Farland Story (6) Kamigami no Isan (PC-98 Paradise) - A Farland Story game set in modern times?!

- In this episode of PC-98 Paradise I talk about the sixth game in TGL's "Farland" series: "Farland Story: Kamigami no Isan".
-- ABOUT THE UPDATE PATCH (to fix the game's bugs) --
I have not fully tested the update along with the English patch, however I recommend installing the English patch first if you plan to use it. I have confirmed the game will still start after installing both and that the game is still in English, but haven't tested beyond that. It looks like the file sizes for GAME1.exe and GAME2.exe are unchanged (which means the patch likely didn't work) and the bug in the sound test which the patch is supposed to fix is not fixed when you use the English patch, so unfortunately it is possible the update patch will not fix anything when used in conjunction with the English patch.
Instructions to install the update patch
1. Open the following URL and download "fs6_up.exe" at the bottom of the page.
www.entergram.co.jp/support/u...
2. Run the downloaded exe on a modern Windows PC. You will probably get a security warning. Ignore it and run the file. You will be prompted for a location to extract the update files.
3. Put the extracted files on a PC-98 floppy disk (or CD). If you're planning to use a PC-98 emulator, use the program "Disk Explorer" to put the files on a virtual floppy image. (They cannot be run from a hard drive.)
4. Insert the floppy with the update files into the PC-98. Open a PC-98 dos prompt. (If the game is already started, you can quit the game to get a dos prompt.) Navigate to the location where you put the update files and type "setup".
5. You may get a warning that the disk doesn't have an MS-DOS system on it. You can ignore it by selecting "yes" (はい).
6. In the update program, the first line is where you select the drive letter where the update files are located, second line is the hard drive where the game is installed, and the third line is the game install directory. Confirm all is correct and press enter. If the yellow progress bar reaches the end successfully you should be good to go!

Your absurd dry humor always makes me laugh out loud: the Indiana Jones edit, the way you made me sit on the edge of my seat to see if you'd overfill your glass of brandy, the dramatic reading of the Japanese text about helping someone find the bathroom (which, also, good job localizing that to sound right without being strictly literal), it was a great video. I'm always glad to see one of yours pop up in my subscription feed.
I love that you are actually fluent in Japanese, so unique on youtube to have someone reviewing Japanese games who knows the language.
It was the main reason for me to learn japanese. I remember when the teacher in japanese class would go thru all the pupils asking what was our motivation, everybody was gobsmacked when i told them that lol. That was a change from tea ceremony and bonzai trimming
@@CousinHubertRetrogaming Oh shib are you related to them? lol, Basement Bros' cousin Hubert.
no im just a nobody hehe@@KingofCrusher
If you aren't already familiar with the channel, you might want to check out "Import Gaming FTW," also by a UA-camr who speaks both Japanese and English fluently.
@@noneofyourbusiness4616 i am! But that's not really my cup of tea compared to basement bros
The best Brandy is the one that lives in a port on a western bay, serving a hundred ships a day. She works layin' whiskey down, and sailors always ask her for another round. She's a fine girl, and a good wife she would be.
I LOVE the artwork in these games. The portraits, the overworld and the little battle sprites.
Squirrel with a Sword is pretty good; I'll call it a close second behind Duck with Sunglasses.
This channel is such a goldmine.
You are legit one of my favorite content creators. Seeing these games from your perspective and giving us non-Japanese speakers/readers an insight into these long forgotten games is such a rare concept. Thanks for making this content.
Even as a non-non-Japanese speaker, this channel is still one of my go-to sources.
the alcoholic interlude, just like clockwork! I wish I could get this series working on retroarch, it seems fun! like all the wild side characters in this one.
Basement brothers, Gtv Japan and Gamesack are my favorites.
It’s been such a great ride watching you go through all of these. The Farland series really captures a special kind of anime nostalgia in their overall presentation that really makes me smile. There’s just something about the color usage and the weird one-off animal characters that’s super charming.
