    I'm here because of The Shining. There's a scene where Jack is telling his family an incident of cannibalism when a group of pioneers get snowed in during "covered wagon times"... Had to look up "covered wagon times" out of interest, and the first half decent video I come across references the incident mentioned in the film, small world.

    Not trying to sound macabre, but what happened if their wagon horses died?

    • @JC-uk3iz
      @JC-uk3iz Рік тому

      Good question! For the most part, travelers used oxen instead of horses to pull the wagons, and typically they would keep extra oxen so that they could rotate them as necessary. Having extra oxen meant they could continue on if one died, and they could use the oxen as food if game was scarce and provisions low.
      Wagon parties were typically fairly large, so it was highly unlikely to lose all oxen, but there are cases of wagons having to be abandoned, along with supplies that didn't fit on the remaining wagons.

    Hallo Klasse 8b

  • @kimiskizi420
    @kimiskizi420 10 років тому

    she should of said the reason the Donner Party got to the seirra nevada late and worn out was because hastings gave them untested directions and said it was a safe shortcut, it took them weeks longer to navigate the route and they took a major loss going thru the desert.which wore them out and made them late. and something like the night they made it to the pass they got 5 feet of snow. was hastings fault for the whole tragedy

    • @tilesetter1953
      @tilesetter1953 6 років тому

      kimiskizi420. What you say is correct but they share some responsibility: they did not have to take the shortcut. Personal experience has tought me to trust no one, not even good friends sometimes. They did not even know Hastings....

    • @ohwhatelse
      @ohwhatelse 5 років тому

      kimiskizi420 ...The unbelievable lack of good judgement was a severe tragedy. However, all the blame wrongfully lands on leaders- though ppl ought to be individuals and think independently. i, myself, do not blindly follow others. That is, thankfully, because a 5th grade teacher taught me to BE AN INDIVIDUAL, independent thinker. We should always gather our own info, facts, & carefully weigh the odds ourselves! I have stayed out of trouble that way, more than once! No one can be blamed for our OWN lack of good judgement! THEY SHOULD 'NOT HAVE JUST 'FOLLOWED' ANYONE, NOT KNOWING THE FULL FACTS! 'NOT AT THAT TIME OF YR.!

    • @shirleybalinski4535

      Most were those who everything to gain & nothing to lose. You generally don't leave a nice home, a good job, extended family, social roots, peaceful surroundings, schools, churches to venture into the unknown. Ask yourself..would you ( with no guarantees)? Most were lower middle class, landless/ penniless folks. Later after the RR & the west was basically settled, then the true middle class came.

    It is sad to see most of the comments here are coming from kids who just came here for their home work and their ancestors fighting against everything like beasts for a new life
    It feels like most of them just don't give a fck about their past, even tho my people and most of the people around the world hate US for being invasive, imperialist, etc.
    I feel it is one of the greatest empires that humanity ever reached involving every social, technological, and many other aspect you could imagine I really belive we could reach level 1 civilization if we had this kind of people of the past, with hunger to know always more and achive everything they wanted 👍

    ...as for the Donner party, I don't understand why they didn't winter in a safer, lower area instead of trying the pass at that time, so late in the yr., even if they had to backtrack! It's a miracle that anyone survived! And, as the strongest will being to survive, I can't blame them for eating whatever there was available for sustenance, even though it is repulsive when you, yourself, are not starved near to death.... Sad.
    The unbelievable lack of good judgement was a severe tragedy. However, all the blame wrongfully lands on leaders- though ppl ought to be individuals and think independently.
