of the discontinued SurfaceBook 3's before they run out and have that for a few years.
You said something so accurate in your video. Surface devices make you want to use them. I have surface devices for my children and wife, and they are our go-to devices. They just work, and you get used to the quality. They are well built and lovely to engage with. Someone really thought about how they might be used,
I love having the SD card reader - I have a 512gb micro SD card in mine, which is there permanently, twice my SSD size. Makes all the difference, and I would struggle to not have that.
I love having 2 USB-A ports and use them all the time for different peripherals and for charging various things. The surface book 2 is the best PC I have ever owned (Bar the Surface Pro, which I also have), and I wouldn't want to be without it for the surface laptop studio, beautiful though it is.
You make an excellent case for someone who has never tried the surface book, but for someone who loves it, there does not seem - to me at least - to be enough to make me make the switch.
Your video, however, was, as per usual, sublime.
You have a way of doing this that is fabulous - I feel like I went out with a friend for a coffee, and we talked tech for a while.

I also still have an SB2 with the 1050ti. The SLS is very tempting for me as the performance of my SB2 is finally starting to annoy me. The thermal throttling is pretty ridiculous and after some research I've found that undervolting can alleviate this issue. The only problem is that undervolting was disabled at a BIOS level to prevent pludervolt ://
@@TheUnlockr Guess who just bought an SLS for their daughter? Looks like I am on the train and headed away from my beloved Surface Book. SLS has an 11th gen i7, and the SB3 has a 10th gen i7 - even if the graphics card is better in the SB3, the world is moving on, and we will have to roll with it. I see an SLS in my own future - especially s I am seeing one 2nd hand for 50% off.
In one way sad because I love my SB2, but exciting. In another because the new form factor will open new opportunities. I wonder how I will integrate it into my workflow - a new and better surface pen - we will see what happens. Staying positive, haha.

Its about a feeling... thats the best review ever cause this is so true. I have a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5i, which is a great laptop, 10th gen, 360° FHD screen with touch, dolby, backlit keyboard, very lite, good battery life, etc... BUT, it doesnt have the "feeling" of my old Surface Book 2. There's something about some machines that "feeling" is the only word to describe them.

I want to use this device for college tasks but also to take notes for subjects like math on OneNote.
Could you rest your hand on the screen as you write or do you actually have to prevent any form of cantact with the screen in order to be able to write properly?
Really thinking about getting this Laptop. But I'm a bit worried about the power. I edit recorded lectures for my prof at uni and therefore the recordings are sometimes 3-4 hours long but with only a few cuts in it. How long are rendetimes usually? At the moment I work on a stationary computer with a 1080 and I'd like to see similar performance. Is that realistic?

11:31 bruh, I can't say how many times I've used as feature placing my laptop by my bath and flipping the screen for closer veiwing. It's a godsend 😂

11:55....Use the drawing selection tool with the + selected... And you can hand draw that selection with the pen instead of using the pen tool.