Here’s hoping you get some good brandy recommendations 😊
Not to mention the absurdly cute battle animations lol
I had a heck of a time sourcing the original Farland Saga for win 97, now that I have those old games I'm never letting them go
Nothing can top a talking duck wearing a tie and sunglasses. Sorry Squirrel you are only a hero in your own head, the duck wins.
I've become a Farland series fan just by watching your videos.
Great episode. Also, nice to see someone else correctly using brandy in eggnog. Most heathens use rum or whiskey.
No, please don't drink brandy on the rocks like that !!
It should be roughly body temperature (a brandy snifter is meant to help warm the brandy...) The best type of brandy is... cognac. But you'll have to try them all to figure out your favourite. ;)
Aha, so its brandy this time. Glad to see the series is staying consistent with its alcohol references
You always make my Sundays a better day! I'm ready to this new adventure.
Thank you for shining a light on this video game that I'll probably never experience myself as I can't read Japanese, nor do I know how to handle old pc game emulations. I'm agree with the other commenters that your sense of humor is fantastic lol.
I lost it at the Spaceballs reference
I would totally watch a mr. Jakes video about how to make egg nog.
I wanted to see that birdman get the sword out of the stone. What a shame.
I love these reviews. They're comfy watching!
Amazing editting at @4:20 lol, great video as always, love your work you put into these videos.
its been pretty great watching this series, keep up the great work
Ah, you make me want to drink brandy too! It's been a long time since I've drank one. Drinking while gaming is great! 😁
It's criminal that your channel doesn't have more subs.
I see a new Farland Story video I click, watch, and comment. Glad you’re going through the full series!
Appreciating the documentation of games I'm unlikely to play but this series has kind of run together in my mind haha.
You get a like just for the Spaceballs clip. Thank you.
Ooh a brand new PC-98 Paradise!
Your videos of Japanese exclusives are both fascinating and an opportunity for me to see how much kanji I can read.
Great job on doing FS series(i liked FS series)hopefully one day it can make a return again
It's interesting how Farland Story 1-3 is something of a trilogy of games that all build off each other while 4-6 are largely independent and self contained. Still they seem to have not run out of new gimmicks and ideas on how to keep things fresh from game to game. Even if it means stretching the games basis in medieval fantasy further and further each time.
I'm glad you've kept up with the series, watching it's evolution has been a treasure.
A++ for the brandy song, i laughed so hard - brilliant! I prefer single malt but you get a pass 😜
I'm loving the series. Thanks for making these.
Been loving this series overview, great stuff!
😊 just what I needed today! Really enjoy this series of videos
Aww yeah, the perfect vid to watch in bed before going to sleep
Dunno about the best, but my favorite brandy is Laird's apple brandy. Good stuff!
Ooh. That makes two recommendations for Laird's Apple. Looks like I'd better try it!
I legit thought the brandy bit was going to lead into a sponsor
Love these videos and this channel!
The in-game art in this entry looks nicer than the previous ones, at least to me. It might be that the colors have better contrast.
Oh man I cannot wait until the next video. I love these types of games so seeing them get some recognition is cool as heck. But then I probably am just a fan of every IP that came out back in the 80's and 90's.
Such a great channel
As always it was fun to watch video. And this series is still really charming by it looks and humour.
6:54 And here I thought that a Masamune-wielding Frog was the weirdest RPG character.
The Saga of Farland gets deeper! 😁
Love it
I would love a modern port of these games to come state side, some kind of collection would be awesome. But as it this channel brings all the PC 88/98 goodness that gives me all the nostalgia for something I never experienced. Very much makes my weekend a much better time.
I was looking forward to your eggnog making tips. Now I'm sad.
Great video otherwise though, thanks as always.
I just take milk, an egg, sugar/honey, brandy/spiced rum, and nutmeg and mix them together. It works best with a blender, but I don't have one now and make do with a whisk. As for the ingredient ratios, I just use what feels like about the right amount for one glass. There are recipes online that can give you exact amounts. I usually also top it off with some cinnamon and you can also add some vanilla if you want.
