  • Not long before Ronnie's passing, Ritchie Blackmore was interviewed discussing his working relationship with him. It's insightful commentary.
There is no doubt that the Blackmore-Dio writing partnership was one of the great relationships in rock music.

And the words about Dio are very nice. But what I take away from this clip is that Ritchies singing actually isn't bad at all. It's not that surprising to me, because when he plays the guitar, sometimes it's like he's singing his solos. And I'm sure you've seen that he's moving his mouth to his solos.
Also, I heard him sing a few notes in other interviews as well, like japan with Doogie White. If he'd really try it, I think he would be a great singer. 🙂
But he rarely sings. Just the same as, he lived in germany for a long time, he knows how to speak german. But you never hear him speak german in interviews. I guess Ritchie is a perfectionist and doesn't want people to hear/see him do things he's not absolutely great at. 🤔

It's so nice to hear Ritchie speaking positively about Ronnie. Ronnie was a gentleman who loved his craft and cared about his fans. He's been gone for 13 years, and I still miss him. Ritchie Blackmore is famous for his bad temperament. Even Dio once said in an interview that he is very thankful to Blackmore because thanks to him his career took flight, but at the same time recognized that Ritchie isn't the best person in the world, he was a prick not only to band mates but also to his fans, and that's something that Dio disliked about him. Great to see some footage where Blackmore talks highly of Dio both as a musician and on a personal level and even calls him a legend which they both are. There has been some hard words between them before and also appreciative words as well, but i cant remember hearing such good words from him about Dio since they played together. Ronnie was so much more than just a singer/lyricist, he was also an instrumentalist and started his musical journey on the trumpet and also played bass while singing for many years and played guitar and i believe piano to some extent, he wrote Holy diver and Dont talk to strangers by himself for example.

Agree! Ian Gillian never really composed any music, but he’s a talented lyricist, I do enjoy his silly but wise “Ted the mechanic” or “Anyone’s daughter”. Sometimes bassist, Roger Glover would write lyrics but you could tell - Glover then wrote some lyrics for Rainbow, he wrote “All night long” - a song as cheesy as it gets…. Then Ozzy, ozzy couldn’t compose two notes together. He even couldn’t write lyrics - in Black Sabbath they were written by Geezer, bassist….. Robert Plant didn’t write music, only some mediocre lyrics. David Coverdale didn’t compose music, only really lackluster repetitive lyrics. Only Dio was not just great lyricist, a poet, but also a talented composer - you can really distinguish his songs, his type of riffs, his melodies and chords progressions.

They're not JS Bach... now if you think Coverdale got music from somebody not credited I won't try to make you change your mind, I just don't know.
and what you say about Plant's lyrics is just a value judgment, yours. I'm not a huge fan of his lyrics (which were very rarely printed on sleeve) but he certainly y wrote a few good ones.

When I was 5,6, and 7 yrs.old I knew who bands were just by listening to the music they would listen to. It was a little trick they would do for their friends. Hey Thomas who is this? Kiss or Deep Purple , Sabbath , Yes , Pink Floyd. I knew them all. Rainbow is a band I got into on my own later as a teen. Because of my love for Ronnie. Your time with him to me was Magical. It's so great hearing stories of you two together. Thank You so much for that. It's good to know you are still making music and influencing younger generations with Good , Real Music.

What's not to love. I also saw him live with Black Sabbath during the 1992 Dehuminzer album/tour and also the later Heaven and Hell shows but I much preferred to see him live with his own band as you got a great combination of tracks from three classic rock bands. As for Richie, well having attended the 1993 show he wrecked at the NEC in Birmingham I swore I'd never pay money to see him again. Dio loved his fans but I'm not sure I'd say the same of Richie. Why some of Rainbow's best songs were never played live just baffles my mind.

You can never tell if Ritchie is taking the piss or bein genuine he goes from saying the diminutive dio was running around” with his little slippers on” to he’s a legend, he cracks me up!!

When Richie speaks highly of a person first, it's rare. Second it goes to show that Ronnie was as fine of a human being there ever was. Last we all know what a GIANT of a singer he was!!! Legend doesn't even cover. Ronnie was is and will always be the Godfather of metal.

Where is this interview from? My the way Ritchie looks, I'd say its mid-90s, but still would like to find the full interview, if anyone knows the name.

The fact Ronnie wrote riffs if he was a former bassist for decades with singing.
    Other than trompet.

Master Blackmore telling old tales about Rainbow’s magical history, to bad Ronnie and him never get together again in new projects.

But perhaps that was the factor in Dio becoming bigger, the fact that he was no longer under Blackmore's shadow and had to do things on his own. Perhaps Blackmore sensed it and gave the little giant with the powerful voice wings to fly high. It's what a good father would do, anyway.

At 70 years now I knew of Ritchies rep in the early, days and the early interviews with Dio FYI were far ....from complimentary as well as many others. Part of it though was people's misunderstanding of his wit and humor. It's sharp and a little dark. About 15 years back though Ritchie got a channel and actually b😢roke🎉 a smile now and then. You folks in my age group know exactly what I mean....don't ya. Well Suprise Suprise, He's actually quite funny, He is a creative mentality and a bit of a wise ars in the interviews his new wife told him to do. Lol and he is still and always a Monster guitar player

I heard an interview from Wendy, his wife. She said Rainbow in the dark was written about Blackmore. She also said the phrase from heaven and hell. The world is full of kings and queens. Who blinds your eyes and steals your dreams it's heaven and hell. He was talking about Ritchie Blackmore. I think Richie and Ronnie both know and especially with Cozy, know. If they kept going, they could have been up there with Purple and Zeppelin.

I never heard Ritchie talk bad about Ronnie, and it was disappointing to me that Ronnie almost always talked shit about Ritchie. I lost respect for him

I feel the same. Dio talked so much shit about Ritchie, Ozzy and Vivian Campbell. Very petty and mean spirited.

The tides of give and take in the lives of Men. When it's time to give be gracious and generous. When it's time to take be discriminating and innocuous. There are few things as aggravating as being forced to give,..in the moments you're in need.

Richie only worked with the best singers - Dio was at the top of the list.
