It's a musical like most Bollywood films - it has a story interspersed with songs. While Pakistan & India are rivals, the two nations emerged from one - a kind of divorce. Both countries share a great deal of culture and language. The two main characters are from different communities and have misconceptions about the other's country. The two characters fall in love but the "political" forces at play prevent them from getting married. He sacrifices himself and his happiness for her sake. The lawyer shows the court that there has been a miscarriage of justice and tries to re-unite the couple. I suggest you watch the whole film. Subtitled (in English) versions are readily available.