I'm more of a Scotch guy, but when I'm in the mood for brandy, I typically reach for Torres 10. It's a Spanish solera brandy, and--at least here in the U.S.--it's very affordable.
Fantastic video as usual...i bought an x68k z product edition...i know...itsnt the same as owning an actual japanese home computer but i m ok with it emulating quite well the real thing thanks to the human-68k emulator embedded into it
Maybe they were reluctant to credit Toto for the music, since that's also the name of a Japanese toilet company.
I'd comment on your audience question but I don't want Google to start throwing certain beverage ads my way.
Oh wow. I just watched Dune a couple of weekends ago. Shameless plagiarism! I liked your brandy song. I love your videos!
Ah, now I have to watch all the other farland stories in order! I am considering starting a game in the series, it would be my first PC-98 game. The dialogue doesn't look too difficult, hopefully I'll manage with my japanese
With your measures of spirits I'm not surprised you forgot where you were for a moment. If we are ever at a party together then you're pouring.
So glad you made it to this game! It's one of my favorites. It's a hard pick between it and FS5 for me, especially with how much I love the characters and music in both. The CD and SC-55 soundtracks also SLAP in this game.
Glad to hear a (somewhat) contrary opinion to mine! Yeah, it's definitely not bad though I'd definitely choose FS5. But then again... I'm biased.
@@BasementBrothers I think the translation to FS6 call him "Hugh", which makes a lot more sense than "Hug". It's possible they meant "Hugh", and just misspelled it in Japanese(?) (just looking at their song translations to English, it's not too far-fetched. Also, I got the bad ending because of Meisha being best girl, and it was a very emotional and silly ending for me.
Heheh. Interesting theory. "Hug" is a weird name. Sticking with the katakana, the only other possible interpretation would be "Hag", which would be even worse.
I usually defer to the English spellings from the patches in these videos, but some that just don't work with the katakana like "Hugh", I've just gotta change.
@@BasementBrothers If they've named a song "Eat Bag" in the English title (I'm assuming the Japanese title is WAY different), it's quite a possibility.
The song titles in Farland 4 are all in English to begin with, so the title is "Eat Bag" in the Japanese version too. No idea what they meant by "Eat Bag" though.
The best part is the sound comparison part
You can clickbait me anytime. You're do much of a good boy for me to mad at you.
When Farland Story video series end, what about some Power DoLLS? There was only 1 title released overseas. The second game and his 'Advanced' expansion(?) have some of the greatest music I ever heard in video games.
10:33 a Succubus named Viper...They weren't being too subtle, huh?
They could have made her really bad. "Is Viper any good?" "No, she sucks."
I've been hooked after re finding this chanel. Any plans for more 68k videos?
Man I wish they could remaster and translate these games like someone did with Langrisser 1 and 2
I remember my surprise when finding out you could heal enemies in Breath of Fire 3. It heals the undead back to being just dead.
Copper & Kings Apple Brandy, Bertoux Brandy. Hennessy is bad unless you're getting XO, and even then it's overpriced (and technically Cognac).
Another thing that supports the Lupin connection beyond the Thief and Rival Inspector aspect, is Zero being a excellent marksman with a hat, kinda like Jigen. If there's a line in the game about him aiming along the brim of the hat, that confirms it.
Though I think you're right to say Zero is likely meant to be more like Indiana Jones (then again, a lot of Lupin movies wind up playing out like Indiana Jones movies anyway).
(its pronounced "Loo-pahn" BTW since its a French name and French makes no sense)
Yeah, I've always heard most people pronounce it "Loo-pin" in English, so that's what I went with.
@@BasementBrothers It's a common mistake, don't worry.
So here's a thing for a possible future episode: the Master of Monsters series. I'm curious how different they are from the one that got released stateside on Sega Genesis.
@@BasementBrothers Loo-pahn (an old Japanese interpretation of the French pronunciation) has become the standard pronunciation for the English dubbed versions for many years now, but I find it's often pronounced Loo-pin by people who only know about the series peripherally. After all, that's how it LOOKS like it should be pronounced, right?
