One of the best tunes EVER written and sang. Hard to believe that this tune is now over 50 years young and still resonates today as it did in the early 70s. You take me to a different time and place. I heard the song in 1974. Lebanon had plunged into a civil war. A friend of mine had waited in line for hours under the loud bombing on the streets of Beirut to get the album. He brought it and I wore the headphones to escape from the deafening sound of the bombs destroying everything. This was a masterpiece - a few years later, an album called FURTHERMORE blew us away. The prog rock and orchestration was second to none. I will never forget it.
Just saw Beijing Olympics, Japan skaters perform to “Woman” by Shawn Phillips, incredible!!! My youngest brother Shawn is named after Shawn Phillips, back in 1975!
Who are the 85 Imbeciles that have defective tympanic membranes ? The man is a visionary and a most unique talent. I have loved his music for over 40 years. Pure magic !
2:21 I saw Shawn 3 times while I was in the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. His music changed my life. Finally there was music worth listening to. It opened my ears to music. Even tunes I had written off, started meaning something. Thank you SP, you are forever loved. Peace from a old Vet. ☮️
I bought the album with this song on it when I was 17 yrs old and played it until it was literally worn out. This song is so beautiful and his voice is truly hypnotic. His music was an anchor for me when I was young and very lost. Thank you Shawn.
Always had a fondness for his music. Saw him a couple of time in the early 1970s. What was so amazing was the way that his voice sounded just like the studio recordings. He carried the toughest lines flawlessly. Really lovely songwriting and singing. He is underrated.
My heart raced when I heard the song! I too am a fan from the 70's. Wow! What a wonderful suprise! I could hardly believe it. Matched the hauntingly beautiful skate beautifully. Thanks Shawn!
Shawn, Shawn,Shawn, i loved you then, and i love ya now. No one's voice can compare to the beauty of yours, thank you over and over again for the gift of your voice and soul.
How come not more people know about this man? I heard him first around 1980 while living in South Africa and wow, I still get chills listening to this song to this day. A master piece.
I first saw Shawn Phillips in Cape Town, South Africa in the mid 70's he was spellbinding then - this is another amazingly powerful version of a truly great song by an excellent singer song writer - well done Shawn and thank you
I too heard Shawn for the first time in Cape Town, 35 years ago. 1989 maybe. A young man who really liked me a lot introduced his music to me.. I fell in love the Shawn instead! Haha 😂 and now I find him here again. Just wonderful. 🤩You didn’t perhaps have a friend named Paddy in Cape Town, did you? 😊
Absolutely one of my favorite songs by someone I consider to be both an artist and a person of the highest intelligence, integrity and insightfulness. Second Contribution, the album from which this song originates, simply changed not just my life, but me. It opened me to a deeper and richer way of seeing, knowing and loving. Health, Love and Clarity, my old friend, and the same to all your new and old fans. - Miles
Shawn was introduced to me when i was 18 by Linda Zack ,the first and only love of my live, my first girl friend. it took place in 1977 in Israel. we used to sit in the sofa and listen to Second Contribution over and over.Linda got back to Montreal and i got back to Sâo Paulo.Never heard from her again.Never let pass one single day without thinking of her and i am always listening to this and to other Shawn's albums so we can be together in Spirit. He's much beyond his time.wish Linda was here
Cette chanson me hante depuis 1972.
OMG, my older sister and I used to listen to Shawn Phillips all the time. We loved him. He rocked our world in the 80's just touching our lives growing up in so many ways. We often what happened to him, because he has such an awesome voice. Now I hear him and he sounds the same, looks great as well. We will go see him. He still has that beautiful long hair, he was and still is a hottie!
1974 .that was the time I heard shawn Philips for the first time.he was way advanced with his talent .he has one of the greatest voices.I still listen to his songs and feel the the tranquility in my heart.thank you Shawn for your beautiful music
Back from Nam in '67. Drafted out of Haight Ashbury. Saw Shawn and have followed him ever since. Have been all over to see him. Now live in Fort Worth, TX where he was born. Peace
Je suis de Montreal I am from Montreal ... and when shawn came to Montreal 'Musique +' in 1991 if I'm not mistaken. He signed me a autograph and I had the privilege of speaking with this gentleman. Shawn .. thank you for your music!
He is unique. My wife, close friends and I listened to him a whole lot during the early to mid-70s. We saw him in concert three times in Detroit and Ann Arbor. One time, after playing a number of his songs by himself, he was joined by a band and they rocked out for a good part of the show. Some of his fans seemed to be shocked by this. We were surprised but thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Memories of early war years here in Lebanon..1975..used to listen to Shawn and other artists in the shelters while bombs were falling all around outside.. Remember I had a turntable I fixed to opereate off a 12v battery source.. One of my first romances too......life is but a dream...live it to the max...while u have time..Cheers.
It's been nearly 40 years since I first saw him live (he played a huge gong, and had that SWEET Ovation guitar then) and he was still awesome on his US tour last year. I still listen to Second Contribution on vinyl. This song, Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah and the entire Joni Mitchell Blue album = the best vocals in pop/folk history
I am a singer/songwriter from Ireland who now lives in Italy and I was playing a show a couple of days ago and there were a few people from the music industry in Italy there...after my performance they said I reminded them of a few different artists and one of them was Shawn Phillips.. I had never heard of him to be honest but now that I have, I am happy to have been compared to him and I have found some new music to listen to... strange how life brings you places and shows you new things...
I have seen Shawn 5 times over the years, in every kind of venue from a small coffee house to an acoustically designed theatre. The best show was in the Commodore Ball Room in Vancouver. This man is magical!
Gerry Peters - when you saw him in Vancouver, would that be about 1972? I was a DJ at a club called Faces then and we played his music.