Another nod to Lupin: among Zero's weapons is a P38. The German pistol Walther P38 has been Lupin's signature weapon since the 1971 TV series. They even mention it in the ending theme!
Fun video. Seconded on the comment by @KingofCrusher: it's refreshing to have someone who can read what they're playing. I only know a little, so all the story would be completely lost on me if I played this.
@LupintheThird Thanks. I have never seen Lupin dubbed, so unfortunately I had only heard the "casual mention" English pronunciation before, which I guess is incorrect. Otherwise I only knew the correct pronunciation in Japanese, ルパン三世.
@@BasementBrothers So, ironically, within days of this conversation.... TMS' official youtube channel decided to upload one of the Lupin movies to their channel.
And its one of the ones where the name Lupin is actually pronounced "Lu-pin" instead of "Lu-pahn."
Its like the hand of the divine saw this youtube thread and decided to troll us.
Is the artist for this game the same who worked on the Lunar Silver Star series?
No she is not.
I have about 110 boxed pc98 games but no farland story! What a pity
BTW what pc98 model are you playing this one with in the video ?
Gotta change that. The Farland Story games are not very hard to find. :)
I'm using the same 9821AS I've used in all my videos. Why?
@@BasementBrothers thank you for your reply. So i see it is based on a 486dx33 processor apparently. I was asking because seeing the battle animations they look like their are in super fast forward mode. Or is it something to be set in the options, like the speed of the dialogs?
Yeah, I talked about it in my First Farland Story video. The battle animations can be set to "normal", "fast", or "off". In my opinion "normal" makes the game take too long, and "off" is just boring since you miss out on all the funny battle animations - which are maybe the main draw of the game. "Fast" is the perfect compromise and that's how I always prefer to play these games.
It seems like the semi futuristic setting may have been influenced by Final Fantasy 6. Btw, if these NEC PCs run DOS then why aren't these games compatible with DOS systems or emulators?
PC-98's use PC-98 DOS. The systems are fundamentally different at the architectural level.
Wait. What's the best way to make egg nog?
I just take milk, an egg, sugar/honey, brandy/spiced rum, and nutmeg and mix them together. It works best with a blender, but I don't have one now and make do with a whisk. As for the ingredient ratios, I just use what feels like about the right amount for one glass. There are recipes online that can give you exact amounts. I usually also top it off with some cinnamon and you can also add some vanilla if you want.
11:45 Maybe she's a trainer.
Good theory. That would seem less cruel, but the game indeed makes it pretty clear that she's supposed to be a main attraction and part of the show.
But I still don't know how to make egg nog

Man did I try to emulate the PC-98 but alas! These games will be forever forbidden to play for me 😞
i'm surprised there's eggnog available in japan
There isn't. I have to make it myself... which tastes better anyway.
I dunno, feels like you sound a bit jaded in this one even if you are being more jokey and funny.
Generally given how obscure these games can be, I really did appreciate your more open minded candor about them, just presenting them as is.
Obscure outside of Japan I mean.
Thanks for that opinion. It's important for me to know there are viewers who feel that way.
But I don't know when I have ever really just shown games as-is. I've always given my honest opinions about the games I cover. There are plenty of other games that I have given mixed reviews for before, like Xak II and Melroon. And there are even games I called complete garbage like Valis 1 for PC-88 and Super Mario Bro. Special. I definitely don't want to stop giving my opinions in the videos.
@@BasementBrothers You are reall good at presenting the games in context to ownership and hardware. But also it feels like you give decently comprehensive reviews in general. This video feels like an odd exception. You gloss over a lot about the game, even if its just a boring Farland Game in the series it seems weird that the video has a more cynical detached tone, even the bit about the brandy and eggnog kinda falls flat because i am genuinely interested in the thing you are talking about because of its sheer novelty anyway.
Anything you talk about on the PC 98 will be interesting to me as a viewer because its all a mystery to me, even the boring less noteworthy things.
